Just a note for anyone looking in London to rent, once its on Right Move or Zoopla (if its a good apartment) just presume its already gone. You better off, actually having a list of agents saved in the areas you like, and actively messaging them directly as they can show you apartments that they have yet to put on Right move or Zoopla! That is how i have found my current rental! Hope that helps

Tip for anyone moving to London on a budget: London is so well connected that you don't necessarily need to live in the area you work. Living a few extra tube stops or zones away will only add minutes onto your commute but save you money. I live in zone 9 (Essex) and it takes 15 mins by train to East London and 30 mins to central. If I can go from peaceful green fields to the bustling city centre in less than 45 mins, imagine having a tube station near you.

You are definitely not alone, the market is incredibly fast-paced, if you are able to speak with a trusted agent or make a relationship with agents to get them to inform you as soon as a relevant property comes to them, this may help you beat the rush. Good luck!

I totally understand how frustrating it is to find a flat/room, god it's so stressful. I really admire you for not giving up. I myself had to find a room to rent and it's true that being a foreigner it is even harder, but not impossible at the end of the day!
@macerly
@macerly 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! ❤️ I totally agree - nothing is ever impossible! I think you just have to remember to keep going, and that you WILL find something eventually - but as a foreigner, often you are the first person in your family/and or friend circle doing this, which makes stuff harder. I didn't mention this in the video, but we nearly couldn't even manage to rent IN THE FIRST PLACE because we were both foreigners who had not started work yet, but was set to graduate this summer. Basically because weren't British, we needed to pay everything up front - or could not rent at all. Luckily it worked out and we both got work and ways to deal with it - but yeah, it makes things a lot harder for sure!

Just to reassure, these are NOT representative neighbourhoods in London wrt price. They were kinda zones 1 to 1.3 if you know what I mean- all pretty high end areas. Another 2 miles further out (towards the west would be Fulham, Olympia, Queens Park, Clapham) might only mean an extra 3 stops on the tube to work and might be 70% of the cost. Still great areas mind.

Yeah but you waste a lot of time and money commuting... For example if you waste 1h one way that is 2h a day, 5 days a week that is 10h a week, which is 40h a month, which is 480h a year... That is a lot of time wasted commuting :(

The fact that you have to put in offers on rent is nuts to me. In Germany, this would never ever be a thing. The landlord decides on the rent and everyone knows they have to pay this exact rent. Not perfect, because the rent may still be high, but better than bidding wars on rentals. Crazy.
@suzannelawson9215
@suzannelawson9215 Жыл бұрын
Yes, where I live in USA, the rent is set by the owner/landlord and no such thing exists to put a bid into rent an apartment here. The price(the rent), is set by the owner or property mgmt. company, so if you look in the newspaper or online for apartments you know what the monthly rental will be exactly, be it a small studio apt or a 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom apartment. I actually I have never heard of bidding to rent an apartment in USA before. Maybe more commen in some cities in Europe?

I feel you and I don't even live in a big city like London. Me and my girlfriend hunted for an Apartment in Bonn, Germany, for like four month. Since I am still in Uni we did not have a lot of budget and the companies never accepted my child support, BAföG (financial support from the government for students) and parental mantainance as income. So we only had my girlfriends income, who recently started working full time and didn't earn that much. And most wanted to see an income of 3-4 times the rent, which is insane. Many would not even accept parental insurence (that they are going to pay if we fall short). We ended up in a nice flat at the end, with only a few downsides. It is more far out of the center than we wanted (30 min. with bus) and is on the third floor without a lift. But it has a big balcony thst we love and we got a parking lot in a underground garage with it😊

From watching this, it seems you were having bad luck with the bedroom sizes. I don't know why London has this issue, it's like they measure each bedroom by the size of a bed, and not by the over-all dimensions of it being a room that needs extra furniture.

The London property market ever since lockdown lifted has been insane. There's not enough places to live and even if potential renters can afford the asking rent, it's not guaranteed they'll get the property because there's competition from other people as well - let's not forget the landlord also has the final say in who he/she wants to live there. With offices in London all re-opening and people returning to the city, i.e. students/professionals who may have lived elsewhere during the pandemic, the need for a place to live has just exploded and will only get worse due to demand.

I suggest that you buy your next apartment. I'm 48 years old and I've been renting different places over the years. It's a trap once you are renting you will always keep renting. Over the years I've spent so much money on rent, I could have paid off an entire mortgage but I haven't, I've just been renting. Even if you don't know what direction your life is going in and you might move out in a couple of years. If you own a place, then you can rent it out to someone else, if your life moves in a different direction. I am so desperate to buy my next place, don't wait as long as I have, just buy a place now.
