I actually love the fact of paying rent for the entire year because your rent there is so much more cheaper than ours. 1 million naira is like 2600 plus dollars and that's for the entire years rent. Heck, I pay that in 2 months here and have 10 months left to pay much more. I know when my significant other told me how much he pays I was like wow! However, finding a place to live there is hectic and some of the flats are not good at all and in poor shape. Saw a few rentals an agent showed us and they both were a hot mess. I quickly asked my significant other to look at other flats. He said, the rental market there is tricky and it pays to know someone due to many being deceitful and so on. Great n informative video!

that's not how it works. its not converting $ to naira, except you are paying rent and you income is based in the US(dollars). most people don't even make 500,000 naira in nigeria in a year. thing are prices based on been in Nigeria. the real equivalence of prices is same as the US. not sure if i explained this well. its cost of living in Nigeria.

I see so many videos about people moving back to Lagos, and they're almost 100% made by females. Either, brothers aren't moving home the same way sisters are, or we're just not into making vlogs, or a combo of the two. Anyway, thanks for the info

you're beautiful...i always thought the landlord was responsible for the agency fee in Nigeria.
@Afrocurlitan
@Afrocurlitan 7 жыл бұрын
Aww, thank you!! No, the renter usually pays the agency fee here. The common practice has become for them to charge 10% of the total rent sum. In practice, the amount of rent usually determines what an agent will charge. Usually, when the rent is in the millions, an agent can charge as low as 5%, depending on the negotiating power of the tenant. When the rent is less, usually in the hundreds of thousands, most agents insist on charging a 10% agency fee.

so, if you want to move in less than 1 or 2 years, like say your job changes from Ikeja to Aja...or even Lagos to Abuja, or you rent an apartment during the dry season only to find out that your street floods every time it rains, are you just SOL? Do you really only have the option of moving once a year (or paying for two apartments at the same time)
@Afrocurlitan
@Afrocurlitan 6 жыл бұрын
You can move out early but your rent is already paid for so you can't get that money back. That is the part that sucks about paying your rent in advance. I have quite a few friends who have gotten an apartment with www.fibre.com/. Fibre allows you to pay rent on a monthly basis, so it is really great for people who don't want to commit to paying rent once a year. They also have brand new apartments that are fully furnished and fully serviced. You can either get an apartment with roommates or rent one alone.

here's another question on the practicalities of moving. Is is feasible to ship stuff from the U.S. to Lagos? It's not like moving from Brooklyn to New Jersey where I could just rent a U-haul or hire a moving van, and I definitely won't be able to fit everything I want to bring into 2 suitcases before I hop on a flight.

OK sisi 'Ajebota'.... For goddamn sake, stop comparing a well established society where >90% of things work to a failed society like ours. The problem with our generation is....we tend to westernize everything instead of trying to localize and indigenize (resolving the indigenous people's problems by meeting their basic needs). See China, India, Brazil et al... I understand you're prolly from the top-middle class echelon or above. The costs, prices and overall platform/context on which your conversation is based is focused on a certain top-class of Lagosians. Those said prices and factors might be 'realistic' among ur 'folks'... (15%-20% - top-middle class) but, aren't 'realistic' from an everyday Nigerian perspective that constitute about 75%. Great conversation but, unrealistic factors and comparisons. Explore the heart of the Lagos-m'land, experience the real and genuine Lagosians and..... get REAL!
