2004 Toyota Tacoma Throttle Body Idle Problem IAC

I just got done swapping a 96 Tacoma from a 2RZ to a 3RZ, I got all done and the idle was odd, this video helped me fix the issue, it was a throttle body/IAC issue. Now I have a great running 96 xcab 3RZ 2wd 5spd taco, thanks guys!

I sprayed about a can of carb cleaner into the throttle body without removing it - sprayed the MAF clean and my truck is at least running now. I did screw around with the front throttle adjustment screw (no idea what I'm doing) - but, I set it so it just rests nest to the plunger. At least my truck runs now - I am pleased. I have bookmarked this video in case I have to take the deep dive and removed the whole thing - you listed links for the parts I would need. BIG HELP! Thank you for this video. I'm a 67 yr old nerd and this was my very 1st DIY truck repair! I felt like I knew what I was doing. I am wondering why the three vacuum hoses on top are missing on my truck and just have blocked-off "caps"?

I just changed the IAC and the rpm is always at 1500 to 1700, before changing it they were at 700, with this video I already know how to lower the rpm, thanks

Just a hot tip, upper cable on cam is a Cruise control sencer cable.If Cruise control didn't work take up the slack in cable Wala it will work.

After literally years of getting a surging of the idle on my Taco, I think this is the video that I've been waiting for. This just lit up my brain as I saw you tinker with all of this and I think this is the source of my Taco's wild fluctuations of idle at a stop sign. Sometimes the vehicles surges so much that I worry that I'm going to hit the person in front of me. This helps SO MUCH! Thanks buddy!

Yes, Keith is right, if you clean the IAC and the TB, you shold not have to touch the factory settings. You said earlyer that someone had adjusted them, but if the paint was still there it was not adjusted.

Hi 👋, really good video 📹. Nice close up camera work and great walk through on this procedure. I have a 98 Toyota 4Runner with the 2.7 L (just had a top end rebuild) and it's having a different twist in idle. Mine starts cold correctly at 1200 rpms but when it warms up the idle drops to 650 to 700 ish and runs rough like it wants another 150 rpms to smooth out. If I manually raise the idle at the TB up a bit (approximately 150 rpms) the engine smoothes out fine. Both idle screws you pointed out in this video are still at their factory settings (as evidenced by the yellow paint from the factory). Should I just adjust the idle up a bit or is this evidence of some components not working properly?

My tacoma 2.7l auto at a stop sign after warming up at a redlight will have a rough idle and yes ive done all the cleaning and changed the spark plugs.

On efi obd 2 systems there is no idle adjustment those screws are not to be turned they don't adjust the idle. The idle is controlled by the ecm and iac .If the battery is disconnected for to long the ecm will have to relearn the idle fuel trims before it will idle correctly.there is a percedure of turning the key on and off a few times to put it in relearn mode.Most likely the holes in the throttle body before the throttle plate were clogged the iac gets its air to idle the motor from those holes and the throttle plate remains closed at idle

My tacoma 96 2.4 2Rz was running fine, then start High rpm (1200) in Park. I cleaned throttle body and IAC valve, now engine starts at low rpm when cold andcthen when warms up RPm go to 1200. Do I need to make the adjustment you did on this video??

I have a 01 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed, and my alternator seized up and shredded my belt, 8 months later I replaced the alternator and belts, and she turned over good. Changed the oil and filter. Drove the truck for about 10 miles and now my idle is messing up. Whenever I come to a stop, my RPMs drop out and I stall. I have to keep my foot on the throttle in neutral to keep my RPMs up so I don't stall. Should I look into a possible IAC problem?

It happened to me and it was the broken diaphragm, It's weird how while he was connecting everything again it's clearly shown how the diaphragm was not working. Unfortunately, that one is not sold by separate. My jeep had a 3RZ-FE so I took one from a tacoma on a junkyard and after I changed it, problem solved.

This video was extremely helpful. It gave me the courage to remove and clean the throttle body and IAC valve. Unfortunately my truck isn't idling correctly. The idle is high. I guess I will replace the IAC. What brand do you recommend? The pricing ranges from $20 to $400. I found a Standard brand (ac526) on rockauto and ebay for a midrange price. Please comment

I bought an IAC for around $70 a while ago from Walmart online. I noticed, however, that with a lot of WD40 and a very narrow flat-head screwdriver, I was able to unstick the valve in the old one, which should be closed. Mine was stuck open which caused a high idle. It looked serviceable after I cleaned as much of the carbon out of it as I could. The valve moved freely as it is spring-loaded. I put the new one on all the same and will hold on to the old one as a spare.

@@sissonsk thanks for info. I haven't driven the truck since I cleaned the throttle body and IAC. On few occasions I let the truck run for 10 minutes. The idle when the engine is cold is low but increases as the truck warms to operating temp. Idle speed is reverse of what it should be.

at about 18:30 we cannot see what he is adjusting and you need to understand just what he is doing when you cannot see it

Not sure exactly what you are referencing. The first thing he does is rotate the throttle to rev the engine, next he removes and attaches the vacuum tube to cause the plunger to move back and forth, and finally, he adjusts the nut and bolt to change the resting position of the plunger.

My 2.4 tacoma has a high idle and when I took off the vacuum hose its rpm shot up 2-3 grand. Any tip of diagnosing and also it has 311,000 but it idles what it sounds like 800-1000

That rear bolt for the low-idle adjust is a real pain to get to when the throttle body is on the car. With a metric allen wrench and metric open-end and box wrenches, about the best I can manage is 1/8 - 1/4 of a turn at a time, so it takes a while to turn that thing in or out 3-4 turns if you are adjusting it from scratch. If it's just a little out, it's not too bad.

It's not just the gap. What matters is that the plunger comes out enough to raise the RPM by 500 rpm when the vacuum hose is removed. The whole video makes me wonder if the IAC was really bad, or if the low and high idle screws were just way out of adjustment.

Rob Robinson take the throttle body off and clean it thoroughly. Then take the IAC, very similar to this video(if you have 3.4) and clean it out with throttle body spray, toothbrush it, swab it, and airhose it dry, ports also. Should be good to go. But this is 2 months later...

Don’t clean the edge of throttle plate, or the throttle body, with spray cleaner while the throttle body is installed. The IAC motor is located below the throttle plate. Gunk removed by by the spray cleaner will flow into the IAC motor and ruin it.
