I can not access the function menu. When I press the front button it just switches between camera and video. Does the function menu only show when a sd card is inserted

If you are talking about connecting a USB style to charge it yes. If you are talking without a battery in it No.

So you highly rate this camera even though it cannot perform one of it's main functions? Not biased at all. Dreadful support from this company. The manual on the website is out of date. The camera (mine) does not cycle through the options, cannot select settings on camera, only via phone. The bottom button turns sound on and off, does not selects wifi as online manual says. Top button selects wifi. Support go round in circles before telling me to read the manual then finally admitting that the one on the website is out of date but they cant send me an up to date one. Fortunately bought via Amazon, so it's going back.
