@@GR1MKA1 meanwhile I switched my setup to an Osmo Action 3 and also did extensive testing to find the right microphone for my motovlog setup. I also have a video about it on my channel, but it's in German. I found two solutions that worked very well with the Osmo Action 3: 1. Samsung EO-IC100 Headset - this is actually a full headset with in ear speakers, but I simply cut them off and only kept the microphone in the little control unit. This is a very light wight solution. Directly with a USB-C plug into the camera, and the audio results are quite fine without any clipping for me. Especially considering the low price of it. 2. WKWZY DX-M02 USB-C adapter that you can youse with 3.5mm TRS microphones. It's more expensive, but I can use the lavalier microphones I already head. As the adapter supports stereo, I can even use it with my dual vlog setup. And I also have no problems with clipping and can use the gain control in the Osmo Action 3.

YES! The only person on YT that actually praises the product because it simply works! Like, seriously, so many people are focusing on super high resolutions, 10 bit bazingas and other things when the fundaments, that are reliability, are lying down flat. Kudos to You Dork man for being real with it. If all of the buyers would be like that, the companies would actually focus on delivering a fully capable and working product! I personally bought DJI action 3 and I love it. Very reliable but never had to test the external mics, so it's not an issue for me for now. Maybe the gain thing is something they can add in the future updates? Anyhow the camera doesn't freeze or corrupt like gopros infamously did in the past - 11 does not but it costs a little bit horrendous amount of money for what u are getting.

I use a Sony FDR-X3000 on my helmet, side mounted, with a 128GB SD card, external Panda mic and a 10,000mAH external battery pack attached. Turn it on to record at the start of a ride, turn it off at the end of the day. 11hr record time at 1080p 60fps and 7.5 hour battery life on the external batt plus 2 hours on camera battery. In 10 years of using Sony cameras, HDR AS15 then the FDR-X3000, I have never lost a single file or had a camera crash. They just work. The external mike does suffer from gain issues but as I just use it to record the bike sound it is not a biggy for me. Also water proof as is and even handles rain with the rear door open for the mike and external power. Cannot understand why people keep buying Gopro when there are far better cameras for motorcycles on the market.

I have the Action 3. With either the DJI Wireless Mic or a USB-C External Mic attached, the db level on the camera itself is adjustable to minus 12db. You only have access to this gain adjustment when the external mic is plugged in so you might easily have missed it or it might have been a recent firmware upgrade. With the wonderful gain control on the DJI Wireless Mic, I leave the gain on the camera at 0db and do all the needed gain adjustment for moto vlogging on the Wireless Mic.

Yup, was going to post the same. They added -12db gain adjustment in a relatively recent firmware update -- the same upgrade that introduced 10-bit colour depth. IMO this camera is nearly perfect.

@@oscr_zen, there is also a 3.5mm jack for a wired lave mic on the transmitters. I don't have a lot of room for even the small transmitter without removing foam. There are a few good comparison reviews on KZbin. I am opting for the Shure MVL but at $100CDN that is a pricey option, also on back order for many vendors. There are other cheaper options but make sure you test them before purchase or have a good return policy.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this already, but the Action 3 has mic volume adjustment from -12 to +24. A firmware update came out in Nov or Dec 2022 that added this. Also, the external mic adapter is just a simple USB-c to TRS mini jack. Any of them will work, just don't try to use a TRRS jack. I really wanted to go with the Action 3 but ended up returning 5 of them. They all had the soft focus issue; some worse than others. I ended up going with the GoPro 11 for $10 more. $340 (veteran disc) vs $330. I also bought the Media Mod for $55. So now I can take out the GoPro battery and run the camera on a small power bank and use an external mic at the same time. It's the only action cam that'll do this as far as I know. Most of them will do either one, but not both at the same time. I sure can't complain about the picture quality and it's running flawlessly so far as long as I don't leave the mounting fingers folded in. It was a good choice for my needs. I looked at the Insta 360 as well. I guess I just had small worries about framing the shots, image stabilization and picture quality. Maybe if this review was out I woulda gone this way.

Glad to hear you recommend the Insta360. I just bought the One RS w/4K lens and the mic adapter for my helmet cam last week. I originally got the Insta360 X3 because I have a GoPro Hero 6 I was going to use for the helmet. But when I finally dug it out of storage (always hated it because the thing would lock up and not record.) the batteries barely held a charge. Instead of buying new batteries and an audio interface, I went One RS. I'm keeping both Insta360s. One on the helmet to vlog with (just starting that) and the other for interesting angles without having to constantly remount and change angles. Worst case is I have a back up if something happens to one of them.

Looks like the Action 3's latest update includes a negative dB gain for external mics, precisely what we'd need: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jonUm3tnm8eKd68 This is probably the camera I'm going to get, as the video quality appears better to me than the One RS, along with the same reliability (and cold performances). *Edit* Mmm.. seems like the gain still does not seem to be fixing the clipping issues, but mic volume control might? I guess I'll take Ben's advice and consider the One RS harder..

I've been using an akaso brave 6+. Is it the best camera out there? Probably not, but it has good image stabilization, an external mike can just plug into the usb C port and it records in hi def. Biggest down side is to use the external mike you can't use the waterproof case. You could modify the case, but you'll have to reseal the cable after battery/sd card changes. For about $100 it's good enough for me.

Im kind of astonished that you haven’t thought about getting an external mic set up instead of directly recording the sound to the camera. In my experience you get way better audio from using proper microphones and a recording device, yeah it can be a pain to sync up the audio in post but it enables you to use the proper mics and settings for what you’re recording. For example I was able to use a helmet microphone for my speech and put another mic under the seat to get the engine sound, that way I can hit my voice with denoising and get clear engine sound without any wind noise.

Nice to hear the insta is working well. I'm interested in adding a secondary 360 camera later but what I would say about the Osmo action 3 setup that I use is that getting 2 tracks of audio separately is a gamechanger if anyone wants to up their sound game on motovlogs. I use the DJI wireless mic set with the osmo action 3 and I get left and right channels from separate microphones that I can place where ever I may choose. This is the best way to get near flawless audio as I can also adjust the gain separately on both channels. I ofcourse blend the channels together in post to get perfect stereo sound from each side. Motorcycle sounds can be absolutely perfect but so can the helmet audio. Then there is slightly more to be done on the edit but not much after you get the levels right straight on the mics. Plus this way there is no need to sync audio between the channels as both are written in to the helmet camera video file directly. Maybe I should make a video about this but historically these tech videos do not perform well on my channel...

Thankyou for the review. I use an Osmo with the cheapest (like $1) external mic which is tucked inside the flip helmets chin wind shield. All these condenser mics have huge amounts of gain and just gives horrible distortion. Easy to fix, solder, as a suggestion, a 150 Ohm resistor across the mic element contacts. Still too high then just solder a lower value resistor. No need to buy any bits to hang off the helmet.

Now that I've considered getting back into it, I see no reason to buy back into gopro. Thank you for this video, it and many others are helping me make an informed decision in a market I haven't kept up with for quite some time.

I use OA1 & OA3 along with the DJI wireless mics. Have a Hero9 that's typical GoPro Junk. The wireless mic paired with the OA3 is a game changer. I can then use the OA1 mounted all over the bike as well as one of the wireless mics. I'm set! :)

As a audio video nerd I agree 100% with literally everything you are saying. Literally just created a whole new motovlog setup (restarting the channel...again) and i had nothing but problems with my hero8. Our hero9 camera doesn't have a working rear screen (Not our fault) and we HATE them. I think you just sold me on upgrading. I have actually been filming via my phone now because it just works.

I've been making moto videos for 3 years and this is an absolute eye-opener. I've been doing everything with the GoPro 7 until now and I've wasted so much money trying to make it work with a microphone. I think it's time to go a differente route with the helm-cam and only use gopro as a 2nd camera.. Hitting the subscribe button has never been easier, thanks!

You gotta try the Insta360 Go 2 as your helmet cam. I use it more as my helmet cam than the One RS (which i usually mount it on a stick on my bike). The controlled recording duration is heaven sent. I set mine at 30s recording only per press on Go 2, and i could selectively shoot only good scenes without having bulky video file in 1 go. The main disadvantage for Go 2 is that you can't really talk while on the go. Only built-in mic.

Excellent video and great timing. I've been wanting to get a camera for a while, but constantly turned off by glitches, malfunctions and general "not working" issues that are present. I'll be focusing and researching this camera. Thanks for the great video.

Great advice. i have been struggling with go pro audio for years, gonna go with insta, great advice. As usual.

We went with the DJI Action 3 - and audio is definitely still the struggle. We are using a DJI Mic setup - they are great mic's, and you can adjust the gain down, but if you forget to do that, the audio is completely blown out. Audio is easily the biggest struggle. We may have to try a insta 360 some day, sounds cool. Thanks for the update!

I found a camera which is specifically designed to be used with all kinds of helmets (motorbike, horse riding, bicycle) The Techalogic DC1. Its one of those barrel tube cameras, but it has 1 big difference.. It has 2 cameras built into it, one for forwards, one for backwards. It records both cameras in 1080p and as separate files, so you get video files for the front cam and videos files for the rear cam. It only has a pinhole microphone built into the camera, so i use one of those cheap digital audio recorders used for taking dictation. And run a little clip on mic to the inside of my helmet. Works like a charm. I get to record everything around me and i get to talk to the people in youtube land.

I have the insta360 One R. One issue I don’t particularly like about it is you have to put it in a case which makes it a much larger helmet cam. Plus if you want to change the battery you have to pull it out of the case. The mic is also not very good. But like you said the video quality is ok. I also have there X3 which I like better but doesn’t fit well for a helmet cam. The mics are better to on the X3. How did you like the DJI action camera. I heard that they now connect wirelessly with their wireless mic system that allows you to Velcro the mic on the inside of the chin bar. That seems like a good helmet blogging system.

Just a heads up, but with the new update to the Action 3 they added the ability to go to -12db so that might make it work for your use case.

I've run GoPro for a few years, currently make all my content with a Gopro 9. I don't use the audio to vlog and do voice over after in post. So far it has worked without issue for a few years.

Knock on wood I've never yet had an issue with my Hero 9. I also have the Insta 360 One T but use it exclusively as a 360 camera. Perhaps it's time to get the 4k lens and have a go at using it as a vlogging camera?
@germsws Жыл бұрын
no offense, on the Action 3, the mic negative gain has been available since at least the last update from DECEMBER and is only available when you have a mic plugged in. Not sure if you never updated the firmware or just arent familiar with this specific qwirk in the settings or didnt do the research and troubleshooting. I also wont deny an audio issue with the Action 3, from the internal mics and usb mics. However, I would suggest using some cheap wireless usb c mic setup. The "common" cheap one found on ebay for $10-30 (depending on number of mics) is what i use and the audio is FANTASTIC now. 2 mics in the kit I got, small enough to fit in the helmet next to the cheek pad and the other tucked under the seat to get the best exhaust audio when desired. usb c wireless receiver is small enough to mount off the side of the Action 3, or you can run a short usb c extension and mount the receiver elsewhere if you dont want it hanging off the side of the camera.

Great comparison! I made the jump to insta360 last year. Have a oneRS with the regular lens, and one with the 360 lens. And have a Go2. Great combo. Just got the new handlebar remote, it's a game-changer!!

Thank for this content, it is the first time that I’ve come across your channel. I bought the one RS last year to record my rides but when I download idea and try to edit it, I find that it is quite involved and my technological knowledge is apparently lacking. Be and ride safe.
@PhilTonic Жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot you've said and experienced the same problems. However I stopped using the One RS because the external mic gain control is not working as it should. It only reduces the overall volume instead of reducing the recording sensitivity, which would give you better dynamic range. It's such a shame that every action cam manufacturer messes up in one field or another. I would have gone for the Action 3 if it hadn't had the infamous focus issue. As of today I'm still on the Hero 7. It does have a bug that it doesn't like being shut off too early after having been turned on, but for the rest of the time it is working and the audio is best.

I've been using a Hero 7 with a Ulanzi mic adapter and thankfully even after filming over 60 episodes on my most recent bike adventure, haven't had the issues that others complain about. I'm still getting decent quality and stabilization. It's never crashed on me either. It will get hot if you put it in your pocket and battery life isn't huge. I'd like to eventually get the insta360RS but man, it's like a thousand bucks to get one of those to my door.

No idea about current market, but when I bought my action cam, (GP2 era) sony had them soundly beat (mechanical and digital image stabilizing, stereo input vs mono, 3.5mm and usb input, av/hdmi output cord available, bluetooth control with your phone, including downloading videos to your phone and being able to see what you were actively recording) For what it's worth, my memory says Fortnine hates his insta360's but still uses them due to creative shot angles.

Thanks, I just looked and the 360 lens version is kinda spendy but they have the 4k version for only $249. I dont know how much I would use the 360 anyway. The mic adapters are reasonably priced too. So thanks again, I'll be looking at them.

Perfect timing! I just got back into riding and bought a '22 CB500x, and been trying to get decent footage from my GoPro Hero 7. The Time-lapse is terrible and on video mode the audio is just as bad, or worse with all the noise. I heard you say in one of your recent videos that you didn't like GoPro time-lapse for some reason, but it seems that the lack of adjustability is probably the largest reason. It's so choppy it's terrible. Love your content and man, do these videos make me miss the PNW!

Sony FDR-X3000 is in my humble opinion the better choice...Floating lens for stabilization and no mic adapter needed I use a Sony Mic that just plugs into the back...it also has a remote that is not very great...ALSO!!..it is narrow and aerodynamic I don't notice it on my helmet. record's in 4K

Great review. I'm still running my old Hero 7 Black and never had any issues with it other than little things about it that I'd like it to do like 4K with stabilization. I haven't done the mic thing yet as it is usually an annoying ongoing commentary as I have discussions with myself way too often inside my helmet and do my comments in post. I've been thinking about playing with a 360 camera and was not aware of the modular capability of the insta nor is 4k non 360 lens so thanks for sharing this, I might be picking one of these up soon based on your review.

Best thing to do is record audio separately with something like a DJI Wireless where the microphone records internally and doesn't need to send the audio anywhere to be plugged into the camera. It takes no time tj sync in post production with free software and adds just a few minutes to the work flow.
