The Great Luis Conte.
Yes, I owe so much to this guy... one of my favorite overall percussionist... and one that really transcended latin patterns in American pop music.
He taught us all that it's ok to introduce patterns and rhythms from our cultures and mix them in whatever we may be playing.

Hi Alex J. rosen here 63 y.o. from the South Shore Massachusetts. Started playing at 17 years old and have been playing ever since congas that is so listen to a lot of Santana excetera to get started but the funny thing is I never understood the word tumbao till just a few years ago. Always played my version of it slap on 3 + 7 + 8 kind of ghost note the rest basically what I'm saying is I've been playing for over 40 years without really understanding my instrument and you now have taken me over that hump to become more one with my instrument thank you so much for that your videos are amazing I'm sure your help so many but I'll tell you this you brought on a new respect that I now have with my instrument thank you so much for that I guess it was just my version of it that I played which was okay because it was presented with style but now you brought me over to the other side thank you so much

@@APercussionLife To double check, where is the 1 on this? If I put the 1 after the two tumba open tones, it's literally 3-2 cascara (how I heard it at first). Is it meant to be?

Bro that's some nice playing but at least from the lessons I've taken from Luis his tumbao is the same tumbao you hear everywhere else. It's a nice rhythm you play but I'm not so sure that's a tumbao cool though it is. And you're right he's a very humble guy, funny and loaded with stories from being in the business and the various factors that shaped his playing. My lessons from him have taught me a lot more than percussion technique. I always have a million questions too. Lol.

Eric! You're passion for these drums is infectious my man! I appreciate all your efforts! And I love how you pick out your inspirational parts of other percussionist solos, or sections of a song where you hear a pattern or rhythm that catches your attention. I'm the same exact way. I hear a certain section of a song that I like, and I listen to it over and over and over again! Trying to master that particular percussionists way that he played that part in that song. And I know you get a lot of suggestions, and I'm not trying to throw another one onto your plate. But, if you feel so inclined I think that it would be cool for you to do one of your videos during the week of how Eric Perez likes to play. And a Eric Perez solo. So maybe, one day, someone else could say I'm going to show you this Eric Perez Tumbao, or this Eric Perez, Guan, guan co, that I heard him do! And I don't think it would be selfish for you to do something like that. I think you've pretty much proved that you are a student and a lover of these drums. And showing us, your style, and how you like to get down, is alright with me my man!

and thanks for pointing out 'ghost notes' being so important, they keep the subdivision or internal pulse going in the body rather than people going kind of stiff between played notes which is way too common. I think you talked about accents being important, they can be all-important as well as the ability to control their volume. Accent as in spoken/sung language gives so much more meaning and in a big way can contribute to the 'swing' of things with just that and the ergonomic energies imparted can physically impel or move notes one way or the other in time giving the 'sticking' of a stroke combined with accents supreme importance in musicality and tastyness!

Hi Eric, como estás chamo? I'm from Venezuela and there is The super band: "GUACO" (I don't know if ya listen to them), and his conga player is Wladimir Quintero (@vladitimba). This dude had a peculiar style in his performance of the tumbaos, wich are very his own. What will be your impresions of his way of play? Saludos pana!

Slightly unrelated, but watching your videos every week really made me want new heads, so I thought to replace all 5 heads. I'm in the process now, but was disappointed in the lack of discounts for large orders so I'm going to shrink it to 3. (I know it's not the amount but the feeling of getting a deal was missing). Since you promote Manito can you get coupon codes for us? :)

okay. love it . but he is an incredible technical talent. why do people who play with groove and taste are not given credit for technique. this guy has both. solos all over the youtube. Luis does it all. Giovanni plays ALL instruments . all. he is a magnificient shekere and udu player. check out his videos with Gadd for evidence. these guys ALL have chops for days! period. Its only one part of the high level musicianship which the general public barely or never will understand their depth. Both Luis and Phil Collins are both south paw. So Luis has both prodigious technique and musicianship combined period. not one or the other. Pedrito is an unbelievable bata and cajon player and singer as well. The key here is melody. They all sing. A percussionist must sing what he plays and sing the melodies which will always connect the rhythm to melodic cadence in tasteful and musical ways. Ever notice that when Luis , Pederito, Giovanni play or solo they ALWAYS sing. they know tunes. not just patterns.
