I did a little bit of specifically Muay Thai. However, my Krav Maga instructor and my Muay Thai instructor were the same person. Same pad/bag/partner stuff that we did in boxing and kickboxing. Muay Thai is inarguably the best striking art and in being an ancient combat art that still holds up to today's standards, it is essential to have the clear understanding of Muay Thai. Elbows, knees, kicks, are all essential. It is an essential tool to have on your belt. Great video!

In my opinion Muay thai, as any other martial art/combat sport/whatever can and does work in a self defense scenario, as long as: 1 You cover all ranges. In Muay thai case, that means you need to learn how to get off the ground. 2 You don't get caught in positions which are normal with rules, but horrible without them. In the Muay thai case, dont put your neck/face close to their mouth in the clinch, or you may get biten. Learn the new head positioning game within the clinch, with the bites (and headbutts) included. 2.5 You don't get caught with attacks forbidden/unusual within your system. In the Muay thai case: adress the eye rake/throat rip/groin attacks/clothes&hair&ears grabs within the clinch (mainly). 3 You train with (a certain degree of) speed, resistance, impredictability, and stress/distractions (ofc, safety first). Muay thai does that pretty well, as there's a ton of sparring. 3.5 Adress fighting with a holistic aproach. That means, train fighting from a natural stance, in the middle of an argument, adress sucker attacks. 4 Be good at attacking. Doesn't really matter how you attack, but you can't focus only on defense, nor even on counterattacks. You must get good at attacking to be effective at a self defense situation. Muay thai does that. 5 Adress multiple attackers and weapons. Yeah, sure, most likely you're going to lose (if the oponent/s has same level). Still, train it. 6 Add 1 min/10 seconds/5 seconds/1seconds rounds to your training. A fight is then very different than when you fight 3rounds of 5 minutes (took this idea from Ando Mierzwa) 7 Take the proper goal. It's not the same fighting, than self defense. The last one has legal aspect that you must adress, and the pourpouse is not winning, but arriving to your home alive, and avoiding to have to deal with a second round of law/revenge issues. 8 Train your prevention of problematic situations, awareness and deescalation abilities. PD: I think (personally) muay thai is great to get striking sparring. Even if for not other reason, that makes it useful for self defense. Ultimately, its what works for YOU NOW. That might by decided by the distance from your home to the dojo instead of the martial art, and for sure, its more important the teacher, than the art.

always good to add in some muay chaiya defense to muay thai like blocking with your elbows straight punches with the 4bs of defense from muay chaiya/boran. my muay thai is trained for self defense not really sport combat, so i do start with the muay thai stance and train from there or from the muay boran stance and on from there. muay chaiyas 4bs of defense for the head supplements the head defense to muay thai and turns your blocks into attacks as well which is good for bareknuckle street in my opinion.

Punches, kicks, (especially the Low Kick) elbow strikes, knee strikes, clinch-fighting; all these things are critical for self defense. Furthermore, Muay Thai will get you in shape. If a system can get you knocked out, it's good for self defense. So basically ALL systems can work as long as you train realistically. This is where traditional MAs (usually) miss it. They don't incorporate semi or full contact sparring in their training (I mean with protections of course) and that is where sports (usually) get it right since contact is part of them.

Yes I completely agree. Combat sports are looked down by many self defense and traditional MA practitioners for being sports. But they are the most effective method to test what works. Great video. I do train muay thai and specifically do sparring and pad work to drill some SD leaning moves. Just a couple things. Teeps are surprisingly effective. I really like the long guard (check out Jeff Chan's adaptation of it, it's very muay thai like) because you start off in a "I don't want any trouble pose", you can quickly determine reach, you can grab his arm or wrists or do some hand traps or parrys, and really sets you up well for a fight ending straight or elbow combo, The only thing I don't like about muay thai is a very static stance sucks vs multiple opponents (I mean you're screwed either way right?), you still need to know some wrestling and or BJJ and you need to adapt your stance (bladed more like a boxer is better), drills and guard for the streets.

Yes but the problem with Lethwei is the art itself is like a very unrefined version of Muay thai. It offers little to no techniques. Muay thai teaches people to be a trained fighter while Lethwei teaches people to ... have a fair 1-1 street fight. Tbh, using the headbutt doesnt need teaching. Anyone, trained or untrained, can do the headbutt move and that's why Muay thai is very good in self defence. Just do a dirty head butt in a clinch/

It's a tool like any other. Very good when you are faced with someone who is already amped up and bobbing around "boxing" but bot so great for more ambiguous situations where someone is being a dick and you don't know whether it's going to go off or not. There's an adage that "If all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail" and it's very easy to find yourself in court for using something like Muay Thai in a self defence situation.

As someone from a gojuryu karate background, the ‘no hooks in traditional karate’ comment is wrong. Otherwise cool

For those getting this video suggested to them in 2021 -- if you are looking to train self-defense, Muay Thai is not a self-defense oriented martial art. Like most martial arts it has some qualities that might help you, but alone it is not suited to keeping you safe and alive. Since Muay Thai is VERY hard on the body, you won't get to keep what you learned into old age -- your training becomes eventually useless. And when you get older is when you are most likely to get attacked. ... WHAT I'D SAY YOU SHOULD LEARN Aikido -- Learn from someone who knows other martial arts as well. Someone who only knows Aikido can't fight. Crane Fist (aka; eastern style boxing) -- Unlike western boxing, this is geared for self defense; no gloves, no tape. Tai Chi -- Learn from someone who can show you the combat applications of Tai Chi's various movements. BJJ -- You aren't looking for how to "end a fight on the ground". Learn how to stand back up when tackled. Muay Thai -- specifically, learn how to strike hard and quickly. This can be essential against a large strong attacker. ... If you learn all of these, you can defend yourself. You have some chance against multiple attackers, against weapons, against people bigger/stronger/faster than you, against a trained boxer, against someone who can wrestle, etc etc. It's a reasonably full package. The most important of these is to learn Aikido and Tai Chi, imo. You learn so much about how to position your attacker, so you can move them out of the way and get to the door. Plus these two arts can be effective even if used by someone who is getting older and isn't strong.

But Muay Thai and Japanese Jūjutsu are perfect for self-defense. Both are ancient martial arts used in warfare. Japanese Jūjutsu has the best grappling techniques for combat. Muay Thai for striking. I learned both of these styles and favor them. I did learn other styles, too, but I always main Jūjutsu for grappling and such. Muay Thai is my main striking style. My personal fighting style will be way more unorthodox and will have my own inner tactics.

now that we got a little bit more to lethwei, we know it would fit your requiremet of going full blast from bell to bell even more than European mentality of muay Thai.. Since they only win by KO, and there is nothing like kicks beeing scored higher than punches to change the look of the fight... Also the headbutt aspect and it beeing fought bareknuckle.. Its the closest to a real fight there is, speaking of standup fighting

The general argument that fighters in x can handle themselves on the street is too simplistic. IMO Thai is great for SD because of the way it transitions between clinching and punching/elbowing in the typical CQ range that street attacks tend to happen in - being able to cover and smother and fight back out is optimal. Like all fight sports, it benefits from strategic re-calibration and the addition of some dirt, e.g. headbutts. On the flip-side, you would probably dispense with most of the kicking if you were looking at SD which means 70% of what you learn in Thai isn't necessarily transferable which makes it less ideal in a sense. You'd need to take the high probability techniques and give them focus.

How about side kick to the knee I’m stead of traditional switch kick which is to risky and to telegraphic and Muay Thai round kick, which has power but wouldn’t the groin be more effective technique since if it lands it would cause more damage than hitting the thigh muscle? Or even spear finger to the eyes would be even better? The damage done would be very high which you could follow with knee to body or shot to liver? The eyes can’t be conditioned and getting hit there agonising. It also doesn’t take much muscle etc to hit so it seems effective target maybe? Not sure about the knees side kick

@@sophiawoods6748 in a world where the mind and body can still target something like the knee under that kind of pressure, we're still talking about a highly trained skillset and an area of the body that doesn't shut down the system. Eye and groin are good targets but not easy beyond pre-emption and pre-emption is very difficult when faced with genuine fear inspiring opposition. IMO - you take a concept like shredder as your ultimate fall-back but you have frames, CCC concepts as your intermediary with most of your hopes pinned on the fence, de-escalation and disengagement strategy. If things get physical, you're up against it and mostly it's very close, very fast and aggression is more important than technique.

I hate this "sport vs self defense" argument so much! Fight someone who has trained Muay Thai for a long time if you're not used to full resistance clinch fighting and they will elbow and knee the fuck out of you!

I used to only like boxing and hated anything out of asia. After taking muy thai I changed my opinion. It is more effective that boxing but is reasonably easy to pick up. Why only use hands if someone is trying to hurt you?
