Out of the 200 million phones Apple shipped in 2020, 80% of them were sold to upgraders and not first-time buyers. And this isn't unique to Apple. In fact, it’s the reigning economic model used by most successful companies. Instead of attracting new customers, these companies focus on making sure that the people that already love their brand always have a reason to keep coming back. But how do they do that? Sure, brand loyalty is one thing, but how do they keep us upgrading so regularly?

Hey Mike, that's a cool video. A mere suggestion - can you put the names of the soundtracks (literally all of them) you use in your videos in the description ? Also, I have a few suggestions for the topics you take for your upcoming videos. I hope you'd be open to them. 1. SUPERHEROES, why we love them, the science, mythology and philosophy behind them. 2. CLONING: Human Cloning, it's applications, it's dangers, it's misusage, ethical considerations, Political interests, National security and so on. 3. Any concepts of PSEUDOSCIENCE, FANTASY. Do take the philosophical approach, but also more scientific approach. It would really help with my research. Need a comprehensive view on the topics. I hope you'd consider them. I'd like to learn them from your Videography.

I personally find ads for investment platforms quite inappropriate for educational content. Also moving the ad spot from the end to the middle might increase reach and impressions, but it ruins the viewing experience everyone is used to get from Aperture. Maybe try moving it to the start at least? Or do something like "this video is sponsored by X, more details at the end of the video", and keep the actual video intact without ad breaks.

In the 1920s, the American car industry added the "year" to the car, saying the year in the year and owning an old one sounds old, this is called Perceived Obsolescence. GM got the Americans thinking it's impossible for cars to be driven more than 50,000 miles. The Japanese car manufacturers broke that rule and their cars ran through 100,000 and more. Older Japanese cars yeah, but nowadays they're just as bad. It's actually a joke looking at the quality of these newer car parts, I'm a mechanic and the one question I always ask myself is "how do they get away with this?" The other week I fitted 2 injector seals on a volvo and whilst doing this a leak off pipe broke, anyway I called Volvo and they wanted over £40 for the one leak off pipe fitting. I then called Citroen (the people who made that specific engine) and they charged less than £20 for not just 1 fitting, but all 4 including the rubber hoses joining them. A lightly faster CPU that is of no benefit for me? A slightly better camera when I'm no social media victim? All I need is to make calls, and occasionally check something on internet when I'm in town and maybe google maps navigation from time to time. Getting new phone would not benefit me in any way, so why waste totally fine device??? E-waste is already massive issue and since it doesn't pay off to recycle any of this (it's just too costly), people changing totally fine electronics just because trends oh having something latest do nothing but pollute our planet - and ofc corps don't give fuck, all they care is how to top revenue from last year.

The one thing I did like about computers was the idea of upgrading a single part of something. If I wanted a better CPU, I could just get one, if I wanted more ram I could just buy it. Apply this to stuff like light bulbs, instead of throwing out the whole bulb make it possible for us just to replace and buy filaments. Or for a phone just have us be able to take it apart and redo the internals like a computer. And for clothes make re-dye shops and have fabric that we can have added and removed from existing clothes. Modularity is great for this purpose.

I think if the obsolescence wasn't planned, the light bulb which works for about 1 year now, would have worked for maybe about 5 years, that's all, not necessarily making progress stagnant. All these companies have done, is reduced the life of the products knowingly. Products were never immortal. There'd still be the room for progress and upgrades. Sure, the pace of the progress would be slow as compared to what it is now, but do we really need this pace is the question. There would be need for progress and then the progress would happen, not the other way around.

I had my iPhone 10 since it came out in 2017 and only recently replaced it 2 months ago only because the charging port no longer worked. I also had the same pair of Vans shoes for over 7 years and recently replaced those because the soles were worn through. If you want to stop spending so much on stuff all the time, get clothes and items that are _made to last._ Don't just go out and buy any cheap pair of shoes, take the time to find a pair that are made with quality materials by a company that purposefully makes them to last you a while. Yes, it may cost a little extra, but that's _much_ better than having to replace it every year. Find what items work best for you, and stick with them until they are worn out.

The products are no longer made with the intention to last. You've missed the point. The high quality iphone 10 you owned is an avalanche of the minor upgrades over the years. I have owned 3 smartphones in the past decade. All 200$ or less. They last 3 years and then they become obsolete. How can you be satisfied with an iphone lasting 5 years? The price should warrant much more. Your phone became obsolete. Apple knew it and you should know it too. No offense though.

@@ss_avsmt I appreciate your opinion and I welcome a respectful discussion. That being said, the reason I can be content with a phone that cost me above $500 lasting 5 years is because I constantly witness people buying new and overpriced things as soon as they see a colorful ad for it. I am well aware of how it became obsolete. Honestly, I’m content with how much use I got out of it and how long it lasted considering the world’s standards nowadays. I spend my money on simple things that I know I will get their use out of, even if they are not the “best or newest,” unlike so many other people I see around me.

Once this happens, you simply can't use the app anymore. Recently more and more apps have been dropping off, at rapid pace and it feels intentional. The yearly updates will slow down your phone because it's more demanding. The updates are more demanding because they're designed with newer hardware in mind and thus will have more features that the newer hardware takes best advantage of. And the reason that they gave for slowing phones down wasn't "bs" either, batteries will degrade and lose performance, there isn't a way around that. 3. Any concepts of META PHYSICS, PSEUDOSCIENCE, FANTASY. Do take the philosophical approach, but also more scientific approach. It would really help with my research. Need a comprehensive view on the topics. I hope you'd consider them. I'd like to learn them from your Videography.

@@iustin1658 see previous. If you want certain features, you have to give up other ones. If you want a privacy respecting phone with modular modems and hard cut off switches, you can't have it be thin and sleek. If you care about privacy, you'll give up something to get it, that's what taking agency in your purchases is. You look at what you want, you look at what you don't, and you pick the best option for you. Not everyone wants, needs, or would even benefit from a privacy first device. Those people have every right to not get one, just as you have every right to get one. Failure to take personal accountability for the features you want is how the EU gives itself the shiny new precedent to install police bypass chips in consumer devices because a few apple fanboys couldn't bare having to get an Android if they want USB-C charging. After all, if the EU could mandate hardware for a minor annoyance like needing to have a different cable on-hand, why couldn't they mandate police bypass chips that could SAVE LIVES? I mean we were okay with them doing it to fix a minor annoyance because "APPLE BAD", and letting the police get into your devices could literally save lives, so clearly that's also okay, right? Precedent is the foundation of all government power, and the EU just got a shiny new one because people couldn't take accountability for their purchases.

Gotta love how Apple trying to prolong their phones life span by attempting to reduce battery degradation is seen as planned obsolescence. I've used iPhones since the beginning and will upgrade every 4-5 years, haven't had any issues. But there is a problem, its weak minded impulse buyers who can't properly budget thinking they need to upgrade every year. Even in this video the point was made that you shouldn't upgrade every 1-2 years because your phone still works just fine... minutes after stating that phones nowadays are designed to fail after 18 months.

I'm somewhat of an audiophile, I like high quality music. The thing is, good audio is forever. There's people who upgrade headphones frequently, as if sound quality magically improves every year. Thing is, a headset from 3 decades ago capable of near perfectly reproducing the human hearing range is still able to do that today. Thinking of the current world situation, it might be a smart move to recycle/repair things, but I'm pretty sure we are too early for this mindset right now. Maybe we need the total economical collapse first.

@@StaticCollapse I think that's been tried a few times in the past hundred years. Usually ends with mass starvation. The current system is the most efficient, if eco friendly stuff was more efficient then everyone would already be doing it.

@@breadman32398 Companies without any regulation only consider the most profit. If they could sell you last years phone without any new hard improvements and just a cosmetic difference they would. It's idealistic to believe that their profits go into R&D.

@@breadman32398 if you can’t accept the system is inefficient while staring at one of the biggest problems with it, you’re beyond help. Funny thing is these companies and their executives don’t give a shit about you and would have you in one of their for profit prisons if they could, at least it wouldn’t be mass starvation right 🤣🤣 and you better be thankful for the opportunity! They’re giving you 3 square meals and a job, paradise!
