We live in a constant state of anxiety, waiting for the next time our phones will light up so that our brains can be flooded with that rush of pleasant emotions caused by none other than dopamine, the most controversial hormone. On the one hand, Pinterest is rampant with photos of people tattooing the molecule on themselves. Fashion magazines and blogs flaunt dopamine fashion trends, bright, bold colors that can supposedly trigger the coveted chemical release.

I love this topic. The sad part is that the people I want to send this to wouldn't even make it past the first minute because their attention span is so damn short. Honestly, I'm just a KZbin junkie and I guess it's really not different but all the rest is overrated and overwhelming. I personally enjoy longer videos that have actual substance that can be applied to my daily life.

A couple days ago i have realized i have a youtube addiction and that is why literally nothing is happening in my life. I wake up with youtube, go to sleep with youtube and watch it for hours a day with a few crucial tasks in between to stay alive. it has consumed my life, and it is so difficult to break out of this cycle. On that day, I told myself I'm gonna quit" and yet im right here binging youtube once again and don't know what to do. as on one hand its a great tool that is awesome in small doses, with all the information in the world on it, but it also kind of makes me lazy by not me having to actively look up information and research it, but others do it for me in form of video and presenting it.

What do you do in the mean time? I mean if you're just sitting around or something, personally I tend to use my phone when I'm sitting down or chilling out, I don't use it just on the go or anything but whenever I'm sitting down I would most likely be using it. So my question is, what do you do when you're just sitting down and/or have nothing to do? I feel like there's no reason other than to rest but that never lasts more than a few minutes when you're just sitting down unless you go into deep thoughts or something. Especially when you're a young person.

When my daughter was about 12 years old, she was no longer able to sit and watch a movie with me. She said she got too anxious and fidgety and needed to spend time on her phone. I thought that was ridiculous. But now I struggle as well. I can’t read books anymore. There’s just too many other things I’d rather do that I could learn quickly. I no longer watch the bachelor anymore because there’s so many other interesting things to watch. I’ll start watching a movie and then think about all the other possible movies I could be watching. It’s a very strange feeling.

As someone who suffers from ADHD, I can tell you a chronic lack of dopamine really blows. People don't realize just how critical it is to basic functioning, doing things that for a "normal" person require little to no thought or energy, are a seemingly insurmountable mountain of effort and struggle for a person with ADHD. Even things that provide pleasure and joy for the average person, have a significantly reduced effect for someone with a dopamine deficiency.

stop hiding behind it and adhd stops existing. Did you stop porn? Entertainment? Screentime (which i know for sure you didnt since you are here)? No sugar? Meditation? And for how long? etc. etc. and these are generalized, what about your personal sins? Are you able to really look yourself in the mirror? Doubt it cause you only want to see adhd Its easy when things are labeled, you can hide behind it and stop taking responsibility for your life. Just like your comment suggest you do. dopamine deficiency while on youtube... fack me. Flow state is amazing but it is so hard to achieve. I’ve only ever been able to get it while playing soccer about 2 or 3 times. But the feeling is unforgettable. Ur mind just stops and it’s like ur body is moving on its own. Ur fully immersed and ur concentration is on a level you could never feel otherwise. Every movement is precise and quick as if each of ur limbs had a mind of its own. I can just remember one game where nobody could take the ball from me. I was in the zone and it was so amazing that even after the game, the coach and some of the other players came up to me and told me I played a really good game. Nothing like that feeling. I want to clarify that some recent scientific research has demonstrated that dopamine and its corresponding dopaminergic pathways might have more to do with motivation and salience than pleasure. The brain's reward system has stronger ties to endorphin (endogenous morphine) and the brain's intrinsic opioid-benzodiazepine pathways that use neurotransmitters like endorphin. If this is the case, in the example of eating, dopamine is the neurotransmitter that makes you hungry, but endorphin is the neurotransmitter that gives you pleasure from eating food. It might also help to explain heroin and fentanyl's addictive potential, excluding the withdrawal symptoms. They're pure chemical pleasure.

Watching these videos makes me feel like an outsider. I don't spend any time on my phone other than to keep in contact with relatives via text messages and phone calls and to check the flight arrival times for the airport that I work at. Unlike most people, who get a rush of dopamine and a feeling of validation from notification sounds and push notifications, I get either a feeling of annoyance, in which case I groan, or anxiety, in which case I won't look at my phone for hours at a time. I don't ever feel any compelling urge or impulse to look at my phone, and when I happen to receive a text message or an email, I don't look at it immediately. When my phone rings, I have no problem letting it ring and going to voicemail if I happen to be preoccupied with another activity. All in all, I spend barely any time using my phone. For that reason, I feel like a fish out of water when I'm around people in my age demographic who realize and admit that they spend too much time on their phones. I simply cannot relate to them. However, I can clearly see that technology addictions are a serious problem affecting my generation.

APERTURE: Can you do a video on ketamine addiction? Ketamine is an NMDA blocker not associated with dopamine but has a "dissociative" effect. It is considered very safe, has no overdose potential, and physical dependence addiction is considered not "physically" addictive, meaning no withdrawal symptoms. It seems to create the dissociation effect from dopamine addiction, allowing someone to be less stressed and be present. It also can be used for pain and depression effectively. It seems to create the "new lenses" and allow us to constantly be in the pleasure part of our brain. It can make focusing at work very difficult, but it is better to communicate with colleagues by understanding their perspectives. High doses can create the "shower effect" and give you answers to work and life problems.

@@squarerootof2 Good question. Communications in the brain are via neurotransmitters, neuron tail releases dopamine to neuron heads, and dopamine is the neurotransmitter used on the reward system. The dopamine surge is when something makes a lot of neurons release a lot of dopamine (a strong stimulus, like crack). Things that have that effect are addictive. Hormone, by definition, is a substance that mediates communication between distant organs, like adrenalin. In a rush of adrenaline, the adrenaline is in the blood wreaking havoc on the whole body, a dopamine surge happens from cell to cell in the brain. Like, dopamine surge in the brain altera brain hormones that affect the body.

Yeah very contradictory 😂. And also one oh his newer videos talks about why you should do a dopamine detox as well. Maybe the title was to get more people to click on it? Idk

I always find myself being aware of my addictions like Youtue, and Switch and I have had this mindset that I should one day cut them out. I never really thought about finding a healthy balance with them and accept that my brain chemistry naturally wants stimulation.

I agree, it doesn’t heal wounds, but it can help with mood for many days afterward. Another idea is to limit rather than to cut, which can help but still. We need to see friends and build connections and fight together using the combo method. Cut, then limit afterward. The results will work more effectively because of our environment and the original blow from the cut. Just my thoughts though. (I need to see my friends more often IRL)

One of the games I play is a space simulator, and it honest has good flow but isn’t addictive. The game has combat that wakes us up, and there’s the whole flying to our next destination. Best example I can think of is flying out to Colonia 22,000LY away… it usually take the average person 3 weeks to get there. Those three weeks are boring, but making new discoveries bring you back to that excited feeling. I’d say it’s the least addictive addiction you can have.

Man dopamine is NOT a bad thing itself. Instant gratification itself isn't harmful. Overdependency on such is the real issue. The real problem is that most people in modern society do not know how to control their impulses to fall into a rut of mindlessly pursuing their desires. If you are guilty of this, you need to discipline yourself to control your impulses until it become natural to you. Only then can you truly limit yourself and you can treat yourself responsibly. For example, as a video game fan and psychology student, I can confidently opine that gaming is absolutely OK, as long as you are able to limit yourself and prioritize everything else important in life. It's just like when you are eating a meal, where first you eat the meat (beyond meat if you are vegan) (moral and life obligations and duties), then the broccoli (constructive activities), before you get to eat the ice cream (luxuries and entertainment).

Haha jokes on you I have no social media. I'm just addicted to work, guns, motorcycle, nicotine, women, running a business, dubstep... and I'm only 24. Reason is, social media came out during puberty and ruined so many of my relationships I ditched them all. KZbin is just for learning and existentialism.
