How to Fit The Apex Grade Barrel

Just finished using the jig and the file Apex sales to fit a gunsmith barrel to M&P 2.0. In my case no filing needed at barrel muzzle; less than 10 min to fit at the barrel hood but about an hour and half to fit the bottom locking surface. It was a fun and easy project, thanks for the awesome video and the written instructions available online at opplanet. I will recommend only the gunsmith barrel and spend the time to fit it, semi-drop is a hit or miss.

Just finished using this to fit my barrel. On and off it took me about 5 hours passively while doing other stuff. I had to file down a great deal on both areas and my s&w is new so maybe the fact that I haven't really broken it in yet added to the time. What I will say is to those thinking of going to a gunsmith, it's cheaper to just grab the jig & the file from Apex for $90 and combine it with a little elbow grease and patience and you'll save a few bucks by not having to have a professional gunsmith do it but aside from that, you'll want to keep this tool and use it the next time you're fitting a barrel.

Thank you for this video. I followed the directions step by step. I did not need to remove material off the Barrel part (a) But i did need to remove material to Fit (b) and (c). Now my 9mm full size 5" barrel, shoots perfectly and functions perfectly in my SW MP40 2.0 Performance Center Pro Series. 200 rounds sent at the range yesterday, perfect. Thank you again :D

Short version: Just finished testing my APEX Semi Drop in barrel on a M&P 9mm. It is stupid accurate. I have 2 factory M&P barrels and both their tolerances on fitment are too loose (noticeably). So much so it actually made me angry at Smith & Wesson for making such subpar barrels. From here on out all my pistol barrels will be APEX barrel semi drop ins.

It's not exactly the tolerance of the factory barrel, but the slide and frame combined. Our barrel is accurate because it dramatically increases the dwell time. To do that the barrel has to be fitted to both the slide and the barrel, and each M&P is different with different slide to frame fit. Glad you like the Apex Grade Barrel.

I think I might have to try for a gunsmith fit barrel soon. My slide tolerance is so loose the semi drop in literally dropped in with extra play in every direction. Even tried a new locking block with not much difference

No, do not use power tools. Just a very, very fine grit paper.

Thanks for the video. The hood width on my Apex barrel fit out of the box. I did have to adjust the hood length to fit. I did not, however, have to remove any material from the fitting pad on the bottom. Is this indicative of a tolerance issue in the frame itself?

We've seen them all over the place. Some guns require a lot of fitting while others do not.

Your website says that barrel fitting may not be required on all slides. Do you have a ballpark percentage of how often a hand fit is required?

No, but you still will most likely have to fit the barrel to the frame.

I got my order from Brownells, along with a 1911 fitting jig!!! 😡 So that’s on the way back to Brownells, but the file, should it only be a quarter of an inch wide? It’s very small... do I have the right file? Says it’s “40076N” “Cut 0” “6”/152MM” “20/08” also says “Pillar” and “Narrow”.

Not that terrible since they are such a close fit already. A glock 17 barrels fits in and is only a mm or so away from being fully operational. I ask this because a glock 17 barrel is less than half the price of a threaded barrel for a SD9ve which are hard to find as well. I like the extended barrel look.

Is this compatible info to a glock? I have a p80 and I have a “ drop in barrel” and it’s got 15 thousands of movement.. you said 2 is acceptable. It’s marring up my barrel something terrible after trying multiple barrels with the same result I’ve decided the slides the issue. I’m wanting to custom fit a barrel to the slide. Can this jig be used for glock pattern barrels and do you guys offer a barrel like I’m looking for.

We do not offer a Glock barrel. This jig is specifically for use with our M&P Barrels. The movement reference is based on our design and is not applicable to the Glock platform, where dimensions and tolerances may be different.

I feel like there’s way too much material on the frame parts of the barrels they can literally be machined before hand fit that’s how much material needs to be removed

It will vary from gun to gun due to the wide variances in the tolerances of the the M&P models. We've seen more than a couple M&P pistols over the years and we're well versed on how wide the tolerance range is on these guns.

You have to understand the accuracy issue with the M&P models. It is due to tolerance variations. In order to achieve the kind of accuracy the Apex Grade Barrel delivers the barrel has to be fitted to both the slide and the frame. We did a whole video on this issue when we introduced these barrels.

We do, that's why it is so accurate. To achieve true accuracy, the kind that can deliver sub-one inch groups at 25 yards, you have to fit the barrel to both the slide and the frame in the M&P. @@delkor007 No, not even close. That is literally not how this works. The barrel has to be fitted to both the slide and the frame of the gun it is being installed to. And each M&P is different in its tolerances from other M&Ps.
