When I played rugby, the best referee moment I came across was when a player from my team thought he'd scored a clean try - he hadn't - and spent some time arguing with the ref who had disallowed it. @@frglee And yet that's not how it should work, if the official is wrong then match commissioner should be pointing out the errors and reviews of hw officials make decisions in games should be looked at. They are human of course but the problem with most sports is that there is a lot of arbitrary decision making that is not consistent or correct within the laws of a sport and thus we end up with players and fans being frustrated. All we want is better from both players to adhere to the rules and for the officials to be better as well, simply accepting that refs are right when they're wrong is not how things should work.
@cleshsesh61553 жыл бұрын
@@ynotnilknarf39 when it comes to your word against the ref then the ref is in the right. It's different on a professional level when there is TMO as well of course but in an amateur game the refs decision should be final, otherwise it would be anarchy.
@ynotnilknarf393 жыл бұрын
@@cleshsesh6155 Having a captain who can address the referee and ask questions in a reasonable manner can absolutely have an effect on what the referee does. Would a ref change their decision even knowing they were wrong, extremely unlikely at any level, however that's the rub. Even when it's blatantly obvious and has been pointed out refs still stick to their decision, this is wrong and undermines the sports they officiate in, it undermines the laws of the game and gets everyone's backs up as well. Admitting you've made an error in game would draw far more respect and factually be fair than simply sticking to a decision because you're the ref/official. Changing how officials officiate needs to change with input not just from TMO but also from participants - in a moderated/reasonable fashion and from one designated player, shouting and gesticulating will get you nowhere fast except maybe a card. Officials who ignore and a system that ignores this will always draw criticism because they close ranks and ignore the problems which has a direct bearing on outcomes of the event/match.

The context of Nigel Owens calling in both sides (4:20) is that fighting broke out between opposing players after play had moved on down the field (where the referee was). Since he wasn't there to blow his whistle immediately it rapidly descended into a mass brawl as teammates flew in to help their guys. Eventually, he managed to get it under control and because he didn't know who had initiated it and so many players had already thrown punches and other unseemly things, he decided to call in both teams to give them a dressing down rather than send anyone off.

I'm sure you've seen that you should look at "10 Minutes of Nigel being Nigel", do so. A couple of the shots here not clarified for you is: 1 when Nigel to that Scottish player 'come back in 2 weeks', the player was being mouthy and there was a big soccer match at that stadium in 2 weeks. 2 The Georgia prop didn't speak English so Nigel said "I'll shout louder." I've been told that in the UK (possibly lots of places) at the park you can buy headphones tuned into the ref's comms channel so that you can hear the reffing crew chatter, the ref's directions to the players and player chatter within range of the mikes. Nigel retired a few months back from International reffing after 100 matches. I'm not sure if he's going to continue reffing at the pro level or not. He has said that he plans to surprise a few Welsh schoolboy teams by dropping by and reffing their matches. His work as a ref has earned him a MBE (Member of the British Empire) and World Rugby's Man of the Year.
@tomosprice81364 жыл бұрын
1 isn't quite right. The stadium is Newcastle United's stadium but it was being used for the Rugby World Cup in 2015, so Nigel was saying if you carry on like that come back in 2 weeks and play for Newcastle

The thing about Rugby refs is that they are almost always former players. They know what is happening inside the ruck or the maul. They also know how dangerous it can be if done wrong. The tradition is to never complain about he refs before, during or after a game, unlike other sports. In my team we could only say "yes, sir", "no, sir" and "I'm sorry, sir" to the ref unless the captain was there with us. A story about reffing is that when a british ship came to port the local team challenged the ship to a game and the locals asked an officer to ref the game.. simply on the grounds that disobeying the ref was also disobeying orders.. something the local team tried and failed to exploit...

I was playing a game and the opposition scrum half stepped me, so I instinctively flung an arm out and caught him above the shoulder. The ref award them a penalty and said to me that he know scrum half is small but that is no excuse for me tackling him high. All I said was thank you sir and get on with the game.
