Thanks.. how would consumers make a choice between certified oils. there are 1600 oils now SP and GF6. some are 20$ for 4 liters, some go up to 100$. if they're all certified, and the specs say up to 10000mile intervals, whats in the expensive stuff?

So fast forward 2 years and I ran across this situation here in Japan where I found out about the new GF6A standard (Yes I'm late to the party-lol) The oil I bought for my mini-van is some generic certified API SP ILSAC GF-6 5w-30 oil. It doesn't have the "A" after the "6" what does it mean if anything?

Is an API SP-RC 0w-20 the exact same specs as a 0w-20 ILSAC GF-6a?

What if they say it meets the standards but does not have the shield?

Then it does not fully meet the standards. Kinda like saying "comparable to".

Americans think higher viscosity oils are better, and often buy the wrong oil. My toyota hybrids use 0w-16 with the sheild logo.
