@@liorajacob8094 less about the brand and more about the size and the material. Go for either organic cotton, bamboo, or a silk. Something breathable and natural. Size is important. Go for a large square or rectangle. Have a look at Trinny’s channel and you’ll see her wear a scarf as a sarong in lots of videos. That’s the size you want.

Our family of 3 went to Italy a few years ago & stayed in a hotel. Instead of trying to pack enough toiletries we just went to the pharmacia & bought what we needed for 2 wks. We also did laundry in Italy & just bought our soap from the vending machine at the laundry mat.

I'm 64 years old with experience traveling around the world solo since my teens. Like you, I'm a minimalist using only a photo backpack and rollaway which has my travel tripod plus all the other stuff. The strip laundry soap and collapsible containers are cool. The only things I would add to your well-defined list are a reusable bamboo cutlery kit and a silk "cocoon" sheet. Thanx for a great vid! BTW, I wanted to talk about the "weight limit". People pack wayyyyy too much stuff! I've NEVER EVER been over the weight limit in any country on any airline. Wear the heaviest stuff; layer if you have to. (Country count: 50)

You mentioned a travel tripod. Do you travel with carry-on only or is the suitcase with tripod checked in? If you have it in carry-on, have you ever had issues? Cause I would love to bring mine (or buy one that isn’t problematic) and travel without checked-in baggage but I am afraid that my tripod won’t be allowed… would love to know about your experiences :)

For travelling, I have a little "just in case"-pouch. Over the years, I have started to add things that I would have needed at some point. Some of the things it contains: Headtorch, bottle opener, rubber bands, a tiny pair of scissors, a couple of clothespins, a pencil sharpener, sellotape, gluestick, a little lint roller, an emergency tampon, a nightlight (I hate sleeping in rooms that are pitch-black, especially if I don't know them), a multiple plug, a tiny tripod, folded plastic bags, a mini-screwdriver, and also two of the things you mentioned: spices and a sewing kit. I used to have a lighter, but it got confiscated at one airport. Interestingly, I once had a small Swiss pocket knife in the pouch, because I had forgotten to take it out after a non-flying trip. I flew handluggage only from Spain to Germany, and it remained unnoticed. On the way back, at the German control point, they made me take it out and measured the blade. It was short enough to be allowed on the plane, which I found a bit strange. About the collapsible containers: I have one of these, and I'm not one hundred percent convinced. Because they are not rigid, they easily get crushed in a bag when containing food. I once used them for "empanadas" which didn't look their best when I finally got to eat them. With liquid food, I'm always worried that the little cap of the microwave hole might pop out and food will spill out.
@AplinsintheAlps
@AplinsintheAlps 2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting! That sounds like a pretty full pouch, but I love how you add things as you need them! We do keep a bottle opener and headlamp in our tech bag (which Brett carries so it wasn’t featured here in this video). And the containers have been absolutely wonderful so far! But we don’t put liquids in them (I don’t trust those lids for liquids) and we haven’t had a problem with them getting compressed because the seal actually makes it so they can’t compress easily while the lid is on (so you pretty much have to take the lid off to collapse them, which makes sense).

I have a true story about the "travelling with Swiss Army Knife". A few years ago, we flew from Munich to GB. I didnT realise my pocket knife was in our hand luggage, but the German border control took out the blade, measured it inside his jacket (not sure how he measured it) but he was satisfied. I therefore thought nothing about it and didn't put it in the suitcase for the way back. In the UK, the border control asked me about the knife. I said, "It's ok, it's already passed the test in Germany" He said, that might be so in Germany but he was confiscating it anyway, it would be destroyed, or he could send it to us for an enormous price to get it back. I asked why. He withdrew the corkscrew and showed it to me. This, he said, is a dangerous pointed object. I had inherited the knife from my father, otherwise I would have had it "destroyed" (They probably land up on Ebay somewhere, what do I know?) Anyway, I said Send it to me. I started to tell him where I lived and he said, it has to be a UK address. So Im travelling out of England and they confiscate something on the way out that is otherwise acceptable elsewhere? Anyway, I gave my Auntie's address and they sent it there at high cost. She travelled to Germany the next year with it in her suitcase and now I've passed it on to my Grandson...He can use it better than me :-)

Here's a pro tip, merino wool socks and underwear. You can wear them for like 3 days and they don't stink because they're antimicrobial. I mean, most people probably wouldn't want to wear underwear for 3 days but if you're in a pinch or you're hiking, it's very helpful. Just wash them in a sink, and they air dry super fast. Merino wool is very soft, very breathable, but it also keeps you very warm in the winter.

Agree so much. I just came home from a travel and 5 out of my 18 pieces of clothing were thin merino wool (of which 4 were underwear, and 3 were thin tights). I dont have any merino underwear. Hmm, I am going to get me some! I LOVE travelling with cabin luggage only. The freedom both in terms of not being apart from you luggage, and in not hauling many superfluous things around, is addicting. ❤

Merino shirts are practically the only shirt I wear anymore. They’re great for traveling because you can wear them for several days so you don’t have to pack as many. Also they’re very easy to wash in a sink and will dry quickly on a hanger. Plus they come in different weights (thickness) so you can pack according to anticipated temperatures.

The one for the other 3 seasons is the Exofficio. Both have 11 pockets configured specifically for travel. I love both of them. Most days I just wear the vest and then carry a water bottle tote, crossbody. That works well and I can swap shoulders if it gets bothersome. I have never had any problem with customs or TSA. I just tske the vest off, put it in a tote and send it thru the scanner. One very Important tip is to go up a size when buying a vest. Thanks for the great video! From my side I can suggest adding a hydration pack to the luggage - it's basically a plastic pouch with a tube that you can fill up with water. I found it way more convenient than bottles as they take no space when they're empty, and tap water is drinkable in most European countries, so you can just fill it up when needed instead of buying the bottled water. Very convenient for hikes too as you can put it in your backpack too, and are able to drink without using your hands or having to take of the backpack :) Somebody already mentioned solid shampoos and conditioners, another thing I can suggest is to find cosmetics that can have multiple purposes - solid shampoo can double as a soap, a natural oil can be used as body oil, hair conditioner and make up remover. I second the reusable menstrual products - I've been using a menstrual cup for 4 years now and it's the best purchase I've ever made!

I just did 3 weeks in Antarctica with carry-on only with no regrets...especially when I met people about to get on the ship we just got off of who's checked luggage didn't make it!!! Personally if I were staying in Europe that long I'd leave a few of those things to be purchased when I get there, and then tossed before I leave to free up space (the containers, bags, and spices for example). Even for Antarctica I brought the bare minimum of toiletries and then purchased bigger sizes once I got to the port in Argentina before we left. I know we all have our favorite items. But trying new things is great too! I also make full use of the space of an under seat backpack. Those Travelon purses are the best! I have several sizes to choose from depending on the trip. I've also made use of packing items in a small insulated lunch box. It came in handy when, for example, we wanted to bring a couple cold beers to sit in the free hot springs in La Fortuna, CR. Happy travels.

Saving this video, it has some nice suggestions like the soap! Never knew that existed. From my travel experience, I've invested a lot in a "travel jacket", which basically is a lightweight jacket with a lot of compartments and rain protection. If I ever have problems with weight or too much stuff. I just start unloading them in my jacket and move through the airport. It even has enough space for a tablet/laptop! At the gate I put everything back in the bag. Sometimes you just have someone at the desk who wants to make a point :) Also a thing I did, is invest in quick dry clothes. So I tend to only have 3 pairs / sets of clothing which can be easily hand washed and dried in a single evening. Only thing to be mindful of is 1 formal like set, just in case you want to go somewhere which has stricter dress codes (restaurants or certain venues).
@AplinsintheAlps
@AplinsintheAlps 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting comment about the travel jacket! We’ve never had a problem with weight (and never had our bags weighed, although they have been measured), but that’s a good solution. And we used to travel with quick dry clothes but most are not our personal fashion styled so we’ve found alternatives that naturally dry efficiently! For example, I have basic tanks from Old Navy and Brett wears basic V necks from H&M, all of which typically dry pretty quickly! So we suggest you find what works for you, and it sounds like you have! 👍

Skip the laundry sheets/grocery bags and cheap cosmetics. You can just buy them once you go abroad. Pack some travel-size essentials or stuff that is expensive, like non-disposable razors, electronics, etc. If you can buy that item for about 1$, why waste space? Save some space and instead pack an iPad or something. Only pack stuff like that if you have already packed everything and have extra space. P.S. I would skip the cloth pads and just buy regular pads abroad. Cloth pads are quite high maintenance, require washing, take long to dry. You also have to find where to dry them (it's fine if you are staying at a hotel with a private bathroom, but if you are staying at a hostel or with other people, you probably don't want to hang it out for everyone to see). Also, it's an item you don't use that often, and it's not expensive. Unless you have allergies or some other issues, I would stick to just buying regular pads abroad.

Excellent comments Vaida! Some of our clothes wash best in delicate bags, so that’s the primary reason for bringing those. We don’t pack many cosmetics, but all of my makeup is organic and spf and I’m super brand loyal to Jane Iredale! But for generic stuff we just buy it there, like shampoo and toothpaste, etc. We didn’t feature it in this video, but we have a whole separate tech bag for our electronics (laptops and cameras). Actually I wear the cloth pads daily so they are essential for me. Plus they are WAY more comfortable! You’re right they can be embarrassing to hang dry, but we always have a private room/apartment so it’s not an issue. Plus mine dry overnight since they are thinner daily/light pads. I totally recommend trying them! Hope that helps! I love that you’re so thoughtful about your packing 😊

I disagree. I only travel with cloth pads. If it's what you're used to, switching to a disposable on holidays is not worth the headache or being uncomfortable. Not all brands are high maintenance and the ones I use dry very quickly. I know you mentioned hostels, but I don't see this as being any different than underwear in terms of washing or drying. When camping, I find it a lot easier to be discreet about dying pads than underwear.

I agree it SOUNDS sensible to just buy things once you're there, but if you're traveling frequently withIN a trip, you'd just have to keep getting rid of and re-purchasing items over and over again every time you move anyway. So if you're on a budget and/or have the packing skills to keep the products you've tested and know work for you handy, why NOT include them in the first leg of many in your journey? It's just one less logistical step (pharmacy and/or store visit) once you get to each new destination. Aside from the logistical benefits, there's something to be said for the comfort of having some things you just know work well for you in the midst of all the upheaval and stress inherent to travel. I may not know what a new town or experience has to offer, but it's nice to know my eyeliner won't run or sting my eyes, my sunscreen actually works and won't make me break out, and my favorite ultra-light shopping bags have long enough straps to fit comfortably on my shoulders and won't suddenly break as I'm walking down the street with groceries or precious souvenirs.

Some good ideas. I usually wear a heavy sweater with a zipper on the airplane. A scarf is something I like to bring as well. That way I don’t need to pack it. Plus airplanes are often cold. I also take a collapsible plastic dryer with clips to hang hand washed underwear and socks. How do you carry a sewing kit with needles on an airplane? Also, do you ever have a problem because not all your liquids are in a quart bag? I buy dried herbs in the market at my destination. I also like fresh Basil and garlic which also can be bought in the market. I like using plastic packing bags to get more things in my carry on. I use a large Lesportsac purse as my personal item. I put my iPad, phone, wallet, prescriptions and jewelry in it. I suggest a money belt. Eagle Creek has a good one. You can put your money, cards, and passport in it. You wear it around your waist and under your clothes. It keeps your valuables safe.

This is more applicable to USA travel since there are no weight restrictions for for most domestic airlines. Outside of the USA, especially with Budget Airlines, you're limited to 7-8 kgs for carry on. Depending on the Airlines, they definitely check the weight of everything when you check in or before you board. The full service flights you might be able to get away with carrying all that stuff. especially if it doesn't look bulky heavy as they don't often check. Hopefully your viewers don't get slugged with excess luggage fees following your advice. That trolley alone looks like it weighs 2kgs, so already almost a 3rd of the limit gone.

We’ve had a lot of comments about the weight of my bag, but we’ve spent nearly 3 years traveling in Europe and have never had our bags weighed! So unfortunately I can’t really speak to that. But I think it’s because our bags are slim and fit the measurements. Plus, since we’re carry-on only, we never have to check in at the airport counter. Sorry we can’t help more, but this is just based on our personal experience over the years!

I travel carry on exclusively but not for six months. My longest trip was only for six weeks but it was half in the northern hemisphere and half in the southern hemisphere so winter and summer. I mostly fly Qantas. They will often weigh your bag (especially if it looks heavy) and make you check if it is overweight. When I’m in America, South Africa, Mexico and Europe I’ve never had my carry on bag weighed. I use a Pakt One which was the collaboration with the Minimalists. It is sized to clearly fit as carryon and being soft sided rarely attracts unwanted attention from check in staff but I do keep it at 7kg.

However, I would have been schlepping home my suitcase and duffle bag if it hadn't been for you. Your video convinced me to bring less clothes by keeping with a color theme. Going with one specific color I was forced to mix and match my outfits which had me looking like I brought more clothes, and I wasn't bored with what I brought. I typically don't bring my blue jean jacket, but this one jacket kept me warm and worked with all my outfits. The packing cubes really helped me keep things orderly. Packing light is problematic because I'm a pretty hefty guy, plus having the burden of constantly doing laundry hanging over my hear kind of spoils a trip. My solution is to not fly within Europe and stick with a small focused geography, so a regular sized suit case isn't such a burden. Some warning about European carriers: many limit a carry on to 20 inches in height, so a 22 inch standard US carry on would be a check-in bag.

I was surprised, too. I do extended trips in Spain, Portugal, and France and I just buy laundry detergent, household items and groceries when I get there. I pack personal care and beauty items because I already own them and usually need to use some them before I have a chance to shop. I plan to do an extended trip to the UK and plan to use the same strategy.

Great video! Firm believer in small carry on luggage. It is so nice not to have to wait for the baggage carousel. People are always amazed that I still have plenty of outfits with such a small amount of clothing. Packing cubes are a lifesaver. I would encourage anyone who really wants to hike the Alps to bring a good backpack- they're expensive here and you'll be miserable- possibly in danger- without one. FYI If a packable backpack is enough, you aren't "hiking," you're "walking." Please don't venture into the mountains with a bag that looks like hers, even at the peak of summer!🙏 (Also, you can get a *much* sturdier shopping bag in your first grocery store in Europe for about a euro and it probably even has shoulder straps and a lifetime trade-in guarantee!👍) Cheers from a traveling American who's been in the Alps for 15 years now. 😁

Thanks for sharing your insights, Shannon! We didn't know there were trade-in guarantees for shopping bags in Switzerland. Does that work for all of the grocery stores here? (Very neat!) As for the backpacks, that's the beauty of packing - everyone can find what truly works best for them! :) We've done loads of day hikes (and short walks too) and this bag has been fantastic and ultra comfortable. But we always encourage travelers to find whatever works best for them and their specific needs!

I just came back from my first international flight ...I watched all the KZbin video's on how to pack a carry on suitcase for 10 days ..the big day arrived and I packed all my clothes for a 10 day trip in my carry on suit case with no problem...problem is the carry on weighed 11kg with just with 3 pair of pants, 7 shirts and underwater, socks for 10 days and one pair of shoes... the airline only allows 7Kg with a carry on...I had to have my carry on checked in anyways...lesson learned..a man can't pack for a ten day trip and keep it all under 7Kg..15lbs... it's better to just pack the same amount of gear...not more...in your larger suitcase since its going to be checked in anyways....with the larger suitcase it's easier to pack...your clothes don't have to be tightly rolled to fit everything in suitcase and you have more flexibility to take a bit more stuff if desired....your suitcase is going to be checked in anyways on a international flight...also a carry on suitcase on the plane in the overhead bin is useless if you need to get at some of your things while in flight..it's better to have a soft shoulder bag with zipper compartments for quick access to your passport, tickets, and other papers for your carry on...a soft shoulder bag can be put in the overhead bin or down by your feet at your seat so you can have access to you stuff while in flight if desired...a carry on suitcase is pretty much useless while in flight...also no need to bring food in your carry on..with my international flight they fed us so much I was never hungry on a 14 hour flight.

I've been travelling 20 years with just 7 kgs carry on and no checked in luggage and I'm female who loves to dress well, as well as bring my full multi step skin care routine and make up...even for trips spanning a few months and encompassing different climates. It does take some planning but not hard or impossible.

@@isleeptillnoon5256 well I tried packing my clothes and the only way I could get below 7kg was to take out my shoes and jeans....which would had only left me with two pair of jeans and the shoes I was wearing for ten days...men's clothes are heavier than women's clothes...for international travel it's just best to take a larger suitcase and check in the suitcase...you might get away with a carry on with domestic flights but not with international flights..every flight I got on weighed my carry on.

Packing can certainly be tricky! We personally never check our bags because we don’t want to have them lost (that’s happened in the past!), and because of the convenience to skip the airport check in lines. We don’t know what our bags weigh, but they hold all of our belongings for the 4-6 months that we travel, so there is extra security having them with us at all times. Also, another tip is to only pack a few outfits and do laundry. If we packed 10 days of clothes, they probably wouldn’t fit either! But we can’t speak to the weight issue because in all of our years of travel we have never had our bags weighed. They have checked the dimensions, but since they look so slim we have never been weighed. Sorry we can’t help more on this!

@@lindaramsey2351 yes you are right..my carry on weighs 7lbs..half of what is allowed for carry on with international flights.. I was able to easily fit clothes in a carry on for a 10 day trip..just weighed to much to carry on...my next international trip will be with a bigger suitcase..might as well take advantage of the extra room for packing if you are going to have to check in anyways.

I would only add one thing that takes up no space but has many uses. A few plastic clothes pins. I've used them for keeping curtains closed, keeping chip bags closed, and hanging laundry, of course. I also bring a small collapsable hanger, mainly for drying something I wash in the sink. Many places have no hangers or the kind that don't come off the bar. OK, that was 2 things! Happy Travels.

I made a small laundry kit in its own bag with cord, 20 wooden clothes pins, 2 S hooks, soap like yours, and a sink stopper. Easy to wash out a few things as needed. It’s smaller than you think. Cuts down trips to the laundromat. I also use my thermal undies as PJs during multi season travel. And an inflatable pillow for anytime you need it. And now I take 2 Covid tests just in case. Re spices. McCormick packages some of their spices in tiny containers with red lids and shaker holes inside. As I emptied them from home, I refilled with my most essential travel items: salt, pepper, Paul Prudhomme’s Meat Magic, basil, oregano. I then found a skinny zippered tube (mine is made to carry tech gadgets, but a cloth pencil tube would work well), and they go in there with two sets of bamboo “cutlery” and 2 pairs of bamboo chopsticks. I travel a lot on business- domestically and internationally - and these have made my meals so much nicer in a hotel mini-suite or Airbnb.

I like your list except I'd make a few tweaks. For one thing, you didn't mention devices, headphones, chargers, power bricks, and adaptors. Those must-haves take up a chunk of space! I take a backpack in addition to my carry on because it fits right over the handle of my suitcase when I'm rolling through the airport, fits under the seat in the airplane as my "personal item", and is useful for day trips at my destination. I put all my electronic doo-dads in that backpack so they're handy on the plane. In my carry on, I pack a fold up duffle bag for bringing home clothing or souvenirs I buy on the trip. I get a free checked bag on my airline, so on the return trip I check my carry on and take the duffle bag on the plane.

Since it doesn’t fit my fashion style I don’t bring it anymore. But I know a LOT of travelers love a good scarf! I do always bring a set of toenail clippers as they will cut through most labels etc. I use them to cut my medication’s with foil packets or plastic tags on clothes. You always seem to break nails on holidays. I never would bring any type of small scissors due to not every country’s allowance in the hand/checked luggage. If you need to scissors any hotel will have them in reception.

I’m curious, what is the total weight of your carry on luggage, as shown in the video? The reason I ask, is that most airlines locally to me, (Australia), have a carry on limit of 7kg (15.4-ish pounds). Oh, and they will check the weight of your bag. I find it very challenging to keep to that weight, particularly when including something like a laptop and or other tech, on top of my essentials, clothes etc. Ultimately, if the whole idea is ‘not’ to check the bag, then I really have to pack like a Spartan, (minus the shield,spear and sword.😉) I have no issues packing what I need in a carry on size bag, but weight is key and I think 7kg is ridiculous, 10kgs (22 pounds) would be perfect.

I am Australian too and wondered about the weight😄. I have managed to do it under the weight limit but had to strictly limit myself to only 14 items of everday clothing for my month long trips. Underwear and pyjamas were extra. And yes, the luggage was weighed at check in and again at the gate!

I'm glad that you mentioned this Rick as I was wondering the same thing about the weight. Maybe it is just us Australians that worry about the weight. 7 kg is doable and you are allowed to have another bag 40x30x10cm which is a small backpack to hold a laptop but it has to be able to go under the seat in front of you. Korean used to do 12kg which was great. I only travel with carry on.
