Being flight-attendant for the major german airline for 33 years I can approve most of the tips. Loose but not too long clothing, flexible waistband for trousers or skirts because the body will swell caused by lower air-pressure. Same applies for shoes - a loose fit will give room for swelling. Support stockings (light version from ALDI f.ex.) can also help. ...and even on a holiday-trip a decent outfit will make your day.

Not just body fluids on the floors but poop. Numerous studies indicate 90%+ shoes have poop, coliforms, and E. coli bacteria on them. As a retired Army pilot (fast Army Ranger roller) and wife to a retired airline pilot (DFW), I dress for safety (evacuation) with jeans/long pants, a comfortable top, a zip hoody, and absolutely nothing poly-anything (it melts to your skin in heat, not just flames). Great topic.

M. Anderson you are correct. I flew this spring in a charcoal grey athletic jacket without a hood. Was very comfortable traveling with out a hooded jacket. Also, survivors of plane crashes have said that it is best to wear natural fabrics while flying. If there is a disaster where there are flames, polyester could melt onto your skin.

TSA gives me so much anxiety but I prefer wearing my sneakers as they give me good support and stability...I just loosen my laces as soon as I get past the ID/pass check so I can slip them off easily...then I go find a bench where I can sit to put my shoes back on which gives me a couple minutes to catch my breath and bring myself back down off the ledge.

I bought footies at Dollar Tree . They are 3 pairs for a dollar. I keep them in an outside pocket of my suit case. When I get to security, I simultaneously take off my sandals or shoes and slip on the footies to walk through. Then I take them off, put on my shoes and put them inside out in the suitcase. You could throw them away since they're so cheap.🙂

As well, I also like to wear functional coverage on the plane in case of emergency evacuation. Years ago at my airport the plane went off the runway, in a snowstorm, in Canada, at 1 am on a Sunday morning! No one was injured, than God, but people had to evacuate. As the flight was coming for the Caribbean, people were in shorts and flipflops. They had to wait on the tarmac in that snowstorm til enough vehicles could get through security to pick everyone up, at 1 am! Since then I always traveled with sensible shoes, long pants, long sleeves/layers. If down south, I just take them in my carry on to change into throughout the flight.

I traveled extensively for my career starting in the 80's and after years of massive luggage, and literal fashion shows all over I downsized for myself to a basic all black wardrobe...always looks chic, practical and doesn't show all spots when dry cleaning can be an impossible task with travel dates and times loming. for my own comfort I opted for a cashmere sweater, 10 months out of the year it is perfect in the plane whether I put t-shirts, shirts or even another sweater over it, it is my basic with a pair of black jeans or a new pair of dark blue jeans (501's, the classic) and the blue adds a color to the wardrobe that can be drab if you can't get home for a month...it is a clean look, less hassle choosing, ultra comfortable and simple, don't forget the dark sunglasses for sleeping or early morning arrival if you had a noisy flight or turbulence.

I was a flight student for 20 years. Very good advice. From a safety point of view Cotton, linen or light weight wool or cashmere keep you safe. Other fabrics will cause a burning sensation or even a brush burn when trying to get out of the window seat. The natural fabrics keep you warm when cold and cool when hot, they breath keeping you from sweating. Small rolled cotton sheet works well as a blanket. If you travel frequently keeping a travel bag stocked with things you use daily deodorant, face wipes, electric tooth brush or toothbrush toothpaste, etc. Always packed in your travel carry-on. No worries about forgetting something. Replinsh as needed. Always wear slip on/off closed-in shoes.

Hey there, Laurie! Love your videos! Even though I've been flying since I was a toddler, I find your tips to be super helpful! One of my travel-day outfit rules is to wear comfortable clothes, particularly fabric that has stretch in them. Whether you're cramming yourself into that tiny airplane seat, that even tinier airplane bathroom, or running to the gate, stretchy fabrics will be your friend! As will pockets! I do, however, wear scarves/shawls on travel days. They're super portable and great for cold airplanes. But don't take them into the lavatory!

Regarding the shorts and short dresses: it is just gross. Those seats, airport and airplane DO NOT get cleaned often as through as you mentioned. You sit on days of people's sweat, saliva from cough, sneeze, drools, snorts... people sit on the floor and then back at the seats. They put their feet, without or without the shoes, on the seat. Bring back residues from their bodily fluids from bathrooms in their clothing... people change baby diapers and throw up in the seats!!! And THEN all of those germs stick to you and may go inside you as well. NO short SHORTS or Short dresses is my advice as a Flight Attendant!!

If it’s winter I just replace the tank/t-shirt with a long sleeve tee and add a lightweight puffer that I can roll up and place in my carry-on. My go to airplane outfit for international flights is a black jogging suit, a cute chic tshirt underneath, and a denim jacket on top. I also always do compression socks, slip on sneakers (I like bensimon) and if you're easily overstimulated like me, I also really like wearing a baseball cap! It's all super casual but still intentional. I don't wear foundation but if you want to go light nut still look put together I recommend doing your eyebrows and a tinted lip balm. It's amazing how much of a difference it makes. I also love the double sock trick!

All of your videos have been helpful for me. Today's video was awesome. I am a frequent flyer and have been lucky to have no wardrobe disasters. I've had TSA pre check about 6 years (I just renewed it) which helps lower my stress level. My challenge has always been flying from a cold rainy climate (Pacific Northwest) to a hot humid climate where my elderly mother lives. There is often a 40-60 degree temperature difference between the two places and a layover that can be either hot or cold. My cropped boyfriend jeans or cropped flowy pants work well because they're not too hot or clingy, and I have to layer a hooded sweater or jacket over a nice t-shirt or camisole. I wear nice platform sneakers in the summer and ankle boots in the Fall.

Just found your channel-good tips for people who have not flown much or ever. I’ve traveled since I was a small child, so of course I have seen the whole transition of people dressing nicely to fly, to people practically wearing a bathing suit! I encourage everyone to get approved and purchase a TSA pass. It can save so much time standing in line to get through the checkpoint. I’ll never forget a security check situation perhaps 20 years ago…probably before 9/11. A sharp dressed older couple was immediately in front of me. We had put our carryon bags, purses, etc. on the conveyor belt. Each time the woman went through the X-ray machine it would buzz. She had so many pieces of jewelry on, it looked like she had emptied her jewelry box. She would take a couple of things off and attempt to go through again and again. Meanwhile everyone behind them in line are getting upset.

I always advise people to open airplane meals, desserts etc with them positioned so that the opening is away from you. So, for example, when we open a yogurt at home, we usually have the tab near us and peel it away from us. However on the plane, but the meal we get at altitude - where the air pressure is lower than the air pressure at ground level when the food was packed and sealed - wants to burst out of the container, which increases the chance of it kinda spitting out onto your shirt. So to prevent that, I turn the container so the pull-tab is on the side away from me and I *very carefully* peel the tab towards me so that my hand is between me and the possibly-spurting food. It's easier to wash my hand than my shirt. This might be difficult, but another useful video (with few opportunities for product links, unfortunately) is to show people the tricks to eating airplane meals. I'm not talking about how to get the best food or be served earlier (although some people will want to hear that too), but, well, I guess you've noticed how some people have so much trouble handling all the stuff on the tray. There are so many ways to make the process easier and if I had a channel, I'd make that video. I'd cover how to open lids to create less mess on the meal try...remove lids flat and place them under the main meal tray, or fold relatively neatly into a long thin strip that tucks between the main meal container and heavier portions (like the dessert or fruit). I'd talk about eating mechanics affecting meal selection, not just taste preference. I never choose chocolate mousse cos it's super dangerous for my shirt. Either try to choose a meal that is likely to be eatable (edible?) with just a fork or spoon, or if you select a meal that requires cutting up, like meat or omelette, lean forward and cut it all at once, like a kid's meal, and then put the knife flat beside the main (NOT in the main dish where it can easily be flicked out) and eat the meal with just your fork...to save your elbow room that just not there. Don't open everything up at once. eat the meal, then put scraps wrappers etc in the meal container and use the metal lid to seal those scraps away so you aren't juggling lots of loose bits that fall off the tray while you're trying to eat dessert/salad/fruit. I mean, eat in whatever order you want, just don't try to have it all open at once on the tray because - in the end that is actually more prone to meal fails like stuff dropping off the table. This is already too long and I'm only halfway thru stuff I can say.

I live on a ranch and run around in flip flops most of the time. Feet wash! I carry antibacterial wipes in my personal bag. I have since they started selling them. Before TSA precheck I would sit and wipe my feet before slipping flip flops or sandals back on. I’m not a big germaphobe unless I’m in a bathroom. I don’t wear white at all!! Dirt and stains magically appear when I wear white!! My sister on the other hand will stay perfectly clean even when we travel!! Not fair!! If I’m on a short flight I will wear a maxi dress. I wear the duster cardigans and remove the belts. I have never used them. I take it off before I sit and wear it backwards when I get cold. Also if it has a hood you can flip it over your face when you sleep. That way no one sees you drool!! 😂😂

I love your videos and they have been of great help to me on my recent trips. I flew by myself dozens of times as a child, but not so much now. Anyway, a tip I always remember is that you should avoid wearing synthetic fabrics when you fly. In the extremely rare instance that there is a fire, synthetic fibers tend to melt and stick to the skin, where natural fibers are more likely to burn and fall away from the body. Sorry if it was morbid, but it is the one tip I always follow.

Because of many of the things you have mentioned, I always wear a pair of jeans or chinos in grey or blue (black picks up lint and shoes stains), a comfortable crew neck (or mock turtleneck) shirt, and a mock leather jacket that fits right at the hip. The mock leather (or even leather itself) is easy to wipe off (as opposed to a fabric like wool or something not easily washable). And I wear tennis shoes with elastic laces that I can easily slip in and out of when going through security. I also do not wear any jewelry going through security. The outfit is simple, easy and looks nice, and most of all and I am in and out of security in a very short time.

When I go through the TSA line, as I'm putting my bag of liquids, bag of snacks, laptop, etc in the bins, I grab one bag of airport sox and quickly slip them on as I take off my shoes. When I exit the line, I go to a bench or chair to repack my bag, toss my airport sox back in their bag, and off I go. I take two different color slipper socks, so I know which ones I used on my flight out. That way, I know I have a clean pair to use on my return flight. Everything gets washed when I get home. As for my travel outfit... Capri or full length jeans, t-shirt, and tennis shoes with good arch support. Easy and comfy. 👍🏼

Yes easy and comfy! You could also just wash those sox for the return trip.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie if I have access to a laundry service or a laundry room, yes - absolutely. Most trips, though, I'm no where near a laundry room. I tend to go "off the grid" on my trips. 😉

What are slipper socks? Went to a store recently and lady who worked there had no idea what "slipper socks" are. Walked to where they have slippers and many slippers but NO slipper socks.

@@suzannelawson9215 How odd! They're those socks with little rubber pads on the bottom--maybe also called "non-slip" socks? There are also slipper socks that have two layers--maybe soft fleece inside and knitted material outside. I see them everywhere. They might be a little harder to find in summer, though.

I’ve done a lot of traveling within the US borders. My go-to airplane outfit is full length leggings, a t-shirt (depending of how I feel, one that fits or an oversized one), a cardigan with pockets and sneakers. No jewelry, except a copper bracelet of which I glued the latch because it kept falling off (I know I’ll always get checked for that one). Also, one thing I discovered. I wear glasses and I packed a pair in their case and put in my carryon. The case is leather covering metal and it is oval shaped (almost round) in the circumference. It got a lot of attention at the TSA check. The only time I’ve had my luggage physically checked. I no longer travel with that glasses case.

When I travel I stick to basic black so I only need to match one color, shoes, under garments, jacket etc. I always travel in a dress and slip on shoes. I have a day bag that I take everywhere. On the plane it has one meal, because airport food is unhealthy, my ticket, room for water and my tidying up gear, soap, toothbrush, deodorant, change of undergarments, travel towel. I prefer to make long flights at night. When I wake up I use the lav to take a quick sponge bath then I have one tired day before I quickly adapt to the new time zone. The day bag then becomes a grocery/water/necessities bag. My small crossover is a purse. I never travel wearing jewelry. I make sure my cloths are easily dried hanging in the shower and find a local laundry. Every 4 days I wash one dark load, hang it up dry on a portable wash line so I only carry enough clothing for 5 days. This way I can travel for a month with just a carryon. I don’t bring laundry detergent. I buy that. But I do bring a shampoo bar and a leave in conditioner because I have curly hair and I don’t use chemicals on it. Everything else is in 3oz containers that I refill on long trips. If I’m really good people assume I’m broke when they look at me - no designer logos, no expensive accessories, no jewelry, no labels that they would recognize. The one logo that does show is never on tv so no one knows it - it is my all time favorite carryon that I paid a fortune for one year for my birthday! In this way I have traveled the world solo with no issues. One final note; I look up the area where I’m going on my cell phone map before I leave. Then when I get really lost that map is still in my phone even when I have no WiFi.

You rarely mention pockets when talking of packing or now when talking of what to wear. Here you talk of putting your ticket etc. in a cardigan pocket. I try to avoid putting anything in a jacket pocket, bag, or anything that can be snatched off me. I always make sure I have jeans with deep pockets, and I keep ID, ticket and phone as near to my person as possible in them. At best, you always have these things ready to show immediately. In the worst case scenario, this makes identification more straightforward, helps prevent theft, and if your bag does get stolen or lost, avoids the hassle of getting replacement ID, etc. This all applies when you are walking about strange cities.

Ever since my first trip to Europe and was warned about pickpockets, I have worn/used a runners wrist wallet. It holds my ID, $$, and credit cards on my person. And the zipper does not make any bells go off when going thru security, yay!

What do you do with your valuables (wallet/ID) if you use the airplane restroom? Are you concerned with the passenger next to you rummaging through your under seat bag?

I usually wear really soft mid rise skinny jeans, a tank top, a hoodie, either sneakers or ankle boots. I usually just advise people to wear soft, comfortable, slightly form-fitting clothing. You want to take up as less space as possible and that includes your clothing. I also bring my weighted lap blanket. It's about 3lbs and marshmallow soft and about the size of a baby blanket. It's so soft and warm and the weight adds to the comfort.

Baseball caps are nice to block the light and air and also give some coverage for you hair if the cleanliness of the seats are in question. A zip up jacket with a hood helps too. A pair of clean socks and a plastic bag to tie up smelly little boys shoes or socks is a must when traveling with kids. Wet wipes to clean everything!

Laurie, so glad to have found your channel right before flying to Europe for the first time. I never wear jeans in the airport because the thickly welted seam in the crouch (sorry!) goes red on the screen, and someone must explore the area for whatever they're looking for. Ugh.

I dearly love your videos- loads of valuable content! I scheduled my flight for my upcoming trip & of course, since I haven’t flown I awhile, scrolled through your videos to catch up on tsa & airline updates. I was excited to fly- but decided that the risk of spirit airlines canceling wasn’t going to be worth chancing- I’m flying for business this time, so driving it’ll be. Looking forward to my next flight & will keep watching your fantastic videos in the meantime!

I use the old socks trick, except I fold them inside out and put them in my carryon once I'm through. I wash them when I get to my destination. I also bring a pair of washable slippers and change into them before I get in line at security. They speed things up. I also use them on long haul flights.
