At first I was having problems connecting to it via Mission Planner, as the com port wouldn't come up. Then realized Windows didn't install the drivers correctly for whatever reason. Re-downloaded the drivers and it works now. Thanks for the video, was helpful!

This is a great video. After I restored the defaults and got the 3DR radio connected to APM on my Mac and the X8+, I got the 417 params downloaded and Load Settings STATUS: SUCCESS and on Ground Control side on telemetry I see solid Green. YAY! But when I Copy Required Items to Remote, nothing happens and on the remote craft side it is still flashing red.

I am on a Mac. SO I have now been able to get green on both ground station side green and and the craft, but in doing so, it seems to have deleted the port settings to connect directly from the computer to the craft, so since I got telemetry working, the settings used previously to connect from the PC to the craft are gone. No idea how to recover them. It says its connected but now never provides any Flight data in APM that previously, so what I think is I need to recover the port settings for direct connect to the craft.

If you are using the same ones as I did, then these are very old technology now. See more up to date videos for modern options. It'll probably be a driver issue so I would contact the seller for a manual and help. Best of luck

Powering ANY transmission circuitry/power system without the antenna attached will have a high probability that the transmitter will be damaged. I'd try and update firmware and confirm the 'magic number' is the same on both radios and if it still doesn't work then you've smoked one.. Best of luck!

Thanks for the videos. I will try and check out the wire connections and see if I have to reverse the tx and rx wires. If not I guess it might be a firmware update. If both the air and ground radio have usb plugs, can I update them via USB or do I need the ftdi bridge?

Ok so using the Sik radio configuration app i was able to communicate both radios. The red LED was flashing in both units. The issue is with mission planner that will not send the command via the telemetry radio. Any ideas what to look for on the parameter list? thanks for all the help provided.

I've not used that here. There are two main options - use dedicated telemetry radios like this or use some other RC control system that embeds MAVlink into the downloaded telemetry...

Currently I am using a 3DR PX4 with both 3DR radio link and minim OSD (one output for each on PX4) so I get live OSD on my Tx mounted Hudl. Thanks for the positive feedback! I've tried a few OTG cables on my Samsung tablet and sadly the Samsung I have doesn't provide power (+5V) out of the OTG cable so the radio can't power up. I believe that some other tablets do provide power so thet should work.. Let me know how you get on..

Hi... I seem to have found something odd with the Pixhawk, MP, and the 3DR Radio.... I followed your instruction, and plugged the newly updated 3DR into the Pixhawk Telem 1 port... No heartbeat. So I started testing things and here is what I found:On the pixhawk, there are 2 telem ports, and if you go into MP under Full Parameter List you see the 2 telem ports list as:Telem1 SERIAL1Telem2 SERIAL2Could these be backwards?I tested this by setting both ports to 9 (9600) since nothing works with that much anymore.My 3dr radio did not work in either telem1 or telem2 as expected.If I set SERIAL1_BAUD to 57 and SERIAL2_BAUD to 9My 3dr works in TELEM2 port but not telem1 port.If I set SERIAL1_BAUD to 9 and SERIAL2_BAUD to 57My 3dr works in Telem1port but not in Telem2 port.You must Reboot the board before the new values take effect.Let me know what you think.... Is this something I should report, or is it a known issue already. I am fine since I got everything working.... But there is a lot of people having problems with this if you check the forums, and no one seems to have noticed this. Maybe it is my Pixhawk from China, but everything else is working fine. I've got a question. I can't get my radios to work after I soldered in the osd. They were working fine when I benched tested them on an APM 2.8. But when I installed them into the APM 3.1 and soldered in the OSD all I get is "no heartbeat packets received". I've redone the solder connections twice. I'm positive my solder connections are good and I know the radios work because I bench tested them on an APM 2.8. But I can't get them to talk plugged into the APM 3.1. Also, I get the solid green light when both are plugged in. When I click "load settings" all the radio information on both sides comes up. So that tells me they are communicating. I have the baud rate set at 57600. You have any idea what my problem could be?

I got the remote on the quad blinking. Which tells me that's it's now receiving packets. I had to install the Arduplane firmware instead of the Arducopter. I think the problem may be it's not able to transfer the parameters over the link to the remote. I may need to get an FTDI and hook the remote up to the usb to install the firmware to it.

I just had a brainfart. I did not hook an ftdi up to the minimosd to set the correct firmware for the flight controller. I still think I need to do the same with the telemetry radio as well. I think maybe when I perform both of those steps everything will work just fine.........least I hope. I'll keep you updated.

I’m currently more a MultiWii guy and followed all your videos including Bluetooth connecting and I wonder why the MAVlink modules requires FW and protocol (between each side and its radio not the PC and the FC board which is obvious (AT?)) and cannot just emulate UART like the Bluetooth module dose. I have an idea for you for a video; connecting ESP8266 Serial WIFI Wireless Transceiver Module to MultiWii. The WIFI supports much longer distance than the Bluetooth.

Hi, the radios act as a virtual USB cable and are using firmware/software to encode the 57K USB data stream and perform error correction at each end. In theory this should work with our friend the Multiwii too.. Thanks for the suggestion for the video - Happy flying!

Maybe I’ve got the wrong impression from here: copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/common-using-the-3dr-radio-for-telemetry-with-apm-and-px4/ that the radio should be accessed with some AT commands on a regular basis. Looking a bit deeper, maybe it can be programed once and do act as a regular wireless UART that can fit MultiWii.

Hi there, hope you are well. I have put together a 450 quad with APM 2.6, 900 Mhz telemetry and Minim OSD using your tutorials and all works beautifully. I have one minor issue tho which is - when the telemetry is not connected (to the PC), the GPS doesn't seem to initialise and no matter how long I wait, it never shows on the OSD. I have spent quite some time researching this without any luck. Would you have any thoughts on the matter? Regards, Peter.

+Peter Hegarty Are you not getting power to the GPS? If not then the power to it may need to checked. J1 would be a place to start and see if you can see the positive voltage on the GSP connection with and without the USB plugged in.. Best of luck..

I'm using the telemetry (wireless) not usb, but until APM planner is connected via wireless, the GPS won't show up, as soon as I do connect, away she goes. I wonder if we can control the drone motion (i.e. throttle and servos) using the telemetry kit and some software on a laptop; with a joystick connected to it.. so we eleminate the need for the trasmitter and receiver and extend the range of flight.. crazy right?!!

Hi... I just received my 3DR telemetry V2 from ebay. I have APM2.8 so I have to change the connector going into the APM2.8 side. Matched the RX to TX and TX to RX in the APM connector. When I fired up my drone and also pluged in my second radio into laptop, All I got was only solid green light. No second blinking light. Under Mission planner, I kept getting " Failed to enter command mode" when loading settings. I have changed the baud rate to 57600 and still error. Flipped the rx/tx in the APM connector and no help. Any other idea?

Guess what I search the internet for telemetry transmission system (I have the clone version) FTDI cable, and there is nothing. Do you know if FTDI cables don't matter, so I can buy any FTDI cable? Need some help. Not sure what i'm missing, but i cant get it to connect to planner at all. The green led goes solid on both ends, but i cant seem to get flashing red (heartbeat ?) ? I can connect to both ends on planner (sik radio) while usb is in usb and air is connected via ftdi adapter. Can read the settings on both. Flashed local, but it still wont connect. Checked and rechecked tx/rx wiring, baud settings, etc... Help ?

Cable is good. It was a case of "fear of specialist" :D First time aster reflash didnt work. Kicked it off my table, all angry, retried a bit later and it connected. No idea why. Ghost in the machine, etc...

Steve Hobson hi Steve, if you are using the compass to maintain the heading check for interference from the power lines. If not then use trim to remove the drift - the APM may see them middle throttle position as slightly to one side.. Best of luck..

That's normally talking about FPV systems. These radios use a much lower frequency with a lot more 'punch' and penetrating power than FPV transmissions so it's less of a problem. Happy flying!

What about using a lightweight 433mHz Sander style antenna from a ezUHF rx? Hopefully this isn't too outside the scope of your APM 3.1 series, but what is the difference compared to the Mini APM Pro? A video is planned. Following the other MinimOSD videos on the channel and the pinouts from the APM guide online it should be relatively straightforward. Only issue is finding the cleanest, mot useful OSD firmware for the MinimOSD.. Let me know if you attempt it and how you get on..

Painless360 Hi, thank you very much for the APM series, all of them are very informative and really helped me having confidence on steps I am following in my builds. I plan to use MinimOSD and MAVlink radio with APM mini 3.1. Is it possible to connect them both on the same telemetry port? Is it just a Y cable splitting or there is something more complex needed in between?

The APM 3.1 is the 'mini' APM. I wouldn't use the APM now, it's VERY out of date. See my more recent builds..

If the radios are talking to each other then you can change things over the connected wireless link. The latest version of these radios (V2) have USB connectors on them to avoid the hassle. Best of luck!

+Painless360 Hey, so far im able to set up connection between the ground module and the air module, but, when I go to flight data tab and click on connect( baud rate of 57K) a pop up comes up and says done and the next thing that happens is my PC restarts! at first I thought its the USB port, I changed the ports and tried but its the same! My damn PC restarts! Any Idea? the PC runs on win 7 32bit OS

Sound like a basic driver problem. I'd delete the device in device manager and try again. Best of luck!

+Painless360 hey man, Thanks a ton! It worked! one of my other APM 2.6 shows Bad compass health, and im unable to calibrate the compass. the live calibration tab displays error 99 message and 0 samples are being taken! Do you think the compass is fried?

Love this video. Worked first time for me but now they constantly blink green lights and can’t find each other. I’ve tried downloading older drivers & also tried windows driver reassignment but nothing works anymore. The info for one plugged into the pc always comes up but not on the one hooked up to the rover. Just can’t get them to have solid green lights anymore. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I tried to update firmware on my Air radio and there after it stopped connecting to ground module and the red and green LEDs are blinking continously. Sri Harsha the link light should be solid to show a link. I would re flash separately and confirm channel numbers and check for breaks in the antenna and soldering. Best of luck!
