This game's graphics are pretty elaborate for what it is and seem more like a stylistic choice rather than the limitations of developer's artistic means. In other words, if your cornea is getting burned out by the flashing of colorful pixels, it's by design. But on the more broad point, I find that the more developers focus on graphical fidelity, the more they have to compromise on the complexity of their game design. It's sort of like how Rimworld has Dwarf Fortress's DNA all over it, it's more approachable for an average gamer, but has significantly less complexity than the game that had ASCII characters for graphics. When you have 50,000 different mechanics it becomes costly and time consuming to illustrate everything. So you either trim the fat, or give up and let the user's imagination paint a pretty picture based on the abstractions you give them.

This is true, and it is the reason most (99%) people will continue to prefer games with some kind of graphic as opposed to pure text, as it can tend to deal irl psychic damage after a while or right away depending on how atrocious the interface is.

Path of Achra is one of the simplest and most complicated games i've ever seen ever since factorio. You should try it. And after you'll do a few runs, you'll understand why the graphics are this simple, cause some builds closer to endgame will unlock lag.(i made a superjuiced lightspeed demigod chud on hit proc build that does a couple thousand hits per turn) Point is the game is good. Very much so.

14:00 Yeah, old-school graphics could use a bit of post processing like Qud or Balatro. Programmers can still just apply their programmer art but add some eye candy and particles to the fat sprites. It's what I'm intending in my games that I'm procrastinating on.

I'm literally here because I need someone else to be confused with me. I watched the original a couple times now and, as a massive roguelike/lite fan, I'm determined to play this at some point but... For once, I'm not sure I'm autistic enough. A traditional RL on hyper speed with massively in-depth builds? Do I need to snort Adderall to even begin to formulate a useful strategy??? I'm genuinely puzzled how a HUMAN BEING coded this game, and more than a little bit scared.

It definitely fucks me over most of the time, but I have several games I love the hell out of without ever really knowing EXACTLY what I'm doing. I have like 500 hours in Dredmor and I've never gotten close to finishing a run before dying to something dumb.
