Norway's a fun study in this sort of subject: Our kings were for the most part seen as responsible for disasters *before* the Christening. In Ynglingasaga there's a king called Dómaldi who was sacrificed by bloð* due to bad crops. This was regarded as an ultimate sacrifice, as they had tried sacrificing several other animals before then. Worth remarking is how everything went back to normal in the following crop cycle. *(we presume bloð means to cut their throat on a sacrificial stone and bleed them, and then do rituals with that blood)

I want to point out that a big part of ancient Chinese mythology was also a Great Flood, but the cause usually was not said to be supernatural. And the mythical Emperor Yu built dams to stop the floods, founding the Xia dynasty. This mythos is seen as a testament to civilization conquering and regulating nature.

This is so good. We keep getting inundated with heroism, partly because of the culture we come from, and partly because it takes responsibility away from us. At a time when we need to make organizations that well and truly function for the benefit of all mankind, we sit here hoping some billionaire, or some other person will come and assist us in beating global warming, or beat social justice issues. The more we shy away from fact based thinking the more we lose our way and waddle around as we hit extinction level events day after day and year after year...

When the original viking settlers of Iceland debated if they should take up Christianity a volcanic eruption brought streams of lava that threatened one of the Christian settlers, and the heathen majority saw this as a sign that the gods were angry at the Christians. On that occasion one of the wiser leaders asked a surprisingly profound question to the crowd standing in the lava fields of Þingvellir the viking parliament of Iceland: What made the gods angry when the lava flowed over this [holy] place we stand on right now? It is a strikingly simple question but it show a deep scientific understanding, that all lava fields must have been originally made through volcanic eruption, and this process is frequent and random enough for it to be nonsensical to attribute it to a godly will.
