The BTS of Mel Gibson creating the intricate layers of the Mayan society is so good; the outcasts, the laborers, craftsman, all the way up to the high society women who are even looking down on the poorer people around them. It's so well done.

Mel Gibson blames plague, deforestation and inter-tribe violence on the destruction of the native Amerindians. As opposed to the Christian conquistadors. Read 'A Peoples History of the United States.'

I absolutely love this movie I’ve commented so many times about this film and you’re finally watching it. I personally think this is one of the few movies you can actually call a masterpiece your hooked from start to finish, and jaguar paw had my anxiety shot I NEEDED him to make it back to his wife and kid lol. The best part if the call back to the beginning I loved he used the same trap they use to hunt with.

I don’t particularly like Mel Gibson as a person and I abhor his politics, but I have to say I respect his artistry. It’s very important to always remember than all of his “historical” movies are not entirely accurate and heavily fictionalized. But the dude knows how to tell a good story and tell it well!

You should watch Hacksaw Ridge. Another movie by Mel Gibson and is about private Doss that served in WW2. It's based on a true story, and they couldn't put most of what Doss did on screen due to how it would look unrealistic, but he indeed did more than the human mind and spirit could ever accomplish. All of his accomplishments were never numbered correctly in that war because of how much he did. He then went to serve in the army further. He truly was an angel set on earth. Brilliant movie with superb acting, cinematography and is an emotional roller coaster

Human sacrifice in the pre-Columbian world was a religious practice performed in the context of certain cults of the indigenous peoples of America. This practice was prohibited by the Spaniards a few years after their arrival in America. A great diversity of documents and stories are corroborated by abundant archaeological and historical evidence. Archaeology since the 20th century provides clear evidence of its widespread practice in Mesoamerica.

35:00 Please don't watch Mel Gibson films and take it as historically accurate (Brave Heart, Apocalypto, The Patriot, etc.), cause it's very inaccurate. Just take it as a reference point if your interested in the history. Take it as a good movie with some historical elements. For example, the classic Mayan civilization collapse was around 900 AD and the first European explorers to the Caribbean was 1490's. That's 600 years apart the film is trying to put together.

If you're interested in a very in depth history of civilization, from when we were apes to now, I would recommend Jared Diamond's book "Guns, Germs, and Steel". It explains why and how Europeans colonized (conquered) the Americas, and why it wasn't the other way around.

@@xavierharris9065 In Hispanic history, they conquered them as an elite, but most of todays Latin culture is a blend of native and hispanic elements just as much in history is. Look at Europe, a blend of Roman, native cultures, etc same can be said with Japan, native Jomon plus Chinese influences etc... In North America, natives and europeans did not mix nor interracted so today America is completely European culturally with almost nothing native american in their culture.

Now the movie is inaccurate in its depiction of Mayans civilizations as these barbaric blood thirsty uncivilized people. They did have sacrifices but it was not captives. They didn’t want to sacrifice people they views as enemies because they found it offensive to their “god” so they sacrifice royal descendants and people who volunteered either through devotion or because of illness. But it was almost always people who were part of the tribe and of royal blood. That being said it does have some accuracy’s like the ants being used to close wounds that’s real, the Mayans being big on worshipping the sun and moon. Some weapons like the obsidian knifes, etc.
@tonysoto8949
@tonysoto8949 2 ай бұрын
This movie is misleading because by the time Hernan Cortes arrived in the Vera Cruz area of Mexico the Mayans we’re no longer an actual civilization, there were only small tribes scattered around southern Mexico along with other smaller tribes like the Tlaxcala , Zapotec, and several others who with the remaining Mayan tribes fought against the existing empire of the Aztecs. The Aztec empire actually we’re the ones who ruled all of Mexico and would capture other tribe members for sacrifice to their Gods Huitzilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl, etc
