It's interesting because Graeme fro. Stable Horse Training does exactly that to introduce the concept of being ridden to younger/in-training horses, by taking his trusty mare Lena (who's the boss of the stable) around the horses being trained in the arena. Bella was being silly and rolling around because it's the first time she sees such a thing, but having her play rather than spook at the added height of a human on Apollo's back is, in my opinion, a really good start!

Lots of experiences now for Bella will pay off sooner or later. Jumps, lunging, balls acting as feet in stirrups, etc., all contribute to her upbringing and prepare her for riding. Besides, she's intelligent and needs stimulation, new things and time to accept them. Keeping a horse in a stall or pasture and suddenly trying to ride with very little introduction is begging for trouble. Bella's already way ahead in her experiences. Good job!

Hi Genie, Wanted to ask you if you know of Tara's newsletter from March, 2022 regarding Steve -- I asked in my comments on this video how Steve is doing, ( I knew earlier he had been sick and I had been thinking of him) and she told me in my comment that she had sent out this newsletter ! I don't know how to find this newsletter - I looked under the various headers here like community, channels, etcetera but did not find any newsletters. I use a tablet for all the internet work, and maybe I need a full pc to view any newsletters. Very interesting. At first Bella seemed more interested in playing with Apollo but he knew his job and I suspect his message to her was "I am busy with very important work to do. You should pay attention!" And when you stopped in the menage and Bella came up to you, she really did check you and the saddle etc. out. I think that finally got her attention to the fact you were riding Apollo. After that she was more attentive - at times trotting or walking parallel to you. Really a good experience for Bella and of course, Apollo did his job well. He is a star.

excellent exercise! so many people forget the importance of teaching a horse that's it's ok to have a human be "taller" than them. you are definitely herd leader but so is Apollo. Bella seemed quite anxious at first, cutting Apollo off, nipping at him but upon not getting his usual reactions showing some stress behaviors. she seemed to start putting 2 and 2 together when you greeted her and let her have a good long sniff of both you and apollo. she's one smart cookie; the penny will drop but this is definitely an exercise worth repeating. maybe do it on farouk also. you're the best. I am always impressed with your training skills, and Rens' amera work and calm voice. ❤

I came by your site by chance and i am so glad that i did. Your are a wonderful horse woman. You take very good care of your horses and they are just so cute and beautiful. They are a credit to you and your husband. I am slowly catching up on the rest of your video's. It is so nice to see 3 healthy looking horses and hearing them making noises. One word: BRILLIANT! It never occurred to me to do this, and it was pivotal to Bella's perception of the world! She was WITH you and Apollo, she saw from her left eye, and her right eye. You were in front of her, behind her, on her left side and right, still, standing, walking, trotting, passing diagonal, you and Apollo were doing complex movements she had not been "a part of" before, all under saddle. Bella's an observant SMART GIRL, this opened up a whole new world in her brain. A wonder it never once in my long life passed through my feeble brain! I won't ever forget it (and neither will Bella), wonderful!

That was a really good exercise and by the end Bella was copying what Apollo was doing…particularly the couple of back steps she did. It’s lovely to see her being allowed to be a baby and learn gently. She did make me laugh though especially that roll 😂 I laughed so loud my little dog came running in from outside to check I was ok. What she reminded me of was one day many years ago when chocolate inspector made an unscheduled visit to the school I was teaching in and he decided to come in my room. I had 5 to 7 year olds and a little Chinese boy who had recently joined us and who couldn’t speak any English. It was a very busy class and the inspector was as,in me question after question…all the while the little Chinese boy was tugging at my sleeve and I tried to show him I needed him to be patient. Anyway I suddenly became aware of him jumping up and down that’s when I realised the watch someone had given me for safekeeping which had been on my desk was now on the floor and he was jumping up and down on the watch. It was a look at me moment …which is why I laughed out loud at Bella rolling on her back. They are just like children 😂

That was gorgeous to watch. Bella is such a little character. She loved playing with Tara and Apollo! But I think it was going in just the same. Thanks for another interesting blog. It was so lovely to see Apollo & Bella staring in the same blog together. Maybe Bella might also learn how to behave under saddle if you were to ride Apollo again but this time to lead bella around on lead rope next to Apollo. Just an idea as I have found riding & leading young horses does make the young horse how to behave and works rather good.
