I watched the video from two years ago where Apollo needed to be re-shod -- only one week after a really bad shoe/hack job... So, I'm wondering, in the amount of time between THIS shoeing and that re-shoeing, what went wrong?? Did Apollo have a bunch of different inexperienced farriers that led to the problems on this day?? I'm wondering why this issue wasn't discovered, at the last couple of shoeings, assuming Apollo gets shod "every 8 to 10 weeks," as you've said.... Has there been any vet visits and x-rays since he's had problems continually?? It may be an issue that shoeing can't fix... He works pretty hard, so I'm thinking arthritis or something really serious may be right around the corner... But, I hope that's not the case.

That frequency is pretty routine, I think. Hooves never stop growing and need regular maintenance. And according to his rescue video, the problem with his soles will take a lot of time and patience to resolve.

I understood that you hold this farrier in high regard and I found nothing in his work that troubled me but for how far back from the front of the hoof wall the shoe was placed - like it was too small and the shoe wasn't supporting the front of the hoof wall but more on the sole - not where shoes normally go. Does he have a reason for this? I loved his treatment of the horse and Apollo doesn't appear unhappy with his work.
@allangreenley99012 жыл бұрын
You are correct the shoe was too far back.. How u can tell is because he couldn't use the outside toe nail because he was over the line. And them feet are soft mushy not one nail drove into good hoof the nails hardly tightened in the shoe holes. A fair job but nothing brilliant . No toe clip on him to stabilize the shoe .

He's feet seemed fine at face value, but he seemed a little sore. So we took X-rays and discovered his toe was starting to shift downward (very slightly) and that he needed corrective farrier work. That's why the farrier is cutting his toe so short and adding the gel pad. Kinda like braces on your teeth, its slowly moving his bones back into the right place.
