Oh man, you can tell he really likes his new shoes! Reminds me of taking my kids to get new sneakers. They just HAD to wear them out of the store, then ran and jumped all the way to the car. LOL!! Apollo is obviously delighted. A happy boy!

I found your channel last night and fell under the trance of Apollo's beauty inside and out, and before I knew it I had stayed up for hours watching your channel and loved every moment. I also loved watching you paint, you are such a talented artist and your daughter certainly has inherited your gift too. You have a beautiful chemistry with Apollo and from the 1st video I watched, when you purchased him sight unseen and you saw the photo of his condition, I knew then that the universe bought you 2 together and he is indeed your soul horse. Sending big hugs for Apollo from Australia🦎, Kat🐬, Kai🐨 & Hunter🦘

I always enjoy Apollo. His recovery is an important part of his story. I recently found a similar horse, Oliver, that is in similar condition that Apollo was in when he was adopted. Oliver is at the KZbin channel Homestead Horsemanship. Oliver is a 2 year old stud colt that ended up in the horse trader muck which ultimately lead Oliver to being abused/neglected. So. Oliver now needs recovery just like Apollo did when he was 2. I suggest checking out Oliver to offer a little love and support as he now works on becoming the amazing stallion he is meant to be.

Great camera work and liked it without music. Have two questions, why 3 nails on one side and 4 on the other ? Watched the farrier who tried to fix the bad shoeing job that Apollo had and he put like saran wrap around his feathers to keep them out of the way. How come not this time ?
@apollotheshire
@apollotheshire Жыл бұрын
You want to put as few nails as possible so it’s about just enough but not too many. Not sure why he didn’t wrap his feather this time. Great observation! Thanks for watching. Greetings from me and Apollo🙂

It's obvious Travis has been doing this a long time. I can just see myself forgetting how hot the shoe is and grabbing it without a tool. ;) Love the square nails and expert job. 2 questions. 1) Why wasn't Apollo's leg hair secured so the farrier could see more easily? 2) What becomes of the old shoes? I have a pair of very old snow cleat shoes from my Grandmother's work horses. It's wonderful to see how happy Apollo is, running and jumping. Thanks for sharing.
@apollotheshire

Thanks for the questions- I’m not sure why he didn’t secure his hair this time. Sometimes he does but it doesn’t seem to matter to him even if it’s in the way. Minimum 10 weeks between re-shoeing? Huh, that is a long time. Do his hooves grow that slowly? My boy hardly made it to 8 weeks (he was a bit on the very heavy side of an Andalusian, most likely somewhere drafter got mixed in). Luckily, I always had a good ferrier for the first two years. When I moved in with my husband, I found a master of his craft. He was also a hoof orthepedic and slowly we got rid of his horseshoes (he had a rip in his right front hoof and thusly had to wear shoes on his front feet until the gap grew out). After that was grown out, he said my horse had basically good horn quality and his legs were straight enough to try barefoot. We never went back, despite intensive dressage lessons.
@apollotheshire
@apollotheshire Жыл бұрын
Apollos hoof could be twice as big as your Andalusian so perhaps that is why we can go longer. It feels all too often on the pocketbook 🤑 I would love if he could go barefoot and we have tried but… perhaps the 2000lbs doesn’t lend itself to not having shoes on. He was almost immediately sore. Thanks for watching! Greetings from me and Apollo 🙂

How fast does the horse's hoof grow? And I guess a horse that were in the wild would naturally wear down the hooves at a natural rate, but what is it that make shoes necessary? Is it riding in itself or does it depend on what surface the horse walks on?

The farrier MUST make sure the shoe provides equal distribution of weight. And the rasp is CRITICAL for him to "even out" the base of the hoof as well as ridding it of loose or compromised "cuticle." That's why a good fitting is essential... because it leads directly into the next time you shoe the horse.

I'm always amazed that there are people that ask the same inane questions over and over and my favorite is, "does it hurt the horse?" If it hurt the horse do you think any Farrier in his right mind would work on a 2,000 pound animal that could and would kick him to death and beyond? You might want to put a disclaimer in front of your video that clipping your hair, toenail and fingernails doesn't hurt either and neither does pounding nails into the same substance as what our hair and fingernails are made of. My gosh, has no one any common sense anymore? The same goes for cows toes/claws, same material. Apollo is a fabulously gorgeous animal. Great genetics
