Great stories about Susan recording Drive Me Wild in just one take and how the ladies never got a chance to film a video for Nasty Girl . The footage we all thought was a video was actually from a TV show . Cool info : and Brenda would be perfect teaching new artist artist developement . She knows how to answer questions without throwing people under the bus ( although she could ) , but she choose to still show grace and respect . These 3 ladies are amazingly respectful of Prince legacy .

Would love to hear more from Susan! She was there from Prince’s first album all they way to purple rain and she was his main girl for years! What did she think when Vanity came along? How did she handle all of that? How did her and Prince part? Did she write Make Up? What songs does she know of that were inspired by her?
@GTTg-kr2xh Жыл бұрын
I noticed this - I took that avoiding the deep dive was intentional since she was so young. If they dated off and on beginning in 1980 - that puts her . . . young and not going there saves a lot of more unanswered questions. Given that, I think Susann is a little shy. The wide eye look gives me a signal that she had nerves and a slight zone out moment. Great interview -- well crafted questions thus far.

The media back then really tried to paint a picture that she & Vanity couldn't/didn't get a long & create a "this one's better than that one" culture like they did with Mariah & Whitney, Brandy & Monica & so on, but then years later, there are pictures of Vanity & Apollonia HANGING OUT! just being good girlfriends/besties. I've always felt because of her extreme beauty, she was used a lot throughout her life. It was like a curse for her is what I believe. Prince used her, Hollywood used her and the church she belonged to used her as well. They all had ulterior motives. I am positive she lived the life of heartaches. And yes, I feel the church that she belonged to used her to try to bring in members. They would make sure wherever church she was scheduled to sermon at, they made sure she would be headlined on the lines of "Prince's ex-girlfriend, Vanity". Due to her constant visits to the hospital, racking up a major debt, the church never help pay off the debt. She died owing a lot of money. I believe deep down inside her, her heart trusted too much.

@@kaleoy7584 I agree with you, she sat all 3 of these ladies down. She was a natural beauty. She may have died in debt, but Jesus took her soul with him, she made it, and she became a honorable woman. Prince never got over her death. I wonder did he say sorry to her? I heard he did her bad.

This was so lovely💗 I'm thrilled to see my childhood idols together again. They sound the same as they did back in 83💗 It's funny bc my age group, we didn't know Vanity, we knew Apollonia--i'd scribble their logo on my school books lol. Later when Purple Rain went big and the media talked backstory, we were all wth is a 'Vanity?' We even waited for Apollonia when she appeared in Eddie Money's 'Shakin'" video. So no clue about Vanity. Time goes on, I'm obsessed with Vanity from her appearances on Soul Train, and the tv gigs promoting 'Under the Influence." Never got enough recognition for being funny af and super smart, quick witted. Truly I was so in awe that i was able to interact directly with Denise during her illness --she loved when i'd send her funny cat memes😂💗 Having grown up idolizing her and Apples and Brenda and Susan, it was overwhelming to have actual dialogue with someone i admired so much. I have the most sincere love and admiration for Apollonia too. She has such kind respect and sisterhood with Denise--it's rare that women can be so close, especially considering the circumstances that went on with Denise leaving and Apples coming in...But Apollonia is a truly classy, warm and amazing person, and i'm super glad her and Denise were like sisters. I treasure this video clip and still adore these lovely ladies💗

Thank you all for this interview! To get the backstage details of your lives was awesome. If you're writing that book DON'T HOLD BACK. LET IT ALL HANG OUT. I know I'm ready for a good read!!!

Uh, wow!!! This is the best thing in the whole world. As we reach the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain and 1984 in 2024, yes, the best way to describe this is a surreal experience.

The part of Apollonia talking about looking at Susan and Vanity in the magazine and seeing herself in them really hit home hard, and in a good way. It was the same as when Prince wanted to make Wendy & Lisa into lovers and he had the mix in his band because he wanted an accurate representation of what he saw in his world, especially seeing himself in these women.

You can tell Brenda treasured all those moments back then. Great memory recall. I can’t remember what I did yesterday half the time.😅
