My father was a baroque choir singer, and performed allover Europe. He died at 84, 5 years ago. When i hear baroque music, i can always hear his bass tone, this brings me to tears. Sills' ornaments are gorgeous, but it seems to lose some of the form -- as though measures are cut or added here and there to make room for the crazy (albeit beautiful) ornamentation, where Forsythe keeps Handel's form and improvises over it without losing the harmonic shape of the aria.

I do a translation into modern Italian and English. The words of the song are in archaic and poetic Italian, very difficult to understand by Italians of our times, especially the younger ones Da tempeste il legno infranto - The wood [of the ship] broken by the storms Se poi salvo giunge in porto - If it reaches safety in the port Non sa più che desiar - Has nothing more to desire Così il cor - tra pene e pianto - So the heart - between pain and tears - . Or che trova il suo conforto - When it finds its refuge [in love] - Torna l'anima a bear - Makes the soul happy again

I feel fortunate to live near Boston where she is a favorite with the Boston Early Music Festival and with Boston Baroque. This past weekend I saw her perform as Poppea with Anthony Roth Constanzo as Nerone. It was absolutely fabulous! She has been wonderful in every performance I’ve seen.
