I agree, I performed in the chorus of this oratorio when I was Grad school-it was a highlight of my life so far, and an undergraduate in the chorus dismissed Handel’s compositions as being too literal and obvious. I just laughed to myself, what a simpleton. Unworthy of the slightest response. ❤

Handel is one of my favourite composers, but not for the usual reasons. I love his counterpoint and phraseology as well as his progressions. I also love the ways his use of musical idioms. One can get very deep into the study of his music and always find new and delightful things. Even in his borrowings from other composers he brings something different to the music. When it comes to interpreting Handel, VoM gets it. They really have a handle on Handel if you will forgive the pun.

@Ralf Oswald We try to match the sound as it is heard in the front row. Although most recordings "balance" the sound, they don't reflect what the listener hears but rather a sort of idealized balance. An analogy would be if you put magnifying glasses in front of a painting--this is very useful, but usually done as a seperate detail so one can view the original unaltered.

I was totally transported by this music as if I were in a time machine - I clearly perceived Handel in his day (what a wonderful man and composer he was - divinely inspired) . I saw this music being played then with everyone wearing the costumes of the day and superimposed exactly upon that vision were these musicians. Time united into one moment for me. The flautist and singer actually became birds, not just an imitation of them. When you have imagination, you are no longer tethered by time. Thank you most excellent musicians for taking me on this journey.

@@dan78789 Yes, of course, he was nationalized English and his best music was composed in London, but in German spelling, "Handel" you can also write "Haendel". But if you write "Handel", without the umlaut or "deeresis" in the "a", it will be because we do not have the symbol on the keyboard by hand, for laziness (it costs nothing to put then an "e") or because we write the surname in English.

tomàs sánchez You are absolutely right that this music transcends any minor spelling issues. To clarify: the German spelling is obviously the original. However, after Handel (sic) moved to England in 1712, both the umlaut and German pronunciation were dropped and the name was anglicised (Georg also became George). You can see how Handel spelled and signed his name for most of his life if you Google the last page of the manuscript of Messiah, or indeed any other document. Another example is the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Lulli who moved to France aged about 20 and became a French subject about ten years later; he similarly changed his name to Jean-Baptiste Lully; like Handel, he is almost never referred to by his original name and to do so would be very odd.

@@VoicesofMusic That's the trouble with a lot of baroque instruments, as they concerts moved from the chamber of some king into the big concert halls for the masses, they weren't loud enough. But, I'm so glad they are making a comeback. I love that sweet, warm sound of period baroque instruments.

The very best wooden (Boehm) flutes could only be made from CUBAN cocus wood. That wood is now very rare, as Castro's friends in Moscow convinced him to clear the cocus forests in the late '50s. Nowadays the Japanese are making them (Boehm flutes) from African blackwood and grenadilla. There is a distinct difference. Now a metal Baroque flute would be interesting!
