What is the Apostles' Creed and how is it different from the Nicene Creed?
The word creed comes from the Latin word "credo," which means believe. We begin a statement of our Christian beliefs with the word "credo" or "I believe..."
Origins of the Creeds
The Nicene Creed was formulated over a series of centuries in the early Church beginning with the Council of Nicaea (325), from which the creed gets its name, and amended in the Council of Constantinople in 381.
Originally, the Nicene Creed was developed in response to the heretical beliefs about Jesus being spread by a Christian leader named Arius. The Catholic bishops, pope, and the Emperor Constantine gathered to affirm the Church's beliefs about the one God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Apostles' Creed probably developed between the 2nd and the 5th centuries. We have the first written account of this creed in AD 450 in Gaul (modern-day France). The text can be traced back earlier to the Old Roman Creed, which is referenced by some of the early Church Fathers.
Why is the Apostles' Creed named after the Twelve Apostles?
While there is a tradition that the Apostles' Creed originated with the Apostles, there is no evidence that they wrote the words themselves. However these creeds express our belief in the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
This Trinitarian belief originates in Jesus's Great Commission of the Apostles in Matthew 28 to baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Accepting the Triune God was an essential part of baptism from the very beginning of the Church. Later this belief was formulated into the creeds.
The The Apostles' Creed, however, is divided up into twelve articles just like the Twelve Apostles.
What are the major differences and similarities between the creeds?
The Nicene Creed is much longer and more descriptive, but there are also certain articles that appear in the Apostles' Creed that are not in the Nicene Creed.
The Nicene Creed is very descriptive about Jesus's humanity and divinity because it was formulated in response to misguided teachings of Arius and other heresies.
The Apostles Creed includes two phrases that are not found in the Nicene Creed:
First, "he descended into hell" referring to the time in between Jesus's death and resurrection when he welcomed all righteous souls into salvation.
Also, "the communion of saints," which refers to the holy men and women in heaven who remain united with us through the Church.

Thanks for the explanation. I came from a Presbyterian Church which used the Apostles creed. I'm now in an Anglican Church which uses the Nicene creed. Both are great but the Nicene creed more fully expresses what we should believe.

Anglicans use both creeds as regular part of corporate worship. Looking to the Book of Common Prayer, the Apostles Creed is to be recited as part of Morning Prayer and The Nicene Creed as part of the Eucharist . Both are summary statements of what all Christians should be able to agree upon according to Holy Scripture.

The Nicene Creed says, “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.” “begotten, not made”. Literally, “begotten” and “made” are the same. Doesn’t “begotten” imply “made”? So literally this verse is contradictory. “begotten, not made”. So there must be a profound meaning to this verse, that is: At a certain point many lifetimes ago, the Christ was begotten of the Father. Through practice in many lifetimes, He has eradicated all sins and sinful nature, and fully restored divinity and spirituality. The full divinity and spirituality of the Christ were not made, so He was not made. The reason why it can be explained in this way is because there are many lifetimes. Without many lifetimes, there’s no way to explain “begotten, not made”. Many lifetimes after being begotten, eventually the Christ was not made. Without “many lifetimes”, “begotten” and “made” would be the same. So this explanation is at least understandable in theory. --Light of Wisdom Church《The Trinity |God from God, Light from Light|Reincarnation | I Am the way, the truth and the life 08》

The Holy Spirit doesn’t proceed from the Father and the Son, in the Nicene Creed the HS only proceeds from the Father. The Father and Son is something that the Roman Catholic Church added without a Ecumenical council and was rejected by all other Churches and is one of the reasons of the Great Schism. Although the Protestants Churches claim to be against the RCC and what it stands for, they still use one of the arbitrary decisions made by the RCC.

Jesus did not descend into "Hell', He descended into Hades or 'katotori' (gr.) or the 'realm of the dead' or 'the dead'. Note: "Hell" is called Gehenna in Greek not - the 'realm of the dead' is calledf Hades in Greek. So where is Paradise? Paradise is an upper chamber of Hades. i.e. part of the realm of the dead.

The Trinity Recently I learned about electromagnetism: dielectric, magnetism, electric. Dielectric -- father Magnetism -- mother Electric -- Sun(the hybrid of father and mother) The father, Sun, holy spirit; the triad. is within us and we of it. The three persons in One, and One in three. Sun emits light, ray carries light, light brings illumination. Three modes in One. @@antonralph6947 God is impersonal. What's personal is your intimate connection with Intellect, acknowledging natures, the beauties, the divinities and virtues, your acts of charity for animals, nature and man, from within, contemplating apon the stars. This is a personal connection with God, but God is not personal. When you acquire these divinites, beauties, wisdom, it is a God's essence , just like Intellect is God's,, as well as the life within us. God has no reliance on you, no need of you, God is not a man. The problem with religious people is they think their personal God or ego belief, is God. And we see division because of this. The " my book is the word of God" and not yours. The only God I see amongst people are when those display understanding, Wisdom, virtue, charity, intellect, kindness, selflessness.

Arius had gotten the relationship between God and His Son perfectly correct. Modern teaching by God's Ministering Spirits reveals that Arius was right all along and the corrupt church under the influence of Satan got it all horribly wrong. When a church enters into communication with one of God's angels or Ministering Spirits one of the first questions asked is the relationship between God and Christ. The Ministering Spirit will only tell the truth even if it is unpalatable to the listener - and therein lies the answer as to why the Church today does not avail itself of the Spirits of Truth promised by Christ.

A SPIRIT - who is the Father - is there with Jesus ("God is a spirit"). "HOLY" is the name given by Jesus to that "SPIRIT", in order to be able to identify Him. That "Spirit" would have no name otherwise! Only THAT SPIRIT (the Father) is there, NO FURTHER SPIRIT IS WITH JESUS! "Father" (who is a spirit) and "Holy Spirit" are thus just two EQUIVALENT names: no third divine person exists. If you wish you can replace the name "Holy Spirit" by "Father" wherever it occurs in the gospels (not in the baptismal formula, for another reason).

@@NTNG13 Jesus had NO IDEA at all of what a trinity or a triune God is supposed to be. Jesus crystal clear reiterated four gospels along that He is WITH THE FATHER ONLY, period. For ex. "...You will leave me ALONE. Yet, I am NOT ALONE because THE FATHER is with me." Thus, just the Father is with Jesus. Jesus confirms that people when die will be with Father and Son ONLY "those who will BELIEVE in me through their word so that they all may be one, as you, FATHER, are in ME, and I in YOU. THEY also may be one in US..." (believers, Father and Son, no trinity is there, Jn.17:20,21)....as regards the apostles the same occurs: " On that day you will know that I am in my Father, you are in me, and I am in you.". Nobody else, crystal clear. Who is the Holy Spirit? Jesus receives the Holy Spirit at His baptism, the Holy Spirit is thus inside Him, but who is He? No problem, Jesus reveals who actually is inside Him: "the Father who DWELLS in me." Jesus even further specifies that ONLY THE FATHER is inside Him, therefore the Holy Spirit must necessarily be the Father, i.e. it's just a different name for the same Father. Jesus confirms that the Holy Spirit actually is THE FATHER also in his sermon concerning the TWO blasphemies: if the first mentioned blasphemy is directed to the Son, the second one must necessarily be directed to the Father and also here for the Father is used that name instead: "Holy Spirit". If "Holy Spirit" is just a DIFFERENT name for the SAME Father, this of course implies that the Father must be "A SPIRIT"! That is fully confirmed by Jesus, who explicitly says that the Father is a Spirit (see Jn. 4:23,24). The Father is thus called "Father," "Holy Father" "Holy Spirit" by Jesus...equivalent names. In fact God is transcendent, absent, and therefore does not "personally" perform His actions here on Earth or in heaven ("nobody has seen God at any time"). You can check it out in the gospels, you can see that there are NO actions directly performed by God. Rather, such actions are taken here by Him in his "form of Spirit", who is called "Holy" by Jesus. In this form the Father was responsible for Mary's pregnancy, helped Jesus on His journey in the wilderness, later also helped Him in speaking, later He was helping the apostles too. Jesus simply is together with that Spirit who is the Father, called "Holy Spirit". Period. I.e. no trinity exists. That Spirit of course comes from the absent God. Thus, Father, Son and Holy Spirit are not three different persons as you maintain.

In fact, originally the Christ should have sinful nature, but eventually eradicated it through practice. Why? Because according to the Nicene Creed, at a certain point many lifetimes ago, the Christ was begotten of the Father. Till many lifetimes later did God send Him to save mankind as the Savior. This is a fact. But why did God beget the Christ many lifetimes ago, but send Him to be the Savior many lifetimes later? Because the Christ was initially sinful and unprepared. He needed time to practice. If the Christ was initially sinless and didn’t need practice, then there’s no need for God to beget Him at that certain point many lifetimes ago. God can simply beget Him 2000 years ago when mankind needed to be saved, and then directly send Him to save mankind. Does it make sense? --Light of Wisdom Church《The Trinity |God from God, Light from Light|Reincarnation | I Am the way, the truth and the life 08》

Why did the Apostles baptize all their converts in the name of Jesus Christ only ? There’s absolutely no reference of anyone being baptized in the titles of the Father, Son , and Holy Ghost in the New Testament . So the Apostles understand that the Name of the Father , Son , and Holy Ghost is Jesus the Christ . God is a Spirit John 4:24 and a Spirit and is invisible . The Spirit or Holy Spirit fills the universe . Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God , the firstborn of every creature . That’s Jesus Christ that’s the image of God . The disciples had a much better education and understanding of the Godhead than anyone ever since they were taught three and a half years by the greatest teacher that ever lived Jesus Christ . The Apostle Peter knew exactly what he was commissioned to preach when he gave the plan of salvation in Acts 2:38 and passed down to us today in the 39th verse . That’s exactly word for word what Jesus taught the disciples to preach in Luke 24 :47 . There’s not three persons in the Godhead . 1 Timothy 3:16 says “ Great is the mystery of godliness, God was manifest in the flesh “. Jesus is the Emmanuel or God with us not the second person in the Godhead . In Revelation 1:8 Jesus said “ I am Alpha and Omega , the beginning and the ending , saith the Lord which is , and which was , which is to come , the Almighty “. It’s all in him Jesus .
