The part where Lady Lihua's ladies in waiting were fighting, they didn't recognise Maomao at first. Most likely because she got rid of freckles. So when Maomao covered her nose & gave her the look, one of them immediately realised. She was the same one whom Maomao had slapped.

MaoMao is one of the best female lead i've seen in years. She's so lovable and goofy but also has a serious and curious side that you can't not love.

This past year really was the year of competent protagonists with massive neurodivergent energy. Mao Mao, Frieren and Laios are some of my favorite characters of all time now and I can't wait until we get season 2 of all their shows. I wouldn't call Mao Mao indifferent, more pragmatic. I love the dynamic she has with Jinshi where they both kinda bring out a childish side of each other. A bit of historical context. Lady Lishu (the little one) being in two emporers harems was something that would have been almost unheard of. Typically, when the emporer dies, any concubines or wives who did not have children get sent to a monastery. They probably made the exception because of her age but it would've been a scandal either way.

Lishu is the only one from the old emperor's concubines. Ah Duo, iirc, was a concubine when the current emperor was still a prince. Her infant "died" during childbirth, again iirc. About Jinshi, you could not be more... .

Something that's really interesting about this show is, while it has the typical stand-in female characters that are just there to be rude and fawn over Jinshi for the most part, most of the women in brothels and poor positions in general are very intelligent, cunning and resourceful as they have to adapt and survive a world that's built against them.
