Appalachia’s Storyteller: Trouble on Thunderhead Mountain

What a great story, brought the hairs on my neck up. I was told what I believe to be this story by a Roman Catholic Priest and a Rabbi in the Saint Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada on December 12th 1989 when I was taken there for an MRI on my neck after a multiple truck accident. My right lower leg was bent awkwardly around the gear shift in the cab over 1 ton that I was driving delivering plumbing supplies to a retirement home that was being constructed. Both EMT's were certain that it was broken and I had no reason to doubt that. They took me to the emergency at the nearest hospital and told the x-ray tech that it was broken. I laid on that hard table while he took many many x-rays of my bruised and swollen leg. He finally came out and said that he wasn't going to take anymore x-rays because I would be glowing in the dark and there wasn't a single crack or break he could see. He then asked if I was sore anywhere else while he had me on the table and I told him that my back was aching, probably from the hard table and my neck was also feeling stiff and sore. He took an x-ray of my back first and said that it looked like I might have quite a few crushed vertebrae in my back, the top three lumbar and the lower three cervical. He then proceeded to x-ray my neck and he came out and urgently told me not to move as he was grabbing some sand bags to put around my neck. My initial reaction was to sit up but quickly went back flat when he screamed don't move!!! As he placed the sand bags around my neck and secured me to the backboard, he said that my neck was definitely fractured but he couldn't tell how bad and that he was going to send me to the Saint B. For a thorough MRI of my entire spine and my right leg. That was at 9:15am and I had to wait until 6:30am for an ambulance to arrive. If was -48°f that day (coldest day in Winnipeg 's history) and a lot of the ambulances couldn't start and were massively understaffed due to so many people unable or unwilling to come to work that day. When I finally arrived they took me up and I was given a MRI scan they took me out and told me that they called the Nuerosurgeon because my neck was definitely broken and incredibly swollen in between C1 and C 5 vertebrae. They asked if I was religious because they had a Priest and a Rabbi who could come in and pray for me. I said that I would appreciate it if one of them would. They both came in and prayed for me. I felt a really peaceful calm come over me and the doc arrived and asked me to squeeze his hands and he said that he was surprised by how much I was able to squeeze. He asked when the MRI took place (about 45 minutes before) and he requested another to see if anything has changed since then. It was almost back to normal. The doctor said that he figured that something was up because it wouldn't be humanly possible for me to squeeze his hands as tight as I did. He ordered another MRI in another hour to compare. He returned after that and said that it was nothing short of a miracle for it to do that. They fitted me with a halo neckbrace and took me back down to emergency to await for an ambulance to return me to the other hospital as they didn't have a bed available for me there. As I was waiting the Priest came around and said that the doctor told him that the prayers must have worked. I thanked him and said that I hope that you and the Rabbi won't argue over who's prayer was the one that created the miracle. He laughed and said no, we both know that God hears all that believe in him and that is the foundation of our friendship. He then told the story of the two preachers who had a bad struggle between them and how the one gave up his life to save the others grandchild. The Rabbi came around and I said the same joke to him and he told me the same story. When I thanked them both for being there in my darkest hour, they both had replied that God's house has many rooms and all who believe in him will be welcomed and that all credit goes to God he is good and blessed me that day. I saw them a few years ago in the seniors retirement home that I was supposed to deliver to that day to visit a childhood friend's dad who was a resident of the home. They remembered me and both were residents of the home themselves. They were both in their early 90's but still kept themselves busy helping people with their spiritual needs and enjoying their friendship.

This was an amazing story! As a child, my parents made sure we spent two weeks in the sweltering heat of summer at the Batist Camp Meeting. More frightening than the inevitable evening thunderstorms were the hell fire and brimstone sermons that scared us into nightly repentance.

Well, I am misty eyed. I grew up in West Asheville, and my family goes back to the 1700's in Madison and Buncombe Counties. I love your stories so, so much. His name, Charles Spurgeon, who once said the Holy Spirit rides in the chariot of scripture not in the wagon of modern day thought. I love facts and factual commentary, true documentaries and Storie Tellers just like you and your true stories. History is the love of my life. Lol. I'm laughing through my tears, JD. What a wonderful story and reminder - that we all need from time to time - to love our neighbors and not to judge (and many other lessons). How very brave these people were in so many ways. Thank you so much for giving us this history of real people in a real place and time. I loved your delivery of Preacher Ike's sermon. I grew up in a tiny country Baptist church and went to many a revival . I well remember the cadence of the preacher's voice with the "ah" at the end of every sentence once he got really worked up. He always had the Bible in one hand and a handkerchief in the other to wipe away the spittle from his mouth and the sweat from his brow. I've often wondered why revivals were held in the summer when it was so hot and sticky that you thought you really were at hell's door. Why not in the winter? I'm way behind all these other folks but am so excited at what I have to look forward to as I catch up on your wonderful stories. So very glad I found your channel.

This story's storm reminds me of The Columbus Day Storm of 1962 which my seven/eight year old self and my younger siblings and parents survived. What a storm! I'd never seen such a storm before or since and I'm now 69 years old, pushing seventy.

I have just recently discovered this page , I grew up in the southern Appalachian mnts , I have heard stories about the mountains my whole life , some of them will give you pain in your side from laughing so hard and some will make you say naw that can't be true , but the videos on this Channel are truly entertaining, thank you so much for these stories!!!
