What aggravates me is the condescending tone that people use when talking to those of us in the mountains. We are not deaf, dumb or have the mind of a child. We are intelligent people who are proud of where we come from and what we have, however small it may be.

I don't understand why they can't give without ramming the word of the Lord down peoples throats. They're asking them to be thankful for poverty. Give to people because they need it and not for any other reason.

Tabitha Wallen Sweetness, my history on my mom's side is our French ancestors moved over here from France. They worked for ppl in their homes there. They set out for America and they were smart, too. They hauled all their furniture from the ship up the mountain to be the first settlers in West Virginia. I'm so proud of that. The women for sure were all God fearing strong women who loved the Lord. Many of their men made life harder than better but the women stayed strong in the Lord or I would not be here today. They were amazing ppl, I am sure. Living off the land and my relatives from there all did something great for the Lord in their lives. Each generation got better in education in this land and in moving up. Making life better. It took several generations but they did always do better. I believe you are not stupid. I'm kin of you in a way. Maybe we are even related. Who knows. Just stay close to God. Me too. Every day pray and read some bible. Even if you just read one verse and memorize it to help yourself and maybe even someone else. You are not stupid and shame on those ignorant ppl who talk down to you. God sees everything and loves you and you are a child of the most high and only God. You are precious to Him. Make sure you confess sins and invite Him into your heart so He will be with you and you will go to heaven. I want to write more and forgive me if you feel I acted the same shameful way. I'm sorry and I don't look down on you. I love God and love you. If you have accepted Christ into your heart, too, I can't wait to see you in heaven and run up to you and hug you and give you a kiss on the cheek and say, "Hey, Cousin, Praise the Lord God almighty forever and ever. We are finally home. No more tears, fears or pain nor poverty. We live in mansions in heaven. Hallelujah!!! I hope I'm not ramming the word of God down your throat. How mean. You might know the Bible better than me. You might not feel the same way about God but I know in my case, in my history in those very same mountains that those God fearing women who were my own kin got ahead farther each generation because they believed in God and lived His word. They didn't want to be rich. They just wanted to not be cold in the winter and have food every day, all day and all their basic needs met so they didn't suffer and God saw that they were obeying Him and blessed each one. When they asked God for help, God gave them better than they dreamed in some cases. They did work hard tho. I won't deny that.

What I don't understand is why so many of these families that are living in poverty do not keep up with the outside of where they live. I came from a family of 4 children. My daddy was the one who worked as a bricklayer, my mother kept our home, cleaned, cooked & watched over me & my siblings. My daddy's work would sometimes me sparce during Winter months & we relied on unemployment benefits. We were never on any assistance. As soon as each of us we're old enough we were given chores inside & outside the home. We were taught to take care of what we had. Never to waste food & respect our parents & grandparents. We were not wealthy by any means, although our home & yard were always well kept. No trash laying around, grass mowed. Just because you may not have a lot does not mean you have to allow your home & surrounding to be littered with trash. Btw, we raised a garden each year & canned the fruits of our labor. Instead of so many handouts, which is a blessing, why don't they provide these people with items & the knowledge how to be more self sufficient? Just my opinion. God bless all.

Please don't think that our area is really like that. Any time someone comes here they film the dirtiest people and places. They are the exception not the rule. We make sure that our children are extremely well educated and take pride in there appearance and homes. We know the opinion that most people have of anyone coming from Appalachia and we want to make sure that we prove them wrong. We might speak slowly but that doesn't mean we think slowly.

We are to give out of the abundance that we have been blessed with. This is what ministry means. Alot of time and effort is put into what they do. For anyone who has not been involved in missions,like this; you have no idea how much love goes into what is done.They mention themselves based on how blessed it is to give. How would anyone know anything if stories weren't told. Trust me; the people we meet on these trips bless us more than we ever could them.

Donna Coughlin I agree. They needed those coats and things but could not afford them. I'm glad they were able to get some needs met and kids there are happy just for that. There was a time I was poor with three kids. No heat but a space heater in the cold way North some we all slept in one room to stay warm with winter clothes piled on and blankets. I praise God that we had the winter clothes and coats and blankets to wear to bed and that space heater. Thankful that the electricity stayed on. I've seen both sides and lived it. I love you and pray for you and had supported a family for many years once I could do that. I'm not bragging. I had to stop but I felt Hod would have me help them until their kids could get jobs as graduated from or nearly graduated from high school. God called me to help me take care of my dad for almost two years bed ridden from End stage Parkinson's Disease. I had to leave my family to do that. The youngest was 19. I wish it had been when she was a little older that I had to leave for dad out of state so far away but God knew why. I guess it was not for me to know. Some day I will understand in heaven, maybe sooner. I was just remembering as closing this message that one time we only had one sleeve of soda crackers and ketchup. Of course the kids ate first. It was hard but the Lord saw us through and put us in a better situation. Thank you God!!!!

Beautiful! One of the things that stood out most to me was that you all actually took the time to get to know the families and were so open to sharing your love with them and making them feel they had value. Many people equate money with value. But each one of us are valuable to God and it is touching to see that played out in your works. Bless you.

Religion is a huge part of why the people are so poor.
@dcaballo8
@dcaballo8 10 жыл бұрын
There is good and bad in everything - including religion. It all comes down to individual people. There are good and bad leaders in every aspect of life starting with our parents, then teachers, bosses, heads of churches, government, etc. If you feel negative about religion you might want to look deeper than your own experiences. Generalizations like yours can be dangerous and you could be missing out on something great. I'm not trying to be sarcastic. Just pointing out that religion itself isn't the problem. People are.
@MissPiscespets
@MissPiscespets 10 жыл бұрын
If people tried harder to improve their lives instead of concentrating on religion, things would obviously be better. People think "God will take care of me" instead of just taking care of themselves. If something bad happens, it's God's test - not something simply happening. If something good happens, it's God helping them or rewarding them for being faithful.

the things that this ministry has done is great. what I cannot understand, though, is WHY demoralize the people they came to help? That's exactly what they've (dove broadcasting) done. As other comments have stated, do the good-will. But for goodness sake don't patronize people's dignity for the sake of good deeds. This all puts me in mind of a bible scripture that talks about the Pharasees and Sadusees. These people, sadly, have acted like Pharasees. "Look what we did" (seeking recognition for themselves) is their attitude. Here's another verse; "verily they have their reward."

Oh I have A comment . I was laid off from the only job I have ever had that I actually enjoyed . The coal mines in southwest Virginia are the safest place in the world . It's A dangerous job do not get me wrong . I only worked for A few years underground but the time I was underground I always felt safe . The only reason that I felt safe was the people . The best people I have ever met in my life . Hardest working , most intelligent , down to earth people you would ever meet . The mines that have been shut down in this area have devastated the economy . They just shut down A whole hospital In Lee county . The effects are on our jobs . Now there are a few large mines still open for NOW . But all of that coal goes to China , to support the steel industry that left the rust belt behind . I worked my butt off to get the best job of my life and then politicians threw it away for Fracking . I mean come on have you even looked into what kind of chemicals they are pumping into our ground water . These people do not care . If we could educate these people where are the jobs for them to fill? To many Americans thinks all that is needed is education. Well my friends most of our manufacturing jobs went to Mexico, China and other countries. Corporate CEO's no longer have community spirit or feel the need to support the communities where the money was made that allowed them to move out of country. It is greed that is killing the working families.

I'm not trying to pass judgment but I never understood why people don't wait until they are established financially first before having kids. Of course accidents happen but that's what birth control is for. My great great g-ma had 9 kids and was poor as a church mouse and worked herself to death taking care of kids, and she took care of all nine kids off of a meager income. If you see that you are poor with 2 kids why pump out 7 more kids to feed and clothe? At some point tubes should be tied to avoid falling deeper into poverty. I chose to not have kids after seeing the struggles of families growing up in the inner-city. However, may God Bless the struggling families.

+CycleCruza In these communities, that would mean never having children, and dying alone. That's a lot to ask, in order for everyone to be middle class. Somebody has to make up the bottom rung of the ladder, and they want something of themselves to survive to the next generation, like anyone else.
@CycleCruza
@CycleCruza 8 жыл бұрын
+Trish O'Connor You always have the choice to move to an area with better income opportunities, but when you have a bunch of kids it makes it really difficult to move. Any single healthy able-bodied person can do well for themselves if they put their mind to it, there are no excuses these days, at least here in the USA.

Again, SOMEBODY has to make up that bottom rung of the ladder. Even if you grant that "anybody" can work their way up, "everybody" can't. No corporation can exist without its lowest-paid positions. We've seen what happens when we promote education as the panacea to eradicate poverty: More people getting education just means that employers can demand even more education for the same jobs. Somebody still has to land at the bottom, even if everybody had a great work ethic, good education, whatever qualities you list as necessary for upward mobility. Given that there absolutely HAS to be a bottom, saying that those at the bottom simply shouldn't reproduce is asking a lot. Merry Christmas, anyway! (Thanks, Mary, for not waiting until you were "established" to have a baby.)

I live right over the mountain in VA, and this scene is far too familiar. Poverty, drugs and unemployment is the way of life around here. These kids don't have a chance. They're being taught how to sit on your ass and sponge off the government. These charities are all good and fine, but money needs to go toward community and outreach programs that get the parents up off their ass, learn how to read and write, life skills that will better them in the long run. These people can't even conduct themselves in a job interview, let alone perform the tasks expected of them. Handouts...and more handouts. That's how they survive. It would shock you to learn how they manipulate the government AND CHARITIES into "taking care' of their kids, so they don't have to provide for them. What money they get, goes straight to their next "fix". It's only getting worse. No...God has no part in this. It's drugs, stupidity and knowing how to work the system...they're being trained from one generation to the next. Our county is just as bad. I watch it on a daily basis. PATHETIC. I worked 2 and 3 jobs at a time to take care of my kids when they were growing up. After my husband passed away, it was up to ME. I made sure they had a great education and graduated high school...and they did. I earned a college degree in between working 50 hours a week. I did it. God didn't. It makes me SICK to watch these deadbeats. Can't find work?? Then get up off your ass and change that! Go get your CDL, drive a truck...work 2 jobs at the gas station and walmart, fast food, whatever it takes!! just do it!! Where there's a will...there's a damn way!!! Teach your kids that life is hard...but worth it!! ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

People are so dumb. Right down the road a man and woman lives in a little rough looking cabin. [ Looks like some of the shacks on here ] Beside that is a camper his daughter lives in with her 6 year old son. Truth is he is a industrial electrician he makes close over 80,000 per year. Difference between them and these good doers is i would bet he has a couple hundred thousand in the bank. I often run around in my old junk truck, wearing my raged clothes. One day a lady and man came up and offered me and my son money. Guess they thought we was poor. I mean it was nice of them . But i had just bought another piece of land. And still had over 10,000 in my pocket. Just because a lot of these people look poor. Bet they got more cash than 99 per cent of city folks.

Why not creat a wellfare state where taxes from residents of the country and companies build up the state? Then the people would have the same opportunity to form their lives and to feel free. Why in the world are these missionaries bringing things like chocolate to these families?? All that chocolate promotes is obesity, tooth-decay, and diabetes. Instead, the missionaries should exclusively be buying the Walmart ‘GREAT VALUE’ house-brand of all items of non-perishable foods. Then, the families should only be given frozen foods, canned foods, and foods in jars/canisters. These types of packaging allows for whatever is unused to be either re-frozen, put back in the cupboard, or put back in the refrigerator/freezer without spoiling. Oatmeal is good for breakfast and should be accompanied with powdered milk. Ok for some frozen berries if the person wants them. For lunch and/or dinner, the families get lots of cans of stew, pork & beans, spaghetti & meatballs, ravioli, canned veggies, canned beef, canned hams, canned chicken, jars of pickled pig’s feet/snouts & ham hocks. It’s a total waste of money to give the kids in any of these families a toy. It’s a waste because it’s impractical. The families should also go to the rummage boxes that the missionaries set out in the schools/gyms and pick through them to find shoes, coats, shirts, pants, under-wear, socks, etc. Nothing wrong with ‘hand-me downs’ for kids and even adults/parents. No clothes should ever be thrown away; if there are holes in them, they are torn, or missing buttons, etc, they should be mended. When it gets to the point when they are thread-bare or beyond being mended, they should be used to make a quilt.

My favorite is the Schuster family. They seem to have a lot of genuine love for each other. The Mother and Father adopted that little boy and girl, who were the children of the Mother’s niece who died of one of those female cancers affecting her private parts. Speaking of private parts, look at the expression on the face of the eldest daughter (the obese one) in the green shirt when of the missionaries gives her a package of panty liners. That girl is very embarrassed and looks right into the camera. She tries to hide the panty liners by pushing them next to her.

I kept reading, waiting to find that you weren’t serious, but I guess you are. I’ll pray for your heart - these kids deserve to have fun and enjoy toys every but as much as every other kid does. They deserve a nice outfit to be proud of. The families already re-use and pass down clothing and supplies; why would you deny them the joy of something “unnecessary” that’s so rare in their lives?

It’s 2023 and so we all have to be practical. What’s more important for a child? Is it more important for a child to have fun and enjoy toys OR to have food to eat? Toys (alone) without food in their tummies is not going to keep them alive. Without food, the children will get sick. It’s a question of prioritizing between ‘nice to have’ (toys) or ‘need to have’ (food). I’ll pray for your heart and hope that you realize what’s really the most important thing to give these Appalachians!

Why don't we spend time and money to educate these people instead of telling them 4000 year old religious fairy tales. That God is going to take care of them...... What your seeing here is a total lack of education, the times of pay for hard labor has passed them by. There are no jobs for them. Not being educated in the 21st century is the worst position you can be in. Your going to be way better off putting that bible down, and getting you a book on science and computers. THAT is what will solve your problems, education. That will get them a real job.... The rest is just wasted time....

randy white You're wrong about that. God is not the reason they are poor. A Christian does not think that God is going to feed them and provide for them. The Bible is a great guide to live your life by. A science book will not get you into the kingdom of Heaven. These people may seem poor to the worldly man but they are rich in the kingdom of Heaven. Randy White: Education in and of itself is a great thing. Everyone will go far by having it. However, education alone is NOT enough. Not just here, but all across the country, we have "educated fools", because of more education than employment. Take a trip round the schools and colleges, open your mind to realize education is only a step (albeit an important one) towards self-betterment.

randy white Your opinion, though valued and important, is thought by many to be the reason this country is in the place that it is in rotting from the inside out. Long ago when people put their Bibles down, turned away from God and family, and turned towards government and science is when we took a turn for the worst. Albeit... I am looking forward to science soon proving to the world that performing an abortion is indeed killing another human person, a painful killing at that. Which is not only against Christian beliefs but does not support our first constitutional right to life (at taxpayers expenses).... Long live science ... But back to the Bible. 😁
