It was a beautiful culture back then. Poverty erases an awful lot of the silliness of society we see today. And you're right Mr Donnie, color didnt matter back in the mountains. I consider it one of my greatest blessings to be raised in the Bible Belt. Growing up in a little country church made me the person I am today. Sometimes I sit and think about all the members of that church that have passed on. I know they prayed for me from the time I was small until they left us. I am so very thankful for each prayer they said for me. I am thankful for the example they set...the things they taught me...but most of all for the love shown to me. Thanks for sharing this Donnie. It has touched my heart more than you could know. God bless.

My son was baptized in the river near an old Methodist church in 2004 I believe it was. Right before he went in the Marines and went to Afghanistan. The whole congregation came down to the river even though most of them didn’t even know him. That really touched my heart that day. Thank God he made it through and made it back home! Hi Celebrating Appalachia , Hi Donnie Laws Both of y’all great channels, a great blessing to many. I am from Texas. I am 44 years old, single, and don’t have family in East TN. A few years ago, before Covid, I was struggling bigtime and decided to take a couple journeys driving to TN. I ended up near Newport TN and couldn’t believe the beauty on I40 between Hartford, TN and Asheville, NC. This may sound like a ridiculous question but I really would like to move out there, but the Appalachian area seems so hard to break into socially unless you have an already built in place family living in that area. People are so nice but family is everything. Is there any tips to recommend where might be the best place to try to move anywhere Knoxville or East of Knoxville. If you were in my position, what would you do?

@@stephenoneill2931 go out and start by meeting the people of the area let them know who you are from inside your soul people don’t take kindly to out siders you have to show them who you really are as a person don’t be fake show the real side of you and if you are truly one of them you will fit in remember don’t be fake be who you really are I know from experience been there if you are true they will except you for who you are just don’t be fake best wishes to you.The power of prayer remember that if you show any thing different they will know who you are. That’s how God works.

Donnie: when I was a teen in the 60s my parents used to farm me out to my Grandad's ranch in Central Texas. While there I took a opportunity to make a little money bucking hay with a team in our county for the local ranchers.. All the rest of the team were black. We worked together, ate together, and one Sunday, I went to a Black Baptist church with the guys. That was an EXPERIENCE as a kid I will tell you. They were far more outgoing then what I was used to and all seemed to sing and dance. I was accepted and had some fine fine cooking after Church too. Hard hard work, but I made some good friends. I have fond childhood memories of our 11 family members lining up outside our one bathroom every Saturday night to take baths, lay out our clothes, and polish our shoes for Church the next day. We needed to take two car loads and we took up an entire church pew. My fondest memory is of my parents rustling the pages of the Bible as they read from it at home. I sure miss the old time camp meetings where at 6:30 we all started to gather at the church. If you wanted a good seat you had to get there early. Church started right at 7pm. If you showed up at 6:55 unless you were an old timer there was a good chance your seat was the floor. Many times us kids had to give yup our seats so an older person could set have our seat and we sat on the floor and hoped we didn't get step on when the spirit of God broke loose. Many nights the service went past midnight. Most of the younger kids fell asleep under the church pews. But us older kids stayed awake it was fun watching people praising and shouting and they were even dancing in the spirit. But best not let your folks catch you dancing outside of church. You could only dance when the Spirit of God moved you to it. They called it dancing us kids called it spinning... LOL... But let me say we seen blind eyes opened every night we seen people being healed of many things. Even seen demons come out of people. As a kid that was scary. We seen one lady vomit up her stomach cancer. next day she went to the doctor and they could not find any cancer in her body. She past away 31 years latter she was 92 and went to sleep one night and never woke up they said at her funeral. Yepper them were the days. Up here in Wisconsin they never had meeting like that.... I miss just having church where people didn't worry about what time service ended or how many songs you sung that took up time. 2 songs and 3 courses is the limit. Preach could only preach 20 minutes. Most churches don't even have and alter call for the sinners and the sick. They have them raise their hands then they repeat a little prayer. I best shut up now.... Y'all be blessed in Jesus name... BBE..

Other Sundays they just had Sunday School. My Aunt June always taught the kids. At the end all would sing hymns together and one by one stand and recite a bible verse. Little ones would each say "Jesus wept" - the Bible's shortest verse. My maternal Grandfather donated land across the road for their church and helped buIld it. Both of these churches still stand today. Thank you Donnie.

God bless you too. I live next door to my little Methodist church that is from way back in the 1800s. We have our weekly service and what a blessing to able to walk next door to it. I am so grateful to have been able to raise my kids next door to the church. I even found an arrowhead in the church yard last December.

What a beautiful tribute to a time gone by and to our elders. We still go to a little country church just 3 miles outside our town. We can see the Poteau and Sugarloaf Mountain range so clearly. Thank you Mr. law for a beautiful tribute to churches in the, "Wildwoods."

Beautiful video. It makes me think that financial prosperity and industrialization took a real toll on American's spiritual values. How I wish I could go back in time and sit in some of these old country churches and sing with the congregation and listen to the preaching.

Thank you again Donnie for this video. My grandfather build the Kelly Holler Baptist Church in Dayton, Tennessee back in the 1930s. I used to love going to these small country churches when we would go to Tennessee in 1950s to this day. Donnie the Lord has taught you well how to pull at our heart strings. All of these videos are such a blessing. Thank you again from and old Baptist pastor.God Bless you

Yes, my friend, you will be with those loved ones again ❤️ I was baptized in the Jordan Lake, in NC. Somehow, knowing my precious Jesus was baptized in the river Jordan made the moment all the more sweet. I haven’t thought about that day in years. Thank you for the sweet walk down memory lane☺️

Loved this very special video, and wept, especially at the end. I belong to an old country church that had 2 front doors until 1947, and nobody seems to remember why, but you have shed the light on this old tradition! We are Cumberland Presbyterian and sit in families nowadays. And we had a cross that said Jesus Saves on one side, and Get Right with God on the other, and a big tent revival. But it went the way of everything, as well as our 170 year old pine trees that were threatening to fall on the church house that is almost that old. I was a pall bearer for a neighbor from Speedwell, and had to help fill in his grave out there. The graves were all aligned to face east, which made them off-angle to the roadways. I thought that was strange until I asked the preacher. As a child I watched my Daddy and Grampa baptize people in the river, and also watched years later as their caskets were carried to the cemetery, not too many years apart. I was saved when I was 8 but they made me wait until I was 12 to be baptized. I wish that more people would realize how important that the Lord and the Church are to the very fabric of our beloved country. I am sending this video to my family members. It may be the best of all of your videos.

Thanks Mr Laws.God Bless You too. I think it's so special that You have that home movie of You getting Baptized. It looks like Your Daddy had one Beautiful last ride through the Gap.About a month ago I went back up the mountains where I got Baptized. An old wooden church from the 1820s. I was very sad to see it closed. They even took the Cross down.I think they should have left the Cross up. Still, that will always be a Special Sacred spot to me forever. It's the place where God let me be His child.God Bless You Mr.Laws.

Oh, if the walls of those churches could talk, what tales they would tell! Oh, all the sermons preached, the hymns sang, the testimonies shared, the prayers prayed, and people getting saved. I’d rather much go to a church like these featured on this video when will those huge mega churches I see on TV. Thank you, Mr. Laws for sharing this with us. It is a very moving and touching video about the churches in Appalachia. Blessings…

Oh Donnie. What memories! Growing up we would have all day singing and dinner on the ground next to our little church. The singers were the likes of The Statler Brothers., The Oak Ridge Boys, The Jordanaires and Gold City. All of the best would come and sing all day. The food galore outside under the big trees. Man what a time. I miss that so very much. Where did that go? What happened to those kind if fellowships? Thank you Donnie for bringing back such wonderful memories AGAIN! I have said it before, you are home to me. Thanks for the memories. I love your channel more than ANY on KZbin.

This one sure hit home Donnie! I was 8 years old when they baptized my Mom and Dad together about two miles from where I live here in southern WV. There's a color picture of it somewhere. You can't count the crowd in that picture! My Mom's dad had been under conviction but was fighting it. You can see him squatted on the creek bank like the old men used to do. He was in a car hit by a train a few months later! There were three of them killed. We never know! Great video!
