Appalachian Grocery Haul - Getting Groceries & Eating Donuts

Typically, I meet my Mom every Friday morning at the grocery store and we get groceries together. This time, it was so nice to have Austin with me and we enjoyed our donuts together. What I buy week to week can vary, but we always buy meat, veggies, fruit and dairy items. I always love to see other peoples grocery hauls and see what they like to eat. FREEZE 1/2 the bread loaf in a Zip Lock Baggie, and when you want it, take a couple slices in the toaster and they defrost immediately and are fresh! You can do the same when you bake it.... just make sure to slice it first so you can easily take 2 slices out at a time.

I remember the first grocery shopping trip when I got married in 1970, I spent $21 and some change. I was freaking out because it was soooo expensive but the register tape was sooooo long😅. $21 won’t hardly get anything now. It’s always been so much cheaper to buy junk than getting fresh healthy food. It’s wonderful to have help getting the groceries into the house 😅. Have a wonderful week.😊❤

I know, we were married in 1976 and you could get a whole cart full for $20-$25. It’s gotten insane. I just hope people can keep affording food even if it’s just something to keep away hunger pains.

I like those Vital Farms pasteur-raised eggs. They're tasty and very healthy. I like to imagine the chickens running around in a well-manicured yard eating bugs, wearing Ray Bans and Hawaiian shirts, and living their best life.😉 God bless!

Corie, your grocery haul looks great. I used to buy chicken parts when I was younger, thought it was less wasteful. I now always buy a whole organic chicken and cut it up for whatever recipe calls for but save all bones whether raw or cooked and make mybown chicken stock.. I freeze it in ice cube trays or small containers. Very useful for soups, sauces and whatever needs a punch of stock. From a whole chicken I can produce a roasted chicken dinner, leftover chicken is chopped finely to make chicken spread for sandwiches. Also use chicken leftovers to make a potpie and once I boil the carcass and reserved bones make a broth and when removing bones from broth save the bits of chicken stuck to the bones to add to soup. A whole chicken can produce the most meals and is a super way to stretch a dollar. Like I said, wish I knew how to do this when my family was younger so thought I'd pass this on to you. Really enjoy your channel.

Agree, getting a whole chicken is the best deal. Love a roasted chicken. Sliced chicken breast sandwiches, leftover for stir-fry. Stock! But sometime am just grabbing chicken thighs (bone-in so still can make stock).

Corie ask your Dr. About eating shellfish. During my pregnancies & everyone I know were told eating shellfish is a big no-no. And tell Katie that if she is using kitty litter that she should not change the litter box. Have your Dad to it, that is a another no-no when you are pregnant.😊

I so enjoyed this video =) We have WinCo in our area, which tends to be cheaper than and have better quality products than Walmart. For meats, we raise what we are able to, but we also support our local butcher shop as the meats are more affordable that way. Always a joy watching your family ❤ may God continue blessing you all in 2024.

I'm in Oregon. Shop at WinCo all the time. Because they are cheaper, get a good turnover of products. Mine has an incredible bulk food section. No local butcher.

Y’all are the cutest. I remember shopping while learning to cook as a new bride and with my husband as a newly wed, then with my girls as they were growing up, they loved going every Saturday morning with me to the various stores to get everything, picking out what they wanted to pack in their lunch boxes, and always stopping for a treat on the way home, most of the time it was Dunkin Donuts 🥳🥳, now they are in college and it’s back to just me and my husband grocery shopping usually early on Saturday mornings before it gets crowded, and we usually stop for a treat on the way home, that part hasn’t changed! So glad your husband went with you! A lot of guys just hate grocery shopping - my husband, Ronnie, goes in the stores because it I’d difficult for me - I have to use a wheelchair all the time now - I definitely use the pick up at Walmart! It saves Ronnie from going in the store - I kinda dread it when he goes in for a few things and comes out with several impulse shopping stuff! I shopped on line for Christmas for all but a couple of items - it was great! My daughter’s mother-in-law has a lot of fresh eggs - she gifts me several dozen when she knows my daughter is coming over or we go to her house - my daughter and son-in-law raise cows to be butchered - my daughter gifts me with a lot of fresh ground meat, steaks and roast - the taste is so much better than store bought - my daughter and son-in-law have goats, cows, a donkey to keep stray dogs or any other animal out of the pasture - that donkey will really start braying when anything gets even close to the fence - my daughter’s mother-in-law raises white turkeys to sell - they also have chickens, goats and cows - I have been begging my son-in-law to let me have a peacock that lives in their pasture - so far it has been a no - but, there is a chance in the future I can talk him into it! - all those fresh vegetables looked so good ! ☮

When I have extra bread, or the ends, I use scissors and cut them into small cubes and dry them. I then put them in the freezer and crush them for bread crumbs, or use the cubes to make croutons, or dressing with poultry.

I say so many times that we are blessed that we don't have to worry about being able to pay for groceries. They are CRAZY expensive now. My heart goes out to families who are trying to raise kids, and babies. I know it is so hard for some of them. It was hard for us, too, back in the day when we were really scraping sometimes to take care of ours. We are just so blessed (all of us) and I don't ever want to take that for granted. God is so good to us.

The prices are so high that I don’t get the same pleasure from grocery shopping as I did even two years ago. I think you made some wise choices especially buying the better ground beef. I guess I'm weird, too, because I like grocery shopping. One of my favorite things to do when I traveled was to visit a grocery store, because that tells you more about how regular people there live than visiting monuments and museums. I love seeing products I've never heard of. But I'm not weird enough to enjoy doing laundry.

Nice grocery hall. I usually end up throwing some eggs out because we don’t use that many. I cannot stand egg yolks.
