Being a black man born in the 50s, I never realized that my caucasian cousins had such rough lives until I taught school in Columbus, Ohio. In the 1990s, I had white middle school students whose only dream was to be the first person in their families to graduate from high school. I had thought all caucasians finished high school. As a child and onwards, my perception of whites was Leave It to Beaver, and Father Knows Best and The Brady Bunch. Never in my wildest imagination could I have envisioned lower class caucasians. Old men on the porch in their wife beaters leering at young prepubescent girls walking to scool and with 40 ozs of beer to boot. I didn't know that class of whites existed until I was in my mid 30s. Today, I realize it is not a race thing. The struggle is real for so many. Get educated, be strong, productive and please don't do drugs.

I grew up in a very poor rual area and you sir are right. Poverty crosses all racial lines. My dad had a six grade education and my mother only had a third grade education. But they had survival skills you don't learn in school. I firmly believe that if everyone started life out poor we would have no racial problems.

The dude was so proud to say that he was a high school graduate. To most that’s not a big deal but to people that we’re dealt shitty hands like this young guy, it’s an amazing feat. Being abandoned by his mom and losing his dad in 9th grade is some heavy heavy shit for a guy that age. The emotional burden that puts on you is unimaginable for most. School becomes secondary because I’m sure survival was his goal. The fact that he kept grinding and finished is impressive to me. Hope he’s able to keep grinding and can eventually find success. He’s obviously got potential.

Absolutely this part tore at my heart. I’m from a family where if you don’t get a least a bachelors degree you’re considered “uneducated”. It makes me aware of the privilege I had being from an unbroken home, with a stay at home mom and a dad with a secure job. Some people are just given a handicap from day one through no fault of their own. Getting a high school diploma was probably very hard in his situation and I’m happy for him and I hope he continues his education.

He does have great potential, & he is still young! My Dad was the epitome of fulfilling one's potential! He was a good ole boy from MS who, if you talked to him, seemed like he was just the same as everyone else, yet he ended up getting his PhD, & becoming a highly respected, world renowned scientist in the poultry industry! One of the things he said when I was growing up is that being told you have potential is an insult, bc it means you're not living up to your potential, not succeeding as much as you're capable of. That's always rung true; however, in Zach's case, his potential could've easily been to end up as a junkie just living from fix to fix. Instead, he has held onto that potential, & will likely grow into it in due time. His life has been a bumpy road, so he's quite possibly just enjoying having it smoother now bc he's broken through so many roadblocks already. So, he has great potential, but in due time! Being happy is of the utmost importance, as well, & I think he deserves that w/his son while he's still young! Hope he finds what it is that brings him happiness & a decent paycheck, something he's passionate about that can support his son w/more than essential needs. I think he can, & will, succeed in due time

@Septic Tank bro the comments on these videos are some of the worst ive ever came across. Ive never seen so many Naive Karens' in one place that literally have almost 0 life experience and offer up their "advice" or their fake ass caring comments, etc. And 85% of them are basically the same comment, maybe worded slightly different, on every video. Ignorant ppl dont realize they are ignorant and it can be seen a mile away. Sure, like they always wanna repeat here, "dont judge ppl" (which they do in the same breath) but its actually interesting how much you can sometimes tell about people from a simple little comment of written words. And the mindsets they have are some of the easiest to peg down. I wish there was a way to filter out all the bullshit comments like that so one could easily find the more real/realistic comments from ppl who actually know a lil sumpn about life. Just check a box that removes all comments from middle age women that sit at home on the internet all day who've never faced a struggle in their life. Also, i truly enjoy when these ppl try to crucify me in the comments, maybe its a guilty pleasure, many calle a troll, which is fine, and ignorant too, because i dont consider being real and serious as being a troll, but these days ppl call others "trolls" when they dont agree with them. I just enjoy interjecting a little reality, in a sea full of fake ass ppl

I, too, hope he succeeds! I grew up in NC, & saw many friends waste away, & a lot of ppl didn't make it. I live in WV, I’m a coal miner, I’m a recovering heroin addict, the struggle here is real. Unlike other parts of this beautiful country where you have more wealthy parts and upper middle class parts of a town or city to offput the poverty stricken sections, here.... it’s all poverty. If you aren’t a doctor, nurse, lawyer or a coal miner, it can be very difficult to get ahead. The people here are tough as nails. This place breeds independent, self sufficient, freedom loving Americans and I’m proud to be an Appalachian man and Mountaineer!

That picture of him with his son resonated with me. His son clutched his hands. He held his son in such a comfortable “this is our life” way that changed my heart on him. I genuinely, with all my heart, hope this man keeps his sobriety and takes his son under his wing and teaches him how to do the things differently that he wishes he could have done. Zach, love your son. Keep fighting for him. Don’t let him end up like the friend that changed your life.

Dude. I loved this interview! This gentleman, Zach, is… man, I’m downright so happy for Zach-he’s certainly been added into my mental collection of inspiring humans. I can’t think of a word (nor, do I think it even exists in our American-English language) that defines, to-THE-T, for what I’m abt to say but, here it goes: The word I’d love to have, it’d be a word that means this unique, wonderful, loving, happy feeling that I get, that helplessly just oozes out, when ever I encounter a human being who has done bad things/lived a broken, despairing life, &, they’ve managed to turn their life around-BUT THAT’S A MERE PORTION OF IT-the REAL PART that I LOVE, is when you listen &/or observe THAT said-person of a rough start in life & I can INDUBITABLY believe that the person is speaking genuinely & truthfully & effortlessly b/c this is REALLY the improved & wisened being that he/she has become-LIKE, ZACH! Shit, I forgot what I was … darnit. Sorry for not making too much sense, here. Any who, I’m really glad that I got to watch this interview. I’m so grateful that a person like Soft White Underbelly EXISTS. HE FINDS & SHARES AMAZING & UNIQUE PPL & their stories. This 1 & Shannon’s interview, they, both, went thru tragic, rough upbringings & it’s so inspiring & motivational to ME, the fact that they still never completely forgot abt their humility & LOVE & having genuine, positive hopes & aspirations. Thank you for this interview & for showcasing that there are still lots of wonderful humans out there!

I’ve watched most of your Appalachian series. I want to thank you for your tender approach toward the subjects. As a documentarian, you always come across as falling on the compassionate side of objectivity, which I appreciate. I live in Southern Illinois which is more like North Western Kentucky socially, politically, culturally, economically, and geographically than it is like the rest of Illinois. Many of our locals can trace their roots to Appalachians who travelled and settled here. Our tell-tale accent and vernacular, which is a cross of hillbilly and southern, definitely sets us apart from the rest of the state which sounds more Midwestern. The same problems of poverty, drugs (particularly meth and heroin), lack of opportunities and recreation, and the dwindling coal industry plague our region as well. In recent years, there’s been a lot of effort to develop the region I live in terms of tourism by capitalizing on the beautiful Shawnee National Forest to draw visitors for hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, etc. and many wineries/vineyards have popped up which has brought visitors, money, and pride to the region. So much has changed even in my lifetime. As I watched your series, I was fascinated by how every individual story could have just as easily been told by someone from where I live. However, if that had been the case, it wouldn’t have told the whole story of my region. For every family torn apart by crime and drugs, there’s another who has done well and seems to live in a way that glorifies the beauty of the region. I’m curious if you feel this isn’t the case in Appalachia. Do you feel that the case studies you’ve presented are a universal portrait of life in Appalachia? Or are they anecdotal of just one side of life there? I mean the questions sincerely and not as a critique. I’ve always been interested in Appalachian culture and may fall somewhat on the side of romanticizing the culture. I’ve always admired the food ways, agriculture, self-determinism, unique vocabulary, arts and crafts, living off the land, music, dancing, herbology, traditions, folklore, superstitions, tales and stories, and songs, etc. Knowing the history of how hillbillies were intentionally characterized negatively in past generations in advertising, etc. and also being an avid follower of The Blind Pig and the Acorn blog (Celebrating Appalachia on KZbin), has contributed to my perspective. So, I’m just wondering your thoughts on whether or not the culture there is actually more layered and dynamic than what these interviews reveal? And how would you categorize the layers?
