Oh, so concerning 😮 Please, tell me this was a comedy sketch 😅 Top Hat is an excellent foil to your matter-of-fact nature, you two are hilarious together! Top Hat saying this or that "hardly weighs anything" is classic backpacker denial 😂 we all say that with at least one item in our packs. I retired last month from my career and took a part time sales specialist job with REI, every day I meet people who walk in with the thinking Yop Hat demonstrates-but without his happy demeanor😊 Thanks for the entertainment!

Dont feel bad i have a 3lbs tent. I have the hilleberg anaris tent 600$ tent tho. But its one of the best of the best 👌 but yea you need to get a titanium sporke buddy. And get rid of all thos plastic forks. Now me personally i can live with all the tuna packs and sardines. I love that stuff. Dude the sweet and low is bad for you im just saying. But yea top hat you got a lot of shake down to do.😅

I just did a shakedown with my bf. It was bad. For example, bless him, he brought 3 light sources: a headlamp, a pen light, and an ancient flashlight that takes D batteries. And a replacement battery. I said to him, we can lighten your load by like 4 pounds right now, and he said no. We did our 4 mile hike into the woods and he was miserable. I had a feeling i would need to let hin learn his lesson the hard way when he insisted on buying a 65 litre Osprey despite my objections. Oh well ....

Yup, that one of those choose your battles wisely. Sounds like he was following the 1 is none & 2 is 1 advice but if you're thru hiking for long miles, people make compromises.

The REI Passage tent, the Jetboil stove. It's like he purposely bought the heaviest stuf he could get. It is low cost and REI sells them in low cost bundles with sleeping bag and pad.

Why don't you check your pack? Of course they're gonna take the peanut butter and any toothpaste over 3 oz! And stoves are a definite no-no--I'm amazed you got by with it!

Muuuuultiple reasons: firstly I’ve never ever had a problem with carrying on my stove. So I think they only looked at it this time because of all the other stuff. For this flight I had 39 minutes between my connecting flight. There was no way I was going to check my pack. Also I generally don’t like to check my pack because even when you have a duffle bag to put it in, they don’t care. They throw my pack all over the place. Last time I checked my pack, the duffle bag was completely shredded to pieces. So yeah, now I carryon and send my neck knife and trekking poles ahead.

@@hikingdancer Well, the rules about liquids (which includes viscous liquids like toothpaste and peanut butter) have been in place for decades now! Use travel sized toiletries only (and put them in a plastic baggie, outside of the pack, as the instructions clearly say) and buy the PNB when you get there! I don't mean to be rude, but the TSA rules are pretty well known and there are signs all over every airport in the US. 🙂

@@magicaltrailsI think one would have to live under a rock (or in the woods 😊) to not know TSA liquid guidelines. Sometimes people just forget. I was one of those people. All I thought about when buying the big tube of peanut butter is how much better for the environment it will be instead of the little packets. So I forgot 😉 and once TSA pulled it out of my pack I was like „oh I’m so stupid“ so yeah…. Also I’ve never had a problem with toothpaste. In fact on my flight back they allowed my brand new regular size toothpaste 🤷🏼‍♀️

Flying tip for backpacking: Whenever I fly with my pack and gear, I always buy a cardboard box from Home Depot or Lowes, put my gear inside (including trekking poles), tape it up and check the box instead of carry-on. You can pack up your gear and throw the box away at the airport when you arrive!

These problems must be because you brought your backpack as hand luggage? There are some things you can't bring at all on a flight, camping gas, matches, lighter. You should be able to check in knives and axes for hiking purposes. You might need cord for hanging your food bag, drying clothes, repairing different stuff etc.

This is a great trail for a shakedown hike. It's got campsites every 5 to 8 miles with water and privy. And lets you focus on your gear instead of the high climbs.
