Captain is such a stoic young man! Y'all have certainly raised him the "right" way! And now I know by watching y'all that there just might be a "right " way to raise children! What more could a parent want but for their children to be smart, funny, caring, to have a strong grasp on what they desire for their future and to have emotional intelligence ❤❤❤❤ bravo 👏

There are so many stoic lessons on the trail! The dichotomy of control, voluntary discomfort, getting by with what you have in your backpack, and seeking wisdom. I just read a great quote that exemplifies their World Towning path. “If a man knows not to which port he sails, no wind is favorable."--Seneca His parents have taught him to know where he is going and the discipline to do the things necessary to get there. iBuen CaminoI

Wow, so green and grown out. Must be humid. I can almost feel those cool dewy mornings. Also, cool to see the blazes are maintained. Love seeing the montages of detailed b-roll too. I think Largo could do the whole thing by himself, though I know how hard that would be as a parent. Good thing to think about. Keep on Steppin' guys. -H

I love this! Largo reminds me of our son (who’s now 23). We trusted him early on in his teens and he demonstrated good judgement. And, scouting certainly helped him with this. He always packed his own suitcase (and sometimes forgot stuff 😅). When he was 17, he spent the summer on his own at a Dutch language summer camp with people all older than him. You’ve got to trust your kiddos so they can grow up to be independent adults!

You know him and his abilities better than anyone on here - from the perspective of having watched you both from the beginning of the trail he certainly seems more than capable - no matter what the consensus ends up being in comments - you alone get to parent your child - outside advice can be okay, but you get to make those choices

Empowerment is the word I feel resonates out of the conversation about hiking solo at 16 1/2...staying authentic is one of my favorite things about you and I knew you and Will would have allowed him the option to continue (esp how he and Avalon were independent on the Camino and in other countries on busses and trains for solo experiences).😻 Hugs

Captain would have no problem hiking alone. Many Tubers, especially women, post their videos a couple of weeks after they recorded so that no one knows exactly where they are. Too bad you missed the sunset from Rice Field shelter. It's one of the best I experienced on the trail.

I have wanted to leave you a comment ever since I discovered you. I have been watching vlogs of the AT hikers for about 3 years and you are the BEST!!! The info you give and the positivity cannot be beat. I also admire the way you have taught your children to be so worldly. Why didn't I do this 40 years ago? I do have a couple questions. You hike in tanks and shorts. Are you not concerned about ticks? Or what are you doing to prevent them? PS. I enjoy your family so much I went back and watched your Camino. I was also so disappointed that I was unable to come to Trail Days to meet you--I was going to attend but family obligations happened. Best wishes I can't wait to summit with you.

Go Captain,go! Based on what you and Sunshine have posted, you are more than up to going it on your own. Even better if you agree a budget in advance and have to stick to it barring emergencies. I reckon that you would make a lot of memories and finish even more mature than you are now. I did my first trip without my parents when I was 14 but that was in the 1970s.

The Crawford family (oldest 17 youngest 4) hiked the trail and someone actually called child protective services on them. They as a family worked together, each had a responsibility. Hiked thru blizzard and slept in a bathroom at one point. Vlogged entire hike and wrote a book. At the end of hike ATC would not let youngest Rainer hike to summit. Said it was too dangerous. This family ran marathons together and even left trail to run one and returned. The hiking community was so outraged the made a makeshift sign for them as they decided as a family if not everyone could summit, none of them would. Look up their vlogs or book “ 1,000 steps” came back after trail and did trail magic as a family. Lots of cool stories from the trail. Been watching for a while.

You (general, plural you - not you-you) give 16 year old people drivers licenses- and allow them into traffic on their own. But you have issues with sending them out in nature on their own? 🤭 (just fyi - age for drivers license is 18 where I live, and I would personally have no problem allowing a _capable_ 16yo to hike a couple of days on their own 🙂)

I love the idea that Largo might be able to do this on his own! But I would hope there would be more trust to let him go a week or more alone. To have the deep AT experience, IMO, it's not having someone bring you real food and sleeping in a car. I know, I know, "hike your own hike" and all but really...one of the deep experiences is being alone. Figuring things out, meeting people, seeing what you're made of. It's not the same if you get food brought to you and a car to sleep in. Part of the AT is doing the hard stuff to see if you can. You say you have service quite often so with a beacon you'll keep an eye on him every second. There's no doubt he can do it. Watch "Maidentrip" a movie about Laura Dekker who circumnavigated the globe alone before she was 16. Don't go hold his hand. He can do it. And he should vlog! Of course it won't be real time, but it would be a rich experience to remember. Self edit. Let it be raw and real. He can drop the footage when he has enough connection. A mom and her 10 y/o were hiking this year and mom did it herself. Lots of hikers do. It doesn't have to be a production...it can be 10-12 min. Keep it simple. I'm excited for him if he goes alone, but actually I'm hoping not simply because I want it to be a mom/kid thing❤
