My Mom born in 1919, so she lived through the depression at age 10 and the WWII rationing as an young adult. She called her "prepper" pantry items "staples". She had a pantry well stocked with staples. Never mattered who.popped in at dinner time, Mom had it covered. Miss her every day.

Veteran Prepper here. I could go on forever on this topic listing things you need for your prepper pantry. But here are two that popped to mind right away: 1. How to books. Get books or print off the internet now while we still have it, information on how to survive without power, grocery stores and etc. Such as do you know how to quickly put together a composting toilet to take care of your family’s waste needs? Do you know how to catch wild yeast from the air so you can make your own bread in the event you’re out of store bought yeast and can’t go to the store? Do you know what “weeds” in your area that are edible and actually nutritious (or toxic)?Things along this line. This could be a long list but you get the idea. Get books! 2. Long term solutions to feminine hygiene needs. In addition to storing up as much disposable products as possible, get the washable cloth pads and menstrual cup type products. Amazon has both. I know it may be squeamish at first and the teenagers aren’t going to like it, but when you run out of disposable products you’ll be glad you have these items. Good luck everyone! If you’re new to this way of life, keep researching and never give up ♥️

There is one thing that I very seldom see mentioned. If you live in a place like an apartment you need to have a stash of food that takes very little water and cooks quickly. Have canned goods and instant food (potato flakes, instant rice, etc) and use the liquid from the canned food instead of water to cook the instant food.

Cream of tartar- mixed with baking soda makes baking powder. Stored separate they don't expire, but store bought baking powder does expire.

My tip: Adults and kids need to get over all this "I don't eat that" (within reason). Too many parents are raising these kids to think they should get special meals. Too many adults have become pretentious because they watch Food Network all the time. Learn to live with lower expectations.

I have a tip that may help someone .this was a mistake I made I learned the hard way .if you’re going to seal items like flour cornstarch, sugar ,brown sugar ,powdered items in a Mason jar, after you fill the jar wipe the rim of the jar with a dry paper towel, tear that paper towel in half, fold it into a square then slip it down inside the jar on top of the contents, then put the lid on and then seal because that prevents the contents from getting sucked up under the lid as your sealing. If you don’t do it you will think that your jars are sealed and when you go back a week later to check on them the seal will have broke.. 👍😃

Our wake up call was last February when TX power grid shut down and our house dropped down to 45 degrees on the inside of the actual house. We were not prepared. I had my prepped pantry but emergency winter supplies-nope, generator-nope…just a whole bunch of stuff we should have had- nope, nope and nope. We’re ready now.

Hi Patara. On the day that Russia invaded Afghanistan i heard the still small voice tell me to prepare. My 25 lb. pail of honey, the hundreds of canning jars and the trunk full of socks were a source of teasing for years. My kids were babies then and are now in their 30s and 40s. What was a joke then is now what is strengthening my family and has given us a solid footing over the past few years. You and your family are a blessing and an inspiration to many people. Stay strong and God bless.

What I find interesting about these lists is that, growing up on a farm, I thought everyone had a pantry with those things. We used to get snowed in and couldn't get to town for a week or so and Mom was prepared for anything. I thank God for my childhood!

I've started freezing beaten eggs...I beat 6 in a bowl then pour them into a sandwich baggie, freeze it flat then stack them in gallon bags for shor term (1-3 months) for longer term I'll just place the unfrozen bags into a food saver and seal it up. To use I'll add a lil water or milk to defrosted eggs. Cooks/bakes up like a champ!

I'd recommend a tea collection. I have over 20 boxes, my goal is 40. It's a moral booster, body warmer, & if you're rationing food tea can replace a meal and make you feel full.

I was taught to cook when I was really little. I can remember standing on a stool over a coal and wood cook stove, while Mom or Grandma held the back of my shirt to keep me from falling into the stove. By the time I was 8 or 9 I could put a simple meal on the table by myself. By the time I was 12 I could can most things. I am so glad now that I had this education. They taught me to can whatever you could because the next year there may not be any. They taught me to always have staples "just in case". Basic supplies to sustain life for a while if need be. They didn't call it prepping, it was just a way of life. My husband and continue to raise a garden, can and put stuff away " just in case". One of the funniest and saddest questions about my canning was "what do you do with all that stuff you can"? My simple answer was. We eat it. And they said....."Really?"

I was at my local distribution store and they have very little on the shelves. I asked the manager to order me in some cases of needed bakery items He sold me some he had stashed in the back. He told me he couldn’t guarantee that he would be getting anymore supplies in for the holidays so he was trying to stretch them out as long as he could. He said it would be wise to buy what I needed now for the rest of the year. People didn’t believe me until I showed them the video I took of the empty/compacted shelves.

I just love how you present things Patera. 3 points I loved, I'll elaborate on some for anxious prone-mommies like me, #1 DIVERSIFY! ☝YES, Yes, yes GIRL! #2 Convienience & Comfort!! When real tragedy hits; hard times, illness, weather, job loss, NOT JUST DOOMSDAY...etc., to have a small comfort item like a nice tea, instant coffee, canned soup, ect... you can just breathe and take a second to let go of just one thing. If not, burn out is so very likely. #3 Connections/Community. I am a list maker. To write it down eases my mind. So this is for those who like crossing things off your lists. Sometimes writing down who you could call on for specific things helps. If you notice a huge gap like, "I don't know any nurses, mechanics, someone good with numbers, a trade jack, someone who would pray w/ or for me, someone i would trust my kids with, ect. Then, PUT THAT ON THE TO DO LIST! Find your people. If you can't access your assets and resources, are they really assets? Years ago, I was a single mom with 2 little ones. I had a small stockpile, but that's it. A hurricane hit and devastated our community. Actually 2 within 6 months of each other. I needed my community! Even more than my food at times. I needed a cup of (instant) coffee, someone to be in prayer, ect. Everything was destroyed! I didn't know how to work a chainsaw, nor did I have the muscle to clear trees alone, but I had a stockpile of meat & food and I wasn't afraid to reach out to my community, my people. I ran my smoker for days while my neighbors and I cleared away mountains of debris. We had each others backs. And their bellies stayed full. Even after the food was weeks past spoiled. One less thing. But i had to come up with these elaborate plans in the midst of total chaos, babies crying, no sleep, overwhelming stress, filth, discomfort, and exhaustion like it's never experienced (not even childbirth compared). It was very hard. I traded my skills and my supplies to get back to something somewhat resembling "manageable". Even trade? I don’t know, but we all ate, slept, cleaned, and fought our way through things. Something else I learned was, that courage was rare. People just suffered and cried. They were more than willing to help and trade because of my mentality. Not that I'm anything special or that I had my stuff "together", I didn't. But most folks don't think like this. They are willing to drive into town, less than 1/2 a tank of gas, and have a gunned showdown for a freaking loaf of bread. Foolish. Or they sit and wait for the government to show up and pass out rations. It was 3 weeks before I had power or water. No trucks came, no food, no gas, no Red Cross, no nothing. It was 26 months until the debris was cleared. The filth, the bugs, the illness, the crazy stuff you don't think of until you're in it. Having the stamina to make it through. Hate to be blunt but, no suit is coming. Try to think ahead and save as much of yourself as you can. I'm not complaining. I made it just fine, so did my children. But it forced me to think about how to prep in a different way. It made me see that every house has its own needs. The basics are great, they are essential for a reason, but you have to think deeper if you want to be playing offense vs defense. Diversify, Comfort/Convenience, & Community. Glad y'all are better. God bless you for the tenacity to educate us and share your life. You are a match that lights the fire in so many of us. 🔥

I got very ill from Covid. I struggled to walk 15 feet to the restroom. My pulseox would drop into the 80's. I was vaccinated, I'm 40, I have asthma. One of the nurses at the ER told me to get up and walk even if I can only go 10 feet. He also told me to take deep breathes and try to hold it as long as I could. At first I couldn't even hold it while I counted to 2. My husband and the 4 kids (all unvaccinated) had minor symptoms. I was sick for about a month but 6 weeks later I'm back to normal.

When my children were born, my mom told me we could use evaporated milk along with 1 tbls. Karo syrup with 1 can of water will make formula. In my children's day formula was new, it was hard to find. Also what if your baby could only drink one kind this might help. Also disposable diapers was new, my children wore cloth diapers with rubber pants. We lived in Germany for 2 years. My husband would be gone so I hand washed many diapers and put them on a clothes line. We never know what might be necessary. This was in the seventies. Much luck to anyone. Oh also large pins to put the diapers on. Shirley

Hope you folks feel better soon! I’d like to add oil lamps & kerosene for light. Candles are fine for temporary issues but oil lamps will light up the whole house with a few scattered around. Oil for these is costly so I use kerosene. If you don’t like the smell, Lehman’s sells a brand that doesn’t smell as bad-depends on cost! You can crack a window🤣 The Amish & my grands did this for yrs! Love my old oil lamps💖

Hi there: I could have posted this on any of your post but since this was the newest one here goes. I have just this year found you on here and may I say, you are a blessing to a lot of people including me. We moved from the city 26 years ago to the country which was definitely a culture shock. Hubby and I was raised up not having much (don’t like the word poor) so our parents taught us how to live off the land. We gardened, canned, I sewed, made everything we could. Then one day the farmers started using airplanes to foliate their crops. There went our gardens and everything we planted. It was a lot of hard work as you know and got expensive. We spent over $30 one year for blackberry plants and everyone died. We have gotten old and bad health to move elsewhere so we do what we can. I just felt like a need to share this with you because you are me in the “young” 😉 and it blesses my heart to watch your videos. Keep up the great work and be blessed my dear. Oh, BTW, I was born in Tennessee and will always be a Tennessee girl even though we live in another state. ❤️

My 2 cents: 1) ask your dr for 90 day prescriptions instead of 30 days 2) Bump up dental visits if possible 3) Keep your gas tanks topped off 4) As you go through your day for the next week, think about everything you use. Think ‘If I didn’t have this and couldn’t replace it, how would that affect my life?’ This gives a whole new meaning to everyday items like scissors, nail clippers, coat, sneakers, shovel, etc. One is none, Two is one and so on

I remember my dad telling me how my grandfather always had chocolate 🍫 around. He was from Belgium and at 4 years old was removed from his home. The German soldier escorting them offered him chocolate. A horrible situation turned into a positive memory over a simple piece of candy. Have some chocolate and candy in your preps especially if you have kid's. There's a reason why MREs include them.

I have been prepping best i can for my house of 5 hefty appetite people. Feels like I am fighting a losing battle. I got teased by friends a few years ago because I made my own pickles, and they literally said, "Why would you make it when you can buy it at the store?" I dropped that friend very shortly after, because I knew I wouldn't always be able to just run to the store. Most of the big items are already stocked in my pantry, and I wrote down every item on your list. I have been trying to get my mom to see reason, why i want to grow most of our food, why do i want to grow things that one or two people in my house can't or won't eat. Because someone will need it. Thank you!

My suggestion is to buy a 50# bag of self rising flour along with 25# bag of all purpose. Use that self rising to make biscuits! You can use powered milk or even water to make a quick pan of biscuits that can help fill up the hungriest of crowds. My mom made biscuits every day. Save your all purpose for rising loaf bread, pie crusts, cakes etc. Add some jams and jelly’s to that list as well. Make your own if you can, if not buy some. A hot biscuit and teaspoon of jam hits the spot when you want something sweet but can’t go out.

Ok, here is mine, I know people don't like to hear "I don't like.." lower your expectations, right? Well, sorry, I don't like cooked spinach or kale. So I went out and bought spinach and kale in the produce department (I also have these starting in the fall/winter garden)-I am dehydrating them and going to powder them. Also a great way to get them into the kids diets. I am starting microgreens inside for me and fodder for the chickens and rabbits (I am putting seeds and grains back for both of these). My last tip that I learned is that bleach expires! WHAAA?? 60 years old and never knew this. So, stock pool shock. Google it and how to mix to make bleach and how much to use to purify water. Save and print a hard copy of these instructions, keep it in your prepper pamplet. Prayers for you and your family, Patara. Take care of yourself so you can take care of your family!

Peanut butter now comes in powder form. Yep, getting that stocked is like stocking up on nuts. Less oily, and gives you the ability to stock it for a year. I freeze my flour in a freezer ziplock bag so as to have it available for baking. It lasts longer and stays fresh for when needed without bugs. Don't forget freezer bags and rubber bands. YES, rubber bands are helpful when you don't have zip ties. Maxi pads to keep you from bleeding (learned that from starry hilder). Small medical bag, and some tweezers, scissors, and sewing kit. Never know when it will be handy for you.

I saw the title of this video and grabbed a pen and paper before hitting play. 😉 About potatoes. Back in August I was introduced to golden fried hashbrowns, which is essentially dehydrated potato shreds that taste shockingly amazing. After stocking up on these, I found tutorials online on how to dehydrate potatoes. It's amazing! Mashed potatoes, cubed potatoes, shredded potatoes... if your on a budget and have the time, this is the way to go. For Mashed, I peeled and boiled the potatoes with a touch of white vinegar, then whipped them in my mixer till fluffy. Add the the potato water instead of your milks or fats. Spread them thin in the dehydrator. I find my coffee grinder works best for grinding the dehydrated sheets into powder. For cubed, peeled and evenly cube the potatoes. You want to boil them in the water, with a touch of vinegar, until they are just barely fork tender. These rehydrate well in soups. They are not instant to rehydrate though, so keep the pieces small and be patient. Shredded is much the same. I use my cheese shredder to shred the peeled potatoes into cold water. Then I strain them and par boil them for about 2 is minutes. Important: remove all the peel and bad spots beforehand for a nicer product. Also, make sure your potatoes are good and hard and crunchy before storing to make sure they are truly dry. Good to see your doing fairly well Patara.

Great video! Also, not food related but when you're out and about- if you see a goodwill or a garage sale you should stop and look for clothing and shoes for your kids (get the next few sizes- a variety of all things< coats, pants, shirts, sweaters, etc>) also look for blankets and good durable cookware! No need to buy these things at full price- get them used, wash them and put them in storage!

Just an idea from people who freeze food. Use empty plastic bottles from juice or milk etc to fill with water and then freeze them, use this to keep the empty space in your freezer full. The same amount of energy that is required to freeze the water is needed to thaw it. This might help preserve your food a bit longer in an event of a blackout on a hot day in particular.

Popcorn Kernals - you can grind them in a normal blender, then make: corn bread, Johnny cakes(pancakes out of ground corn), grits for breakfast....store in containers with oxygen absorbers if you can get them...if not they will still last most likely forever, just will lose some flavor over time...

I guess you could call me an elder, I'm 58. My husband and I raised 6 of our own kids and took in 3 others. As you know there are always more that show up after school and the weekends. Being able to afford to feed this many and also have food supplies ready is extremely important. When considering your grocery items, purchase what is really needed. Items to make your meals nutritious and tasty. If you do this, you will save $ for the other things that you find you might want to purchase down the line. Purchasing items like Soda, Chips and frozen remade meals are not cost effective. Another thing, have printed cookbooks. So many times in our "electronic" society we just run to Pinterest or a file on our laptop. Can you cook without them or do you need a recipe? I hope we don't get to the point of this being a common problem, but one never knows.

Great list and am so very happy that out of the list, only thing I don't have is Tang. You are right..no one thinks of this. I remember back in the 60s, my brother and I always added tang to our ice tea. We thought it was the best. The other thing I do is whenever we empty a white vinegar jug, we leave about 1/4 inch of vinegar in bottle. Then we fill up with water and label dishwater and stick back. This has helped us through hurricanes and other storms. Our laundry bottles we do the same as who cares what soap we are using ...and with those, we can also use for hand soap if needed. Or cleaning up our handicapped dog of 12 years. For drinking water we pick up gallons of pH balanced water for drinking. Have even found at dollar Tree. Then we have our cases of other water to drink or whatever with. So looking at this list, feel we are in pretty good shape...but by no means does it mean we are stopping. Oh. The other thing we have...not just jars of peanut butter,, but peanut butter powder.. not that we like so much,, but for long term.. A'ho.

Just something extra I do. For fruit, desserts I buy the Walmart brand pie fillings. They are excellent and FULL of fruit. You can use them for the pies, on cakes or marbled in the cake, warmed on ice cream, make a cobbler (I buy the Louisiana Cobbler Mix), puddings and cheesecakes. I bought quite a few of the Jell-O no bake cheesecake mixes. You can top them with pie filling. Great way to get fruit and have dessert! It's that little extra somethin'-somethin' you need to give some comfort in hard times.

good morning. I have come to think of you as a friend. I am praying that you and family will have a full and quick recovery. I have a suggestion/request:. I think it would be beneficial to keep a notebook of vital information, in case internet is not available for an extended time. My notebook will contain things like: instructions for the rocket stove, at home prevention/ treatment of various illnesses, canning instructions and tips, and all instructions I can think of that are not familiar to me. many people would need to include lots of instructions for cooking. So I am asking/hoping that you will do a video on this idea and include a list of links that can be copied and saved. I know it is asking a lot! But I believe this could be an important part of our preps. Thank you for all you do, and God bless.

Thank you for doing this especially since you're not feeling 100%. This reminder is so appropriate at this time of rising food prices. I'd add to the canned tuna - salmon, ham & chicken. To the veggies - canned sweet potatoes, beets if you can find them. Nuts in individual packages if you can afford them - easier to portion out and shelf life is longer. Oatmeal to use as cereal, a meat extender, and thickener for soups and stews. I'd also add packaged dry mixes for beef, turkey, chicken and white gravy. And in the spice category - add the blends like taco, 5 spice Chinese, curry, poultry, Italian - simpler to have on hand than multiple spices. I'm starting to fill in my "hurricane" pantry, didn't have any this year so used some up. First items are the Campbell's Chunky soups - they are so good and filling. I grow sprouts and reuse the water from soaking and rinsing as I would any water. The soak water from beans I use on my container plantings. I try really hard not to waste any food.

Couple of my old school hints.1. Save the fat off any meat and use it instead of oil. 2.when making a recipe, put aside a tablespoon or whatever amount makes sense to you for the dog. 3. Also set a bit aside for the end of the week soup. 4. Ginger is a good spice for flavor and medicine. 5. If diabetis is an issue like it is for us, don't neglect sugar. It has many uses. Thank you so much for putting out so much important information.

Hello Patara, You & James have been in my prayers. Thank you for taking the time to go over your list. I grabbed what is now becoming prepper advice I have one Chinese homemade hydroxchloroquine. After i list out this simple recipe, I want to ask you a question. Recipe for (HCQ): 3 each of organic lemons and grapefruit. Clean the outside peels (whole lemons & grapefruits) by running water and rubbing clean, then oat dry. You will only need the peels. Peel all 6 fruit & cut peels into approx 1.5 to 2 in. Put peels into a pot that will fit lid on. Add approximately 3 cups of water, but enough to cover peels. Bring to a boil, as soon as it begins turn down to simmer. Simmer for 3 hrs w/lid on. After 3 hrs, don’t remove lid. Let it cool down with lid on to keep quinine in the tonic. Strain the peels from the tonic. Pour into a clean glass jar & keep in the fridge. Drink cool tonic. The recipe didn’t indicate how much to drink or how often. Since the recipe for this came on after your video, I wanted to share it with you.

I'm at the part where your talking about salt and pepper and I paused to add in that black pepper aids in digestion by helping to stimulate hydrochloric acid. They recommend adding ground pepper to all your dishes, not a large amount but around 1/8 to 1/4 tsp., so make sure you have a good stock of it.

For keeping kids calm. Snacks they are use to grabbing like veggie sticks, 100 % juices, hard candy, like jolly ranchers. For moms we need our chocolate. I prefer milk chocolate but I know dark chocolate is “ better” for me. And good old cookbooks such as joy of cooking, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury cookbooks have excellent ideas on how to reuse left-overs into another slightly different meal. Even in tough times a variety of food options keep a happier family in a happier mood.

Applesauce is good to have on hand, it also helps stop diarrhea. The kind with cinnamon is tasty when chilled and cinnamon has anti bug properties. It sure helped us when we were sick we lived on grilled cheese canned soup and applesauce. We were too sick to make anything complicated, really bad off and had no outside help. Sue.... prayers for you and your family🌜Get lots of rest.

Also, just because Ive been doing this for a while, doesn't mean I can't learn something from the newbie stuff. Tip for buying marinara sauce. I look for brands packed in mason jars as I can reuse the jars and the price I paid for the sauce oays back in a reusable jar. I also save the one piece lids, once I open a sealed jar I out a clean one piece lid on the jar (if there are leftovers)

I've heard green coffee beans store for a really long time. Roast them in a frying pan(or other method) and use a hand grinder. Great list!! I recently made a few batches of elderberry syrup and dehydrated the leftover cooked berries for use in tea. Keep your husband sitting and moving as much as possible, it reduces the risk of pulmonary problems.
