Personal opinion, but I think that people are saying that eyeshadow is out of style and clean makeup is in, because they don’t know how to do makeup. You’d be surprised by how many people physically can’t do a winged liner, cut crease, or even blend out their contour without it looking muddy. I think that lack of high attention spans is causing people to not want to take the time to learn techniques or pick up an actual skill anymore, so it’s easier for them to just say, “It’s out of style.”

I wholeheartedly agree to this. The rise of fast speed content has made it so people don’t hone any skill. Makeup is a skill. I don’t just see this in the beauty space either. I see it online in book groups. People can’t even finish a book, if they are not drawn in, in the first 5 pages. Another example is the “girl dinner trend” yuck! Learn how to enjoy a real meal and maybe preparing it. I am so glad I grew up when I did. Also proud to have true skills in life!

The photos referenced when saying there is no eyeshadow by some tiktokers, are definitely wearing eyeshadow, it's just neutrals or only 1 or 2 colors. They do not have bare eyelids. We did the "clean girl" thing last summer, or every summer lol. Do what you want and what makes you feel good, noone dictates what's for who. So sick of the agist crap and random people making up trends for views. Also, calling women in their 30s and 40s old ladies is gross and just perpetuates societal criticism of women beyond objects.

I think that article came a few years late. Back in 2020/2021 when the fox eye and the clean girl trend was all the rage it would have made more sense, but the more recent trends like latte makeup and mob wife makeup put more emphasis on eyeshadow and it seems like slowly the more dramatic makeup is making a come back.

I've noticed this for a while. A lot of my favorite beauty influencers have started wearing less eyeshadow than before, and some don't even wear it at all anymore. In the mid 90’s when I very started wearing makeup, we just wore powder, eyeliner and lip balm. Then I’m high school we added a cool toned eyeshadow, foundation, concealer and mascara. We never wore blush! We called blush “old lady”.

I actually do that alot. a near skin toned eyeshadow around teh edges and crese, a shimmer in the center and a simple black eyeliner to finish it off. Curl the lashes and were off.

YES this is why I love the NYX Buttermelt Bronzer, it's exactly that and the formula is amazing so I can use that as my only product if I want to go really simple but enhanced. It has a good deal of shimmer (wish they also had it in matte tho) and it's cool/rosy. A lot of people can get perfect results from any powder bronzer (if warm tones suit them.) I rarely use bronzers for bronzing lol

@@tharzanne on that note we are the exact opposite. When i first started using makeup,i began with my eyes (eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara and concealer) and lipstick. I did that for 7 years before i bought my first foundation and other face products. I could go out with only eyeshadow (comples look or only 1 color paired with an eyeliner) but i could never go out with only face products and eyelids empty. I would feel naked😅

I use it in place of foundation if I want to tan more and put powder foundation on top. Sometimes I mix it with foundation, but the only reason I wear foundation at all is because fake tan doesn't stay on as well as foundation.

Marilyn Monroe used a thin layer of vasaline aa essentially a primer, since she had very dry skin. I wanna say another star from the 50s used calamine(or some type of "drying lotion" like that) on her T zone. As far as the MUAs I know, they used things to help makeup longevity but they weren't necessarily called primers.

Totally get the sometimes “more is more” statement. If I am wearing a very bold earring and a very soft, barely-there makeup look then the earrings can seem out of balance. If you add some lipstick and lashes then the earrings will complete the look, not overwhelm it. And I think feeling pretty will never be dated, so wear all the shadow! I think women (of any age) calling other women “old ladies” is dated!

Eyeshadow is definitely not 100% out even if it’s not as “important” in social media. I think it’s hella cool that there are more diverse styles that are making it to the mainstream. I always love seeing cool looks from others, and like doing them myself.

I'm Gen X anyway, so whatever. Ever since I started wearing makeup, I've always liked to play up my eyes. The only way I see myself not wearing shadow is if my already hooded lids get more baggy. I just think I look plain without at least a single shadow. That new palette instantly tempted me, but I had to stop and remember I already have two palettes that has most of those colors.

I think people should wear whatever makes them happy!…. Stopped wearing eyeshadow earlier this year due to allergies ruining my look(my eyes run in the tear duct area). With my maturing eyelids, I feel very satisfied without it. I still wear mascara and falsies. I love how I look, and appreciate the time saver!

I didn’t think low rise jeans would come back, yet here they are. The makeup from 2016 will come back sooner than we think. For some, it never ended. I actually wasn’t in the beauty community back then and was unaware of that makeup trend until years later. As someone with oily skin, I can appreciate the layers of base makeup! Otherwise it will never last on me

Tbh I think eyeshadow is actually coming back. It’s been kinda out for a while now, thanks to the “clean girl” trend but that’s not really as big of a thing anymore and the 2016 makeup style has started to come back in a big way instead, and I believe eyeshadow will tag along with that trend. It’s also so funny to me when publications are like “eyeshadows are out” and in their example images of current trends every single person is wearing eyeshadow. Maybe not overly noticable eyeshadow looks a la 2016 but it’s still clearly there. I also think mainstream brands are focusing more on complexion because people don’t really look to mainstream brands for eyeshadows anymore, hence why they aren’t as profitable anymore. I feel like indies have taken over the eyeshadow market, they’re producing eyeshadow at a higher rate than ever before and still sell out easily. Clearly the market is there.

The only thing I’ll say is different for me is I’m more of a one shadow or shimmer girl now, and mono looks are my fav. I haven’t went a day in years without seeing falsies so I don’t know about that😂😂

I am one of these old ladies here. I have to admit that I am not wearing full glam these days. That was a phase a when I found You Tube back in 2017/2018. It was really fun following all the tutorials. Now I skip makeup all together or go really minimal. I am not opposed to using makeup, though. Both looks are gorgeous. ❤

I went from the 70s natural look to the 80s full on face. Gloss to bullets in fuchsia and burgundy. One shade on the lids to a big smoky eye. The faintest flush to the fuchsia slash. Trends don't bother me any more.

I’ve been seeing a lot of neutral tones and palettes come in, and I’m loving it. Especially the cool toned neutrals. I think it’s been a way for all of us to learn more about techniques and go back to the basics of how different shadow placement can really change your whole eyeshape. I don’t think eyeshadow will completely go out either. I haven’t been wearing much makeup in the spring due to my allergies lol, but once summer rolls around, I’m excited to pull out the colored shadow eyeliner and bright/pastel eyeshadow!

I like watching the trends, and then basically doing what I want 😂 Picking and choosing what works for me and makes me feel great. At the end of the day, makeup is fun for me - and I want it to stay that way! I like beauty subscription boxes. It’s a relatively inexpensive monthly “treat” that lets me try new things and get my “fix”. I used to have a BoxyCharm subscription, but I ended up cancelling it because of the excessive amount of eyeshadow palettes and a lot of mascara. I don’t do enough eyeshadow looks to be able to justify owning so many eyeshadow palettes. If I wear eyeshadow at all, it’s a wash of color on the lid, or I use an eyeshadow as an eyeliner. I currently have a Scentbird subscription and an Allure Beauty Box subscription which better suits where I’m at in terms of the things I gravitate toward now - it’s a bit more focused on skincare, haircare and body care. There is still some makeup, but not an excess amount of eyeshadow palettes.

I've been doing the one and done or duo shadow looks probably since before covid, it's nice to do a highlighter shade on the lid and maybe something in the crease with some mascara so much faster, and I'm definitely not doing on the lid eyeliner, my 44 yr old eyes are making it harder to see where to place it anyway 😅

I almost entirely stopped messing w/ upper lid eyeliner after high school, lmao. I have hooded eyes, so it was barely visible, & it took up so much extra time that I could have been devoting to other steps in my routine. The waterline is non-negotiable, tho!!

I don't think I've worn less eyeshadow since the height of ABH and indie brands, but I definitely change up colors and styles every few years - graphic eyeliner in rainbow colors, one-and-done cool tones, igari and grungy tones and reds, clean girl creams in pastels, and now lots of aegyo-sal and soft eyeshadow looks with periwinkles and mints. Blush has replaced contour, but I wear it as contour half the time anyway. My routine was only ever super complicated because my boss forced heavy makeup at work in 2016. But even then, my weekends looked like a one-and-done from a Nyx cool-toned eyeshadow palette or Urban Decay Gash single, drugstore eyeliners, and maybe a Covergirl green color corrector or Urban decay blurring primer and foundation when I felt insecure about my skin. (That primer wasn't a frivolous step - that thing color corrected and blurred and still looked great by itself. RIP, Self-Adjusting Complexion Primer and everything else good from UD.)

Styles naturally change, usually from one extreme to the other. This seems like a natural evolution from the very dramatic, constructed shadow looks with huge lashes and flicked liner to something simpler that is more forgiving and easier to do. I love one-and-done eyeshadows for myself. I'm religious about sunscreen these days, and swiping on a single, dimensional shadow over it is perfect for me most days. Everything comes back around, and we're not obligated to follow trends at all. I suspect a bit of it is a response to the conspicuous consumption of haul and "decluttering" videos. Clean, simple looks that enhance my eyes, take a few minutes, and don't break the bank are right up my street these days.

This is so funny because I have been so into eyeshadow…so much so in fact that I have been wetting my brush and swirling it in deep crazy colors…one per day…so one and done …but applying them deeply and darkly…also using mascara and brow gel and a natural color liquid lip…this has been my go to… no face products! I think it depends where you are in the world. I don't see many people wearing eyeshadow in the west but its still very much a thing amongst young people in East Asia. Granted, the shadows are sheer and natural with an emphasis on glittery shadow toppers.
