Shortly after this all happened, he came into my store looking for another emerald, asking assenine queations, about a female we had available, asked if she was treated for crypto, and all sorts of other off the walls questions! Any breeder reading this please avoid dealing with john marshall

@NewEnglandReptile yes unfortunately we had the displeasure of dealing with him in person, he was offered an adult female for a more than reasonable price and then told us he and his wife have decided to invest in a pair of basins, we attempted many of times to assist him in anyway and he either ignored what we told him or told us he knew what he was doing

I work in a pet store, and 7 years ago someone adopted a ball python from us and returned it a month later claiming it had Crypto. They even went as far as claiming they took him to a vet and the vet diagnosed him with Crypto. The poor thing was severely dehydrated and had stuck shed all over. We knew it wasn't crypto because 1) none of our other animals were affected and 2) the snake left the store in healthy condition after meeting all required milestones in terms of weight, feedings, poops, and sheds. We're pretty sure they just put him in one of those stupid "starter kits" that our competitor pet store sells and likely Googled "snake sicknesses" when he refused to eat the first time they offered food and latched onto crypto for whatever reason. Keep in mind, this is a ball python. They are NOTORIOUS for refusing food under even the slightest amount of stress. And this one was a young juvenile who had just been moved from store to inappropriate husbandry. 🙃 of course he'd refuse food. We discovered later that he had also begun to develop a wobble, as he is a bumblebee Morph, and that affects his feeding response. Anyway I adopted him and it's been 7 years since his crypto "diagnosis" and he's still just vibin in his bioactive terrarium. He's a derp with zero brain cells but I'm pretty sure crypto had nothing to do with that 😂

I was just researching ball python care, for a while now I've been thinking about getting one, but it won't be for a long while out, it's nothing I want to rush into b/c I've never kept a reptile before. Anyways, I was reading that ball pythons are pretty chill about stress and are good beginner snakes, ofc as long as they are properly cared for, so hearing you say they're sensitive to stress makes me wonder if I'm getting accurate info. If they're not stressed, are they good about eating? My biggest concern about keeping a snake is it refusing to eat.
@kelstiel8714
@kelstiel8714 Жыл бұрын
@pandap4ntz in my experience its highly dependant on the individual snake, but in GENERAL yeah, I'd say ball pythons are easily stressed and refuse food often. That's not to say a beginner wouldn't be able to have a ball python, because they are reasonably hardy as well as generally handle-able and not overly huge. You may want to also research corn snakes or king snakes as well though, as those are often also beginner friendly snakes!

I have a snake from NERD. He is a wonderful and healthy animal. When I first received him, a few years ago, I asked the enclosure size he was kept in. So, instead of putting him immediately into the cage I had bought for him (which was three sizes bigger than the animal was used too), I adjusted my set up to a smaller one that was closer to the same size he was used to. Over the course of a few weeks, he ate a couple of times...and then I moved him into the bigger set up. No issues. This guy has brain worms.

From MY experience as a former snake owner, I wouldn't trust John with a house cat. He clearly doesn't know how to properly handle, and care for a snake. Furthermore, I find it very sus that he mentioned the disease PRIOR to the conclusion of this transaction. Therefore, any attorney, or just people with common sense, can see he is deliberately angling for a payday. Guilty pig always squeals.

Agreed completely! The fact that he suspected she had such a voracious disease and never took her in to see a professional, or warned NERD that he suspected she had it when he shipped her back, tells me all I need to know about the type of person he is. Obv she doesn't have it, but still, sending an animal with a voracious disease to known breeders without any sliver of warning could have potentially been a death sentence for their entire business if they weren't as educated as NERD. It's a really good thing they are warning breeders about this guy!

If there’s one thing I’ve learn I’m my time keeping fish, cats and dogs (not allowed to have reptiles sadly) it’s that you NEVER get your care information from a single source. Research, research research! Gather data from all over and pay attention to what’s credible and what isn’t. If one source is saying something vastly different from all the others, take it with a grain of salt because there’s a good chance it’s misinformation. Fish especially taught me that acclimation to new environments is SOO so important. You can kill a fish just by moving it into new water too quickly, you have to slowly add some of the new water to the old water to get the fish used to it and make sure the temperature matches. If you don’t, some fish are sensitive enough that the shock from the difference in water can be fatal. Reptiles are really not much different in a way and it’s no wonder, a person would probably be extremely stressed too if you plucked them out of everything that was familiar to them and put them in a completely new environment with no way of letting of them know what as going on.

As someone who went through treating my snakes for Coccidia (the family of parasites that Cryptosporidium comes from) over a period of 6 months, I can tell you it's hell on earth to get rid of and a serious allegation to place on a breeder. Fumigation and treatment of your facility/house doesn't work. You would literally have to rip everything porous out, throw it all in the trash, heat treat everything else (aka, steam clean the walls, ceiling and floors) and then rebuild the interior. You could also absolutely soak everything in Hydrogen Peroxide with concentrations at or above 12%, but for it to be effective on the oocysts it needs to be on the surface for over 30 minutes. Hydrogen Peroxide evaporates into a toxic mist fairly quickly in my experience (I used it along with steam cleaning) so reapplication is necessary to get the full 30 minutes on surfaces. In my case it was isolated to a single room but when I finally finish remodeling everything I will have spent around $10,000 in vet bills and materials to rebuild. I also had to tear out about $2,500 in bioactive enclosures and I don't think I'll ever trying doing them again after this. The worst part was spending 6-8 hours by myself, washing with soap and water, every single enclosure, every single tub and rack, changing waters, bathing the snakes if they ran through their poop, washing hides, replacing paper towel substrate, forcing medicine down their throats that was slowly destroying their kidneys & livers not to mention intestinal flora, all this, every-single-DAY for 6 months straight. The kicker is that this wasn't even Crypto, just an offshoot in the same family that, by God's mercy, happens to be treatable with medication, and it was still absolute hell to get rid of. I was only treating 13 snakes for 6 months. I don't even want to imagine going through that again, let alone with almost double the animals today. The whole experience almost completely destroyed my love and enthusiasm for my snakes. The 7 beautiful baby snakes I hatched out this year has slightly relit the spark, but I think it'll take a long while until I'm over that experience. There are certain people I will not purchase snakes from for a period of at least 5 years because they've had Crypto outbreaks in their collections and even some customers ended up with sick offspring. I commend those people for coming forward and being honest about their Crypto outbreaks and what they did to make it right by their customers because it can literally break your reputation and entire future as a reptile breeder. I still won't be the guy who takes that risk though, not until they've had years without incident. Slander like this can seriously impact your business if you don't call it out. Good on you for setting the record straight.

@@Bass_attack7755 Yeah. I wasn't pouring it on the surface. 16 fluid ounces at a concentration of 12% was, at the time, $32 per bottle. On the bottle's warning label it says not to inhale the gasses and to ventilate the area after use.

With my tiny amount of experience, I've observed that wild snakes avoid danger and don't want beef. Any wild snake I've ever encountered, wanted nothing more than to get away and hide, so the explanation about John's enclosure being too open and not giving her the opportunity to hide seems like common sense to me. It also explains why she would regurgitate her large meals. Btw, what was he trying to do, bulk her up? If an animal doesn't feel safe, I could understand why it didn't want to move from the most secure place it found in its enclosure. I believe that John also mentioned that she shared an enclosure with an adult male? Even if she was separated and there was only a glass divider, I'd bet that competition and fear would cause additional stress to her. With that said, to me, it seems like this kid may have had his own breeding agenda. Either way, people like John are the reason why I don't work in the animal world. I'm glad that you guys got her back and that she's safe. I was also relieved that he got a full refund instead of another animal. P.S. It's a very pretty snake.

I think the only little "mistake" (for lack of a better term) I would have pointed out is that Barb, as fantastically as she handled the situation, did inadvertently confirm that the original employee (Olivia, was it?) was fired. Initially Barb did say that they no longer worked at the company, which John interpreted to mean that they were fired (she could have left the company for 100 different reasons - ill health, family issues, found a job more suited to them, went back to school/college etc.) However, then Barb responded that her termination had nothing to do with her professionalism/handling of his situation. This is by no means a dig at Barb, she handled him really well, answering all of his questions/concerns politely without brokering his BS. I would just be conscious of revealing information like that for two reasons; firstly, that if things did end in a negative way with Olivia, she could see this as her private information being made public, the second reason is that judging by the conversations with John here in this video it seems likely that no matter what the reason for Olivia's dismissal he will see it as a part of this conspiracy theory he has in his head that NERD are trying to scam him/gaslight him about the "sick animal" they sold him. Again, Barb is awesome, this is in no way a dig at her - it's just something that is good for anyone who works in customer service to bear in mind - you have to be so, so, so careful with your wording when dealing with the public in a professional situation. It's shockingly easy for an error in the language you use to be turned round and used to bite you in the ass!

I caught it from one of the goats we had and it was probably the worst abdominal pain ive ever had. And it gave me the worst diarrhea imaginable. Like food would run through me completely in 10 minutes. It was very difficult to stay hydrated and i can imagine it would be a death sentence for any reptile. Its not incurable for people thankfully. When they found out what it was through a fecal analysis they gave me basically an intestinal flush. I can’t remember the name of the medication but it essentially wrecked my digestive system to clear all the bacteria out and then another series of meds to build it back up again. I caught pneumonia on the end of it but after about 2 months i finally kicked both.

As someone who just dreams of owning a snake and has been following your channel for about a year, when I heard of John's story I had to look up Cryptosporidiosis and just applying common sense I knew she didn't have it. Also, as someone who as a teen bred Gerbils for my local pet store as feeders I learned that when you first get your snake you're not going to feed it for 10-14 days to let it acclimate to its new environment. It seems to me that the customer is an extremely anxious person. Like the way he was emailing them so many times in a row expecting to get a response during non business hours on the weekend is pretty telling. I don’t think he was purposely trying to hurt the snake, but he certainly caused a ton of stress. First off he fed it way too soon and too big of a meal. Then he tried to feed it right away after it regurgitated, not once, but twice! That’s some awful husbandry. Then he had the nerve to say that Kevin doesn’t know as much as he does lol

@@F2007KR exactly! That happens with so many things on the internet where people think they’re experts on a subject because something may have worked for them. But when you’re talking about the health and wellbeing of a snake, especially one that was shipped to brand new environment across the country, you have to be very careful not to cause them unnecessary stress. He obviously fed it a little too soon and way to big of a meal. Once the poor snake regurgitated the meal, this overly anxious dude instantly freaked like the snake came to him deathly ill, but still proceeded to try and feed it the same sized meal again?? And then he repeats that one more time? Like no wonder the poor animal was totally stressed out which can cause sickness very easily. These are super sensitive creatures and I’d much rather listen to someone like Kevin who has a wealth of knowledge and years of experience, than some morons on Facebook.

While I never had snakes. I raised fancy mice. If I got a new mouse (even from established healthy collections and known breeders) I would quarantine, observe, and the mouse would be in a tiny area away from the rest of my mice. This would also let me know if the mouse was pregnant if it was female. I would introduce the new mouse after 2-3 weeks to the group it will be living with through a separator that kept both side safe if anyone had issues. I expect about 3-5 days of "meet and greet" this way. Then add my "meet and greet" cage that is clean, descented, and only used for these situations of adding a new mouse to the gendered groups. I had male and female enclosures, plus one breeder enclosure. I was very careful, I always had buyers for the fancy mice I bred, and I never guarantied color, fur type, or markings until the babies were growing out their fur and I could verify the patterns. I sometimes sold older mice to keep from inbreeding or sold pets (males neutered and females spayed to be pets, I had a great vet who could do both for mice and rats). I figure reptiles get treated similarly if they are from wild sources or brought in from unknown conditions (new breeder source or just returned like the boa here was)

I'm gonna comment because I did on the first video for the algorithm. Putting a newly acquired wild caught snake in a big display enclosure with little hiding areas or plants, especially an emerald tree boa, is a horrible idea. So is adding it to the display room without quarantine. And trying to feed it within days of arrival. Especially an emerald tree boa. Which I have never kept, but researched and decided it was too advanced for me and went with a blood python instead. Which I grew out from a baby into a 4 foot chonky boy before having to rehome him since I couldn't handle him safely alone and lived alone. This whole situation sounds like such a nightmare. I have nice cresties I want to sell but when I ask to see pics of their enclosures first I get ghosted. Good riddance anyway. So I stopped breeding them because if they can't prove they even have a set up yet then I'll just keep them until I find someone who does.

Sounds like unmedicated OCD combined with major anxiety. I also struggle with OCD(rarer presentation with few outward compulsions) and have come close to this kind of spiral before I got good meds to help reign in it. I really think he needs to see a professional for this because it's very healthy to live in that state of mind 24/7 and it can also cause a lot of unnecessary problems with other people, as evidenced by this whole kerfuffle. He also seems to be the type to think he's better than anyone else no matter what, I think that also needs to be addressed because it most commonly stems from a lot of deep-seated insecurity. It's unfortunate that this poor snake had to suffer because of this guy's abysmal mental health and refusal to listen to the advice of far more experienced and educated professionals. I hope Crypto gets to go to a much better home after she recovers.

that little emerald is such a trooper, surviving such bad husbandry AND being the first snake to get over crypto!! for real though, im so glad she made it back to you alive. between the enclosure and how he was trying to feed her such an oversized meal days after shipping (and trying AGAIN when she threw it up) i literally had to skip ahead just to check if the snake made it back to you alive. where in the world did he get the idea that any of that was right? its so easy to listen to the experts who know how to keep an animal healthy and stress free. i wonder if his insistence on feeding her too much and too soon maybe implies he was planning on "power feeding" her for breeding... he put yall in a really tough situation, im just glad you managed to save that snake!!

I had an experience with crypto with a corn snake years ago. I actually just threw out the entire glass enclosure so there was 0 chance it could spread. My snake was taken to the vet and tested positive for crypto. Then my entire collection was tested for crypto twice and thankfully everyone was negative.

@SandraNLN

@@MM-jf1me Well, im not really sure about the details of algorithm. Though I know for the channel's internal metrics they can see when people stop watching their video/if they skip around. I just assume KZbin factors in watch-time for the algorithm as well? But skipping to the end /might/ work, because that usually then shows it as "watched" in your sub-box? I have no clue there. But i do know that general engagement fuels the algorithm (likes, shares, comments). so i guess your comment probably compensates if you don't wanna watch the video all the way through, haha

@@SandraNLNit would be nice if there was some way to find out what affects the algorithm and how. For example, I watch an artist's channel and at the beginning of her videos she explains a product she had made and is selling. The first time I watched it all through as I was curious about the product but now I skip ahead 10s a few times until the video itself begins. I did wonder the other week when she said "if you've seen this product thingy before then feel free to skip ahead about a minute to get to the art tutorial" whether that would actually register on the analytics for her channel and affect the algorithm?

As well as having exposure to a few of a given type they know everything about a breed of snake. I didn’t listen that closely…but he only mentioned having 1 other emerald tree boa. Each snake will have a different personality. Some may be more easily stressed or have a harder time acclimating to a sudden habitat change.

This video is a reupload due to there being a piece of personal information that was overlooked when censoring. To keep this video civil and informative and not have people potentially harass the person using that uncensored private information, NERD immediately took down the video upon noticing this and reuploaded it with only the necessary information visible. It's true, after constant begging, Donny got soft and finally allowed Snarfles to edit a video. Let's all hope Donny learned from this foolish mistake.

My ball python I received from NERD went into a shoebox container like Kevin recommended and eventually into a small VE-70 rack and he is a strong feeder until late autumn through mid spring.

Yep! You have to work a snake up to that point, you can’t just thrust them into a big wide open space. Especially when it was just shipped across the country. You have to get the snake comfortable with you and get him eating eventually. You can’t give it a giant meal 3 days after you received it and expect it not to regurgitate it. Then he instantly comes to the conclusion that this snake is deathly Ill because of that

With any creature, you have to get enclosures that are proportionate to the animals size. Stress is the biggest killer. Tarantulas, bearded dragons, snakes, etc. need their enclosures to grow with them, not before them. Also, you should never feed within the first 5 days of receiving said creature and always start smaller just to lessen the work and possible intimidation. Marshall just wanted to fight that's all

Especially a wild caught. it's one thing to take the risk on not quarantining a captive bred animal, but something that's come out of the wild? That's order's of magnitude higher in terms of risk.
