My favorite link in the Paul is Dead chain (though somewhat obscure) was a Batman comic book where college aged Dick Grayson (Robin) investigates a rumor that one of the members of a famous English band (a fictional band to protect DC Comics from lawsuits) was dead and a lookalike had replaced him. The young superhero detective investigates and discovers that the supposed dead guy was actually the only member still alive, and the other three members were lookalikes. The pseudo Paul started the “Paul is Dead” rumor to turn focus away from the actual dead bandmates, since close examination of the lookalikes would more easily reveal the truth.

Is there a real answer that we can accept? [Read the second paragraph] Fear rules us on a shared and unacknowledged basis through group-oriented behavior and identification. The concept of conspiracy has been developed beyond its original intent as a legal term regarding a case being adjudicated in court where it has specific meaning to come to a resolution according to the law. In any other context, it serves no value unless the intent is to distract and discredit in fear-based shared response by which no initiative may remain in consideration on an individual basis. The Italian forensics group that set out to prove the rumors false based upon photographic evidence, came to the conclusion that they were looking at two different individuals pre and post 1966 as published in the August 2009 issue of Italian Wired Magazine with forensic details. Another piece of evidence was overly obvious -- as all were within an inch of the same height except for Ringo who was shorter. However, post 1966 Paul is inexplicably at least 2 inches taller than the others. Billy had that slight shit-eating grin that Paul never had, while there had never previously been any kind of animosity with John or among the group of the original 4. Contractual obligations however were pressed upon them at their weakest moment when there was already someone who had been a stand-in for Paul after he won a Paul look-a-like contest and was a good musician -- though he never created the same style of introspective music that Paul was famous for. John and Paul who had worked so well together that they shared credit for all of their songs, never again were able to do so post 1966 and they did not get on well. Billy always believed he was better than the others, and this contributed to the break-up. The interview of Paul or Faul as George liked to call him (faux Paul -- Faul) in a crowd of people shortly after John's death is particularly interesting, as he did not know that there was not only audio, but a camera also rolling, held by someone above the crowd nearby on a stairway. "Yeah, it's a drag isn't it?" he responded without hesitation when asked about John's murder, though he claimed to be distraught when asked about it during his appearance on Letterman. However, when he leaves that interview and goes skipping through the crowd with his head high and not a care in the world -- clearly, he had no concern at all. Even if they had a severe falling out somehow, their history of accomplishing so much together would have created a heavy emotional impact on Paul at John's recent unexpected murder. The fact that he had no real concern or condolences to offer makes no sense, unless we realize this is a different individual, someone who never got along well with John or as an integral member of the group. The influential interests by whatever involvement need to have a hand in any major evolution of a social nature, and the Beatles at that time were a literal revolution on multiple levels that few who did not experience it -- would not understand. Being as independent as they were and beyond attempts to influence their output, if something could be managed to remove one of the most influential members of the group, the others would be given a heavy hand to make it extremely difficult upon them under their current obligations -- or to accept an exceptionally generous contract that included requirements to never divulge what took place at great penalty, extreme beyond measure if they did so. With threat versus reward, the third element of this classic three-play is justification not only in terms of financial for all involved, but would involve a security related narrative describing unstable elements of the public that would supposedly lose it and potentially disrupt society and cause harm. Operation Mockingbird has since had their hand in the music industry as well as in script writing and in news organizations as is public knowledge today, and this may have already been in development courtesy of a well known three letter agency.

Another urban legend was that in 1976 when everyone was trying to get The Beatles to regroup by offering big money, Lorne Michaels went on Saturday Night Live and offered them $2000, split four ways whichever way they wanted. The story was Paul was visiting John at the Dakota - Wings was touring America - saw Michaels and almost went down to 30 Rock that night to claim the money. I don't know if the story came from Paul or John themselves, but George tried to claim the money is a sketch when he guested on SNL a year later. (He played Here Comes the Sun with Paul Simon).

How foolish, to think that musicians doing what good musicians (and other artists) do - and especially when they are very young and brilliant - could be evidence in favor of this ridiculous story. All four of them were continually learning and doing things they'd never done before. Which is one of the things we loved them for! Did you ever notice that all of a sudden, on the White Album, John had several songs that he played in a classic fingerstyle pattern, which HE'D NEVER DONE BEFORE? Maybe it was John who died, and was secretly replaced! Or maybe he'd been hanging out with Donovan in Rishikesh, and Donovan had taught him that style of guitar playing. You think? Nah. Just realized, that's exactly when "John" took up with Yoko, right after "vacationing in India". Uh huh.

Paul could play dead pan so well and often has over the years, but that was so hilarious, can say my favorite ever on SNL which was saying a lot back then when it used to be funny! Chris Farley asking if he remembers being in The Beatles and then gets embarrassed to have asked such a dumb question. The theory actually started right here in Ann Arbor on station WIQB (FM 102.9). A listener called them with a few of the clues. It gathered momentum from there. A listener who wanted to spread his new found truth then called WKNR-FM "Keener FM" Dearborn/Detroit and was telling/asking Uncle Russ Gibb could these be real clues to an untimely death. Uncle Russ was known for his segments of talk between the music and the much larger audience took it from there. [Paul Harvey voice] "and that's the start of the story" [/PH voice] and you picked it up there and on to the Michigan Dailey article. Thanks for going over all this again.

There was a great documentary called “Cranberry Sauce” about this. It made a strong case the Beatles fed into it. Partially as they had a good time doing it. But also because they were told it stimulated sales. Each release was seen a puzzle piece and mild fans that may have been on the fence were swayed to buy to try and find clues their friends were overlooking.

You have to remember that the British often have a "sledge hammer" wit about them (re. Monty Python) and I think this was always about that. Around the time that Lennon put his foot in his mouth with the "more popular than Jesus" (paraphrasing here) comment during an interview, and the ensuing backlash over that in the US (people smashing their Beatles records in the street), they took a break from touring. Its my opinion that when they came back, as mostly studio artists not touring, they started experimenting with special effects in the studio, as well as substances, that kicks in the 'ole British sense of humor and they had something that would help the world to forget the ill fated comment in that interview. I think they most definitely put those Easter eggs in there to have a bit of fun with the public, and with their new found recording effects, it worked out. Paul I think always had fun with this up until now. I still remember his part on "Do They Know Its Christmas" where he says, "this is Paul McCartney, sorry I can't be with you" followed by a silly laugh and him making the sound of a tape being cut, I often wonder how many others picked up on that. I think a part 2 would be a lot of fun, so you got my vote on that one. Lastly, the lyrics of She's Leaving Home always make me tear up, but that's nothing to do with the conspiracy theory.

The "Paul Is Dead" rumor is what made me a Beatles fan, and the band my favorite group. As a teen in the 1980s, I read a book called "Big Secrets" that looked at such things as the secret ingredients to Kentucky Fried Chicken, and the initiation practices of the Masons, and a chapter on bakcwards masking on records, particularly in rock music. The book was a clinical examination, approaching the subjects from an objective standpoint. For the backwards masking, the author rented a recording studio and played the albums backwards to determine if the "messages" on the albums were intentionally planted, a phonetic coincidence, or utter nonsense. Naturally, the Beatles and the PID rumor/hoax was a big part of that chapter. Even then, as a youth, I never believed McCartney actually died in the 1960s and was replaced, but the whole thing fascinated me and my more macabre sensibilities. I was only a casual Beatles fan before this point, hearing the same batch of their hits most of us heard on "oldies but goodies" programs of that era. However, due to my new interest in hearing these clues, I bough the cassettes (yes, tape cassettes) and dubbed them to store bought blank tapes, rewinding and flipping the spools and playing them so I could hear the backwards "messages." In the process, I listened to the entire albums and discovered fresh (to me) Beatles music, which was a revelation of sorts that cemented for me what all the hype was about the Fab Four that I had been told about my the media. I found that the band really was the greatest pop/rock band of all-time. Years later, I had my own public access TV show and I made a Halloween episode focusing on the PID hoax. And when KZbin first came along, I uploaded that episode to the site, in 2006. Soon after, I noticed more PID videos from others, and many (scarily, too many) who believed there really was a cover-up! It was then I first truly learned how many conspiracy driven folk there are out there. Brrrr!!! Anyway, in 2010, I decided to make a full-blown documentary on the subject matter titled, "Cranberry Sauce: An Examination of The Paul Is Dead Hoax." In 2020, I made a re-edit of that video (mostly for copyright issues), and that version remains up on my other YT channel to this day. Through it I offer an objective look, using snippets from interviews and radio broadcasts, and my research of old articles and periodicals, to illustrate the story. It's one of my most-viewed videos to this day, and gets comments regularly from fans, non-believers and conspiracy-minded folk alike. The documentary has fulfilled my desire to delve into the whole thing, and so I rarely seek out new videos about the subjcet anymore, but I follow this channel and so naturally I wanted to hear the Professor's take on all of it.

Paul was a self-taught bassist while Billy Shepherd had 10 years of musical theory training. Shepherd was hired as a decoy so the real band could get out of a location without being swamped by the wild crowd. All that musical background is why the music of the Beatles suddenly got more complicated since Shepherd had the formal training to write complex music.

I saw Paul in concert in Brisbane, Australia, in 2017 and the following happened. Half way through the show he was reading some of the placards held up in the front rows. One of them read, “I was at Shae in 1965’. Paul’s immediate response was, “that was before my time.” Of all the things that he could have replied with, why that? Only Paul (or perhaps Billy) can answer that. And Adam: there are many other much more compelling parts that you have not covered. Many more…..

Every now and then I still get an update where someone else makes a post linking to one of my comments. I can't remember my user name or password though and cannot log on any more. If you check out photographs there was a major difference in looks between 65 Paul and after. I’d love to hear thoughts on that from a PID believer.

@@RS-nf4vz Paul changed a lot between 1965 and 1967. To be honest it may have had something to do with the drugs they started experimenting with. In 65 they released the "Help" movie and Paul had a round face by 67' his face was long, thin and Gaunt looking. There were also pictures of him with his first Girl friend in 65' where he was only a little taller than her and in the last few pictures he was with her he seemed to have gained a few inches in height. In 65' he would have been 23 years old and 67' 25. People do change a little but most people achieve their final height before 23 years old.

On Anthology 2, you can clearly hear Lennon say "cranberry sauce," twice! Paul introduced RINGO as being "the one and only Billy Shears." Years later, Lennon wrote, "Yes, my name is Billy Shears," in his song, "I'm the Greatest," which Ringo sang on his self-titled album in 1973. "Lost your hair" was a British saying for being very upset, as in someone telling you, "don't lose your head over it."

Tara Browne, an heir to the Guinness fortune, died in a car crash in London on December 18, 1966 at the age of 21. His death inspired the Beatles' song "A Day in the Life" from their *Sgt. Pepper* album.

Exactly - where is exactly where this (absurd) theory started as it uses the details of Browne’s horrific death for the car crash of Paul that never happened - and urban legends often start with a few factual details. The conspiracy used the link between the tragic death of the young, immensely wealty, and sadly prone to the reckless behavior younger men engage in sometimes that ends in tragedy (see JFK jr - not instrument rated yet trying to fly in twilight and over water) Browne - and his friends, the Beatles and the Stones, as inspiration for the entire scenario. Browne was a very public figure as a symbol of the swinging London scene, and as all Beatles fans know, this tragedy inspired “A Day in the Life.”

After watching the documentary "Soaked in Bleach," I don't believe it's unreasonable to speculate that Cobain was indeed murdered. As for Paul, you basically had my same argument against it. Whoever replaced him had to also have immense talent. For that reason, I think the odds are against it being a replacement. It's possible, but I just don't think it's likely they could have found a duplicate with that much talent that resembles him that closely.

They played it to the hilt, and why not, it was so much fun trolling everyone!......From Johns saying "I buried Paul" on perhaps the best Beatle song ever, to Paul wearing the black rose while the others had on red. Paul with his back turned to us on Sgt Pepper; Crossing the street on Abbey Road was another best of trolls. They did everything they could think of to play this up! You left out the one that made it clear to me who was behind all this: the drum head. The original rumor was that Paul had died in a car accident on Nov. 11, 1966. The Sgt. Pepper’s cover drumhead, if the top half is mirrored reads “1 ONE IX HE DIE.” You’ll never convince me that happened by pure chance. That took some serious effort. I don’t think any sane person believes that Paul is actually dead. Dude’s still going strong at 82. But there was probably a rumor at the time that he died and John, in particular, thought it was hilarious and ran with it, leaving all the “clues.” That was his sense of humor. It was a perfect opportunity to poke a little fun at his band mate. The rest of the guys had to have been going along with it, too. There are so many undeniably intentional “clues.” Then the fans took the bait. I’m sure the guys were tickled when the fans found new clues that they hadn’t even intended. I think this is all a brilliant piece of prankery, and everything I know about John Lennon tells me that it is his handiwork.

At the very least Mike Williams (Sage of Quay™) has me convinced that the band had no part in writing any of the songs for the Rubber Soul album. Sessions player did the music while the band only recorded the vocals. Rubber Soul was created in the same manner as The Monkees' albums were by a team of hit makers.

When I was a DJ in the 1980s, I worked an overnight shift and read a book called The Complete Beatles. It was such an amazing book. On Sgt Pepper, you forgot the mirror placed in the middle of the base drum. The reflection reads, "I ONE HE DIE." The A is an arrow pointing to Paul. Man, you are right. This is a rabbit hole that Alice herself would have a fun time in. Remember when John said that the Beatles were more popular than Christ? That was in March of 1966. Their image was burned and lost on so many. Due to their massive decline, RUMOR has it that record executives developed this PAUL IS DEAD bit to boost record sales. This episode brought me back to the studio, production, and control rooms. Thank you. A part two would be nice.

There was no "massive decline" in the Beatles records sales or ticket sales after the Jesus Christ controversy. It was only in the religiously fundamental regions of the United States where there was any flak at all. What has always made my eyes roll is why anyone ever put stock in this dumb "theory." It makes no sense whatsoever, and it never did. If the remaining Beatles were trying to keep the gravy train rolling by replacing Paul, why would they deliberately drop clues that could blow their coverup? People don't clandestinely conspire and then try to let everyone in on it at the same time.

Read the book The Memoirs Of Billy Shears! Not saying that book is the gospel or 100% factual ( if you believe the book's premise that it was dictated by Faul himself, who had to change details enough as to not violate the non disclosure agreement he signed, then even the most ardent believer agrees it's not completely factual) but it makes a very persuasive argument for the PID conspiracy! The book breaks down hundreds of Beatles songs and explains their hidden meaning as well as all the clues they left!

I remember the radio station special. ‘Paul McCartney is Alive And Well….Maybe!’ As a 15 year old, and a huge fan, I was fascinated. I finally concluded that, if…If…any group would pull a prank like this, it would be them. I imagined John being in charge of it all. And it fit his snarky persona. Keeping in mind John saying his lyrics for I Am The Walrus were written to mess with those people that constantly nit-picked his lyrics for hidden meanings. That’s my favorite position. OPD indeed! It’s all too much of course, but it’s fun.

In early Beatles footage, Paul played bass and sang harmony while barely looking at his hands. Compare this to the rooftop concert, or other later performances. Here's an interesting exercise: compare the size of the Hofner bass against Paul before 1966 and after 1967. Choose a full body photograph from each time period, and use the bass as a measuring stick. One would think the results would be identical. Try it and see what you find out.

I first heard about that BS sometime in probably the mid 70s around the time I really discovered the Beatles.in high school. I had heard some of their songs on the radio as a kid and actually saw Help at the movies when I was about 6 but didn’t really know much about them at that age. When I really started to discover them several years after they had broken up I tried to find out everything I could about them. That’s when I came across the “Paul is dead” crap.
