Took my wife and daughter to an Eagles concert. It was over two hours of great music and stories. Four band members swapped lead vocals. One of the great things about living outside LA was the concert venues. I devoted at least $4,000 a year taking my daughter to see every living legend from the 60s to the 80s. 1. Take It Easy is a must. It quite possibly has the best or most recognized 2nd verse of the 20th century. It established the Eagles sound. I don't need Peaceful Easy Feeling to remind me who Eagles are even though it was a song my band chose to play at our very first performance ever. 2. Desperado - for all the reasons you stated. The ultimate pop/county album track Eagles had a big part inventing that sound! 3. .Take it To The Limit ok, I get it. Randy Meisner deserves his credit and shows how diverse Eagles quickly became. But it's the title track from that album... 4. One Of These Nights, that is a must! All those guitar parts woven together, falsetto on par with the Bee Gees. You can't talk Eagles without this one. Flawless production, it was No. 1 for a reason. They had popularized Country/Rock/Pop now how would they grow? Disco was gaining steam, where would it, how could it merge? It all happens in the 4 minutes of this song. 5. Hotel California Just because it IS! New Kid in Town was a new kind of ballad that really rocks at the end! But if we can fudge even more, number 7 would likely be Life In The Fast Lane to me, because that song doesn't happen without Joe Walsh and he changed the Eagles sound just by being there. 6. Heartache Tonight. You can use any song from The Long Run and it works here, that album was so massive. Even I Can't Tell You Why was just as representative of the evolution of the Eagles sound, smoothest vocals around and a fantastic outro solo which resembled NKIT. This still leaves out so many of my personal favorites: Victim of Love, Already Gone, James Dean, Those Shoes, Seven Bridges Road, On The Border, The Disco Strangler.... If you had to go back to a true 5 song list, you could still leave out Take It to the Limit and have a grand slam (+1).

Like he said, picking five was so tough that he had to add one. My personal favorite of theirs is One Of These Nights. The rhythm guitars panned hard left and right bouncing off each other is so amazingly subtle yet powerful and the lead just cuts through while still being silky smooth. The vocals are soothing yet powerful as they sail over the top and it’s all EQ’d about as perfectly as it gets. In a world of incredible songs it’s one of my all time favorites from any band ever.
