Scanner and hard disk are also trying to use the same SCSI ID. You don't necessarily need a terminator, though it does often help.

I know this is a year old, but if dd just returns super fast and didn't physically write the disk, type 'sync' to force it. Linux (like every OS) caches writes to slow devices to stay performant and not hang up DMA channels. 'sync' forces it to flush all pending writes.

@smallmoneysalvia7 жыл бұрын
You can use cat instead of dd to match block and sector sizes automatically. I would suggest that in the future. Your DD would have run a lot faster if you set your block size correctly. The command would be "cat | pv > /dev/fd0" The "| pv" portion is optional and displays the transfer rate. If pv isnt installed: "cat > /dev/fd0"

Trying to locate that one piece of needed software would, just drive me crazy.

Under /dev/ you have the actual device. There you copy raw disk images, using dd or cat. If they are compressed, you have do decompress them first or use something like zcat which does it for you. Under /media/ you have the filesystem on it as interpreted by the OS. You copy files there. Not disk images, unles you want to transfer that. ALWAYS umount /media/ before dd'ing a disk image. Otherwise you will end up with erratic behavior and corrupt data. testdisk and photorec are two utilities by the same author which allow you to analyze and recover disk images and the files on them. Even if the filesystem is unrecognizable, you may be able to get the files off it using photorec. Also allows for "undelete".
@zianadra7 жыл бұрын
The .img file type is best used with WinImage. It makes floppies with that extension. I've made quite a few DOS floppies with it too. I think there's a Mac program that can do it but I've not looked.

'.scr' files are screensavers - if you changed the extension for win16 apps its likely to have '.com' extension. You can get apps for windows that can convert '.img' files to disks.
@WOSArchives7 жыл бұрын
Nicholas Weightman The .img file extension is a rather generic one. Plus, actually look at the file size of the programs. The "make floppies.scr" file is only 14 bytes, so it's too small to have anything of of use IMO.

"Linux users can use the “dd” command to write floppies from image files. If the image file is a raw image, a simple “dd if=path_to_image_file of=path_to_floppy_drive” will do the trick.
