First SE/30 had no bong at startup = needs recap immediately or it'll fail very soon. Third SE/30, same thing. Seriously, these Macs have suicidal electrolytic capacitors that, when they fail, they leak all over the logic board and eat all the traces. If you buy a Classic Mac, RECAP THE BOARD!

@Alexlfm4 жыл бұрын
For the love of god, make sure you’ve taken the batteries out and replace them! That SE/30 and the classic 2 are both so beautiful for being stock, it would be horrible if they were destroyed. Probably would be a good idea to recap them just in case as well. Also, good to know I’m not the only one with literally 20 compact Macs in the basement. I just can’t pass up a good deal. I try to justify it that I’m a collector not a hoarder, but it’s clear we both know the truth when it comes to that... Edit: Also seriously! No OG Mac or fat Macs. Com’on man, I expected more from you. I have a HDD image built with games and all the utilities needed for both the SE and another for the SE/30 which I use for my machines. I can post them if there’s interest.
@Alexlfm4 жыл бұрын
Jackson Tech Things In fairness, probably 5 of them are ones I need to part out. I bought quite a few SEs and even an SE/30 mostly for the keyboards and mice (along with the floppy and hdd) since they were super cheap (aka less then the keyboard cost). The condition on them is so bad that they really aren’t worth repairing. Most of the logic boards are trashed. I do however have 6 working SE/30s all with various upgrades. The SE/30 was my first computer so I have a sore spot for it. A hoarding show “expert” would say I’m still trying to replace my original machine my mom made me sell way back when so I take in any unwanted machines to compensate. Now as for the other compacts the two Quadra 700s, the Lisa, 4 iMacs g3, two g4, TAM, PowerMacs, and (for some reason) three Mac Pros, well, I have no excuse. I keep hoping one day I’ll have more time and make content on them but just haven’t had a chance. Probably would be better if I didn’t have a basement so it would force me to stop...

The 840av was running in 256 colors mode, which slows down the probably already unoptimized Photoshop 3 when drawing 24-bit graphics to screen with dithering. I used to paint with real-time performance with ColorIt! 3 (PS competitor) on the slower 33MHz no-FPU '040 P636 running in Thousands; that program was pretty optimized, looking at its code.

I have 4 of these mini Macs, two Classic II's, one is pristine and 100% working after recapping the board, the other the hard drive just died and the case is yellowed. The key is replace the capacitors, on the logic board if it had the little silver can SMD caps, or several of the ones on the analog board that typically go bad. The problem with your nice looking one is probably bad leaky caps on the logic board or a bad safety cap on the analog board. 'The Dead Mac Scrolls' book/pdf on the internet has a good list of potential issues and common failure points to fix. 6:38 The VERY early Macintoshes were built in Fremont, California, the building is still there, it's really nice, my original 128k was built there.

There were issue with older SCSI Hdds that they had too much grease in the motor and would not spin up if they had been sitting for a long time so what we would do is pick it up and smack the front right in front of the HDDa couple of times right when you turn the machine on and it would get the drive spinning. worth a try
@EverythingRetro14 жыл бұрын
the classic II and color classic require you to press the power button on the keyboard after the power switch is flipped to turn it on
@needfuldoer45314 жыл бұрын
I think I can diagnose at least some of those from this video: Classic II - More than likely the power filtering caps right off the AC socket are bad. Dual floppy SE: The spring loaded / motorized parts of the drives need to be disassembled, cleaned, and greased. It also won't boot off that 1.44 meg floppy, because both of its drives are 800k. Phantom hard drive SE/30: There are rubber bump stops inside those old hard drives for the drive head arm to hit. Over time, they degrade into sticky goo the drive can't pull the arm out of. Other than that it looks okay. "Jail bars" SE/30: Either the PRAM battery or the capacitors leaked and damaged traces near the VRAM. IIcx: The logic board needs to be recapped. There's a logic based soft power circuit that actually turns it on and off, like ATX motherboards can do. Leaking capacitor schmoo can make this circuit go haywire. All of these machines need to have their PRAM batteries removed, and their logic boards and power supplies recapped. That's very, very common for these old Macs.

Infinite speed You can’t directly connect a modern display to that, even with an adapter. Apple at the time used very strange resolutions and refresh rates with basically RGB output. Even with an adapter you need an older display capable of a wide range of analog input to use it. Probably was easier to use the composite then spend 30 minutes setting dip switches and trying different monitors.
