My best friend had the same name as her step-sister. BF's mother died leaving 3 kids (including BF) and her father married a widow who also had three children. The eldest in each family had different but similar names (think Margaret and Margot), the middle girls had the same name (but different middle names) and the youngest had variations on the same name (Think Jack and John). To make things easier, the father never adopted the step-mother's kids to avoid confusion.

It's weird but possible. My father's family overused the name of Robert. There is a Robert in first marriage and Robert in the second marriage. So both siblings have the same first name. They didn't grow up together.
