My daughter has a MacBook pro that cost over $2000. Well unfortunately one day, she spilled some drink on it and the LCD became unusable. Apple said there was nothing that could be done to save it and that they would give us $300 for it towards the purchase of a new MacBook pro. I didn't do that and sent it to Louis. They did a deep cleaning of it, charged us like $120 and it's working perfectly even to this day. I have zero trust in Apple to ever do the right thing for their customers.

They make money off you either way. They never actually *repair* anything in the stores, they only *replace* things. They do it fast and easy or they don't do anything. Same standardized process. They don't have your best interest in mind. Independent, unauthorized repair shops *need* to make it work (literally and figuratively) for the cheapest price possible, or they'd be out of business! How does Apple make money? 1. If they replace your board, screen etc. even though it isn't necessary, they make a shitton of money off you. 2. If they can't, or rather won't, you buy a new one and they make a shitton of money off you. Alternatively, if the "repair" is too expensive (which is often the case) you buy a new one. It's a win-win situation for Apple.

Unfortunately, we had a similar issue with my wife’s Lenovo except it just broke in normal use in one month. They said we had to pay $60 under warranty just to send it in, give them 6 months to see if it was our fault, and then they would determine if they could repair it. If they couldn’t we would have to pay even more to have them send it back to us! We bought a MacBook instead and have had better success (knock on wood).

I never forgot the time when Staples forced me to destroy perfectly functional and brand new, packed, pristine Gateway computers because we hadn't sold them and they were sitting in the backstore. Still remember the boxes with cow patterns on them. I asked about donating them to schools or internet cafés which was refused. I felt so embarrassed to be tasked with destroying perfectly functional stuff AND at the same time be under pressure from management to repair, re-shrink-wrap, prevent theft in my department to avoid unnecessary losses for the store. It felt like an unnecessary and preventable loss to me and I didn't understand the difference. I kept one key from each keyboard I was forced to destroy, and still have them as a reminder.

Like with Hondas on the car market. I paid extra to buy my Honda Fit over a Chevy, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, or Kia because it'll last longer and be easier to maintain. Apple products were still fairly robust 15 odd years ago. My mom runs a small graphic design company and had used macs as work computers from day 1. When I was little in the 2000s, her company had machines for well over a decade before they were replaced. Now she's lucky to get half of that. Not even just hardware issues, software ones.

I was at my local e-waste collection place to drop off an old de-humidifier. There was a mint looking Pioneer stereo amplifier, which I immediately picked up to take home. A worker told me I could not take it or he would call the cops on me. I protested and said its just something discarded for waste...the guy took it and forcefully threw it in the dumpster and basically destroyed it. What a shame.

Depends who you get. I've taken home a few bits and pieces (complete computers with hard disks and all) but have been denied a wheel or once even the base of a blender (needed the switch panel). If you build a rapport, you can get lots of good stuff. Try thrift stores, I regularly get 4:3 LCDs for my retro computers from them for around $10. Harder to get DIN or even PS/2 keyboards, but they do show up.

That said there hasn't been anything I'd bother taking there the last few times other than the occasional old LCD or obsolete transformer bricks and I have enough of those.

I saw an article somewhere that Apple sued a contractor ((Canadian I think) who were reselling devices they were supposed to take apart and recycle. The judge ruled in Apples favor based on the terms of the contract, but gave them a reduced fine, lecturing Apple that the guilty company was doing a public and environmental service, and Apple faking caring about the environment. They only do "green" things that save them money in material cost or tax deductions. We need more judges like that.

They also should have ruled that such things aren’t allowed in Canada because Canada cares for the environment instead of the United States! I really hope at least the EU makes a ruling on this, like they did with usb c, so apple is forced to do it if they want to continue to sell. The EU is really fucking over their own industries due to the environment regulations, so it needs to apply to other companies too, otherwise it’s an unfair advantage! If apple denies doing it there should be a policy in place that the manufacturer themself has to repair the device for free for 5 years after it’s sold. Very often original owners don't have an up to date email on file, valid phone number, etc On top of it, if you get the right info they may not answer the phone in the first place. Then if they do answer the phone, they might not believe you are who you say you are. Better idea would be to check against police records. Did the owner report the serial stolen? No? Does the current owner show some kind of proof of current ownership? Yes? Unlock it.

The chip shortage just gave them an commonly known excuse to drive their prices up, and restricting second hand use helps them reduce the supply side. Apple is not the only company guilty. all of the IT jobs I've had were for school districts, and when they got rid of a bunch of machines all at once I'd sit there and make sure every one of them had its BIOS unlocked so that whoever ended up with it could do what they wanted with their new machine. I had bosses who yelled at me for doing it, and 'wasting' their time, but it's just the right thing to do. and when most of my time was spent going around to every machine on campus doing small little things like that to each one anyway, this was actually easy, since they're at least all in one spot. I'd just boot into the BIOS, unlock it, inventory the serial number and district number, put it on the pile of outgoing, and repeat until the whole lot was done. that was the good ol' days where unlocking the BIOS was enough.

This reminds me of a time years ago when a friend gave me his Chromebook that was still locked to the school we went to, to try to unlock it for him. I'm not 100% sure how I did it, but after an OS reinstall didn't work, I tried everything I could think of to corrupt the ROM enough to break the lock and allow me to reinstall the ROM. I was doing things like starting an OS reinstall and disconnecting the battery halfway through, running a neodymium magnet over the storage and ROM chips. After enough abuse, it finally corrupted enough to allow me to access the bios and fully reinstall the ROM.

2:20 I worked in IT at a local community college & you would be surprised how frequently people would buy (or receive donation) our older Apple devices 2-4+ years AFTER we got RID of them & then would call us asking if we could remove the MDM activation lock. The helpdesk staff initially were told to basically tell these people to go F themselves there was nothing we could do. (That senior manager obviously doesn’t have any clue what IT is about anymore but thinks he does because he’s been there forever. 🙄) I stepped in and told Helpdesk directly, NO! Don’t do that, tell them yes we can give us a few days & Create a ticket & send it to our new Apple dept so they can go into Jamf and verify that the device was removed & unlocked. Once I did that, I found many tickets, most being from non profit organizations who were DONATED THESE DEVICES! There was no dedicated Apple team prior & this is what caused this very simple step of not removing the old devices from Jamf as the normal Microsoft techs didn’t have access to Jamf. It really makes me wonder who gave up prior to this “process change” and simply threw the computers away.. 🤦😡 Apple/Jamf/etc. really needs to do something to fix this problem from proceeding, something simple like you have to remove it and if you don’t we’ll harass you asking if the device has been sold or not, if you don’t respond within a week, it’ll be removed/unlocked.

Real question is WTF did the campus keep the old units in the MDM inventory after those were written off. Keeping them in the inventory also kept those in MDM eating licenses and maybe even creating additional costs with the per device licenses for different apps. When we do decommission we have lists of devices and then buck delete those from AD, MDM and ABM, and do not forget to forward sad into to your wholeseller, because they might re-import those devices into ABM....

Right to repair is fundamental and I have been a part of both organizing repair sessions in Schools, and petitioning the Norwegian government to drop VAT on people doing repairs. Something I would suggest you fight for too, 0 VAT on spare parts and work for repairs. It is VATed and payed for already. This will help hugely in terms of climate change and all that. In Argentina, stolen phones have their users report them stolen to the OEM. The OEM then correlates the owner to the last IMEI that registered to their name, and that IMEI gets added to a blacklist shared between all cell providers in the country. Most importantly though, they can also remove any devices from the blacklist if they get added by mistake or the original owner recovers the device. Blacklisted phones never get allowed on the cellular network again. It would be so simple to extend this to have the cell tower return a special error code that automatically hardlocks the device until it ends up at the local authorities. And it's not hard to use some other technology in a laptop to deliver on this mechanism, too (something akin to Windows license activation, but in reverse, and not controlled directly by Microsoft). It could be as simple as having the device query whether or not its hardware identifier is in a blacklist, and then cache that answer into the secure enclave, any slip-up on the thief's side and it'll be too late, and unless they happened to have access to the blacklist themselves, after it got locked, there would be no way back. Modern devices from all manufacturers could be programmed to have this behavior at the bootloader level. OS sets stolen flag, bootloader gets locked, bootloader queries cell tower on every boot to check if the device ID is absent from the blacklist. Clear flag if that ever happens. Really simple. And when using proper encryption and digital signatures, impossible to fake. And most importantly, this solution allows the right people to unlock the device easily (on Windows laptops, the Intel ME and AMD PSP are capable of implementing this kind of behavior, and the unlock state could be tracked over the onboard Ethernet or standard, special-use USB hardware that legal institutions could have access to. On laptops though, I'd rather this feature be completely opt-in). The main problem I find with this method would be how to prevent ransom towers. The blacklists would have to be signed and already trusted by the device in order to be respected, in a similar vein to how HTTPS works. That in turn would require the mechanism being implemented on an international scale, and the device would have to require the hardware identifier being removed from the same database that had it locked in the first place in order to be unlocked. Either that, or have its certificate revoked by the international certification authorities for any reason (say, if it leaked or was abused by anybody). Then the user could just flash the relevant (manufacturer-signed) firmware update and the device could automatically self-unlock. It's also important that the local trusted authority database be able to be updated independently of the rest of the firmware or device-specific oddities, so that even devices that don't get additional firmware updates can still flash the updated trusted authority database used on a more recent device of the same manufacturer.

Unfortunately the IMEI usually is not hardcoded in the device, but it can be altered using a suitable tool (used during manufacture and also by repairpersons who swap the board that holds the IMEI, but the device has to keep its original IMEI). Such tools always find their way into the hands of the criminals, so those blacklisting schemes mainly cause inconvenience and do nothing against the theft of phones.

@@Rob2 Depends on the tier of your thief. Most thieves over here end up dismantling the phone to sell the parts on the used market instead of doing that. That was the point of passing this mechanism: you can't completely erase all the ways thieves might be able to profit from the things they steal, but you can raise the skill floor required to do that. There's also people who don't bother, just sell account-locked devices, screw over the people who try to get working phones for cheap and then vanish, but again, it's about deincentivizing theft. One way to deincentivize theft is also building a healthier economy that people can thrive in without the need to steal things in the first place, but a surprising amount of people don't seem to see it that way, either. But hey, what are ya gonna do? Anything that isn't taking steps backwards is better than nothing, right? Passing R2R here would hurt that black market once again, which in turn would deincentivize another big source of thievery. Besides, a thief that could change an IMEI or any other hardware serial can also usually break an account lock already. We used to hack the BIOS on gov-provided school PCs that would lock themselves out after the program that had them provided to schools was shut down because the keys to keep them unlocked would stop being given. It's not like DRM, which inconveniences the wrong people most of the time. If the wrong device gets IMEI-locked here, all the owner has to do is get to any of their cell provider's storefronts, report it, verify their identity (using their national ID document), and it gets sorted out in minutes. It happened to my mom when we accidentally reported my grandma's phone stolen (which was under my mom's account). The OEM had that phone allowed back on the cell towers right away, and the correct one blocked. It's easy when the same person that reports the device stolen is the same person that requests that report be reverted. Besides, the system doesn't directly accept IMEIs. They use the IMEI number your cell provider last saw you using, so you can't blacklist or whitelist phones you haven't used legitimately before. I guess a person could sell a phone and then report it stolen, but we have a system for that already as well. It's called a lawsuit.

So in the case of a totalitarian regime, their certificate could be revoked by the manufacturers, and all it'd take is a firmware update to unbrick every affected device. This system would also create new standards organizations whose job would be to regulate the implementation and usage of this mechanism by manufacturers and governments alike. Dividing the control here between multiple discrete organizations is a good thing. The systems we have right now have no regulation, you're speaking as though major manufacturers like Apple, Intel and AMD aren't already theoretically capable of bricking your hardware to their discretion, with or without the government's involvement. There are no right people because people are humans and humans are prone to corruption and stupidity. And it makes very well a difference if the OEM can brick something by a bogus firmware update which the user must install manually, or if the device can be bricked over the air/network. A normal firmware does not phone home to get brick lists, so if some OEM would add this it would be discovered ling before it could be used on a large scale by analyzing the network traffic. So the risk of a OEM or a state level actor doing something bad multiples immensely if such a regime would be in place.

The funny thing is that they remove the drive for security but they then sell used drives. I bought one, it was erased but not completely. I used recovery software and found the drive came from Halliburton. Had lots of emails, pictures, internal memos of operations on it. Most of it related to maintenance and repair estimates of oil refineries but also internal programs and announcements for employees.

Many Windows device come with BitLocker enabled already, and Macs have file vault. The problem with full disk encryption is that to actually make it safe, the secret needed to decrypt it during the boot requires the user to enter the secret key. Otherwise you can *pretend* that storing the actual secret key on the DRM chip (typically called "TPM") is actually safe. And companies do not want to go with "user enters the password after every boot" because their users always forget the password.

6:35 One small nitpick: to erase most modern SSDs (not sure about Apple though, but pretty sure they support this somehow as well), you don't need to overwrite it. They have some random key generated and store all data with encrpyted this key (and this encoding / decoding happens fully in HW in the SSD controllor). This is also transparant for the OS or formatting, there are filesystem fornat option which will create the filesystem encrypted as well, but this is something else. When performing a "secure erase", this key in the SSD controllor is deleted and replaced with a new random key. All readable data is now actually just random noise. And this T2 stuff and anti second hand stuff is really terrifying.

Gibson does the same thing with guitars. Rather than sawing off the top of the headstock (brand name) and donating them to charities etc they take a table saw to them and chop them into bits of unusable scrap and throw them in a dumpster. They even make retailers do it and provide proof of destruction on returns with defects. This is Gibson so that happens a LOT. People paying $2000 - $10,000 for a guitar WILL return it for a finish blemish or barely noticeable QC issue. They are more concerned with someone potentially "fixing" a scrapped guitar and selling it as repaired than they are about the environment or their customers. The custom shop stuff is better but you pay through the nose for that. At least they don't make guitars designed to break in a few years, probably because they know that wouldn't fly, it's a hunk of wood with magnets, wires and strings after all.

I recently made the mistake of breaking a key on my M1 MacBook Air. Long story short, a metal pin on the keyboard is broken. I don't have a official Apple store in my country, only counterfeit ones that are authorised resellers though. You think Genius Bar is shitty? These counterfeit stores are SHITTY. I wan't to replace my keyboard without having to replace the whole top-case. The keyboard is partly screwed in and partly riveted from what I know, my question is, would I be able to replace the keyboard only with the original screws, or are the rivets necessary in keeping the keyboard in place? And would I be able to use a spare keyboard from an 2020 Air, or would I need one specifically for the M1 (I have neither, it's easier to get the former one)?

Hmm… So there are always more and more “security” reasons. Seems to me that a removable NVMe drive/memory would solve most data privacy issues. When the hardware fails, just remove the drives, so people can't get to it and the user would have a change to restore encrypted data. This used to be the norm, but not anymore. One solution to the activation lock problem would be to make it so that you can submit a request to remove activation lock, and if the device is not marked as stolen at that point, any devices signed into that apple id display a prompt, and if the device is not either “released” by the original owner, or marked as stolen within 90 days (either by the original owner responding to the prompt, or by it being reported stolen to the police), activation lock is automatically removed But of course, apple would never do that

Mostly likely would. If it currently did not it would be changed almost immediately. Because the storage is integrated into the boards it will have to say the board and all parts of the board must be destroyed. No one would specify the storage because it makes it far too easy for a technicality to creep in. MacOS has a feature called virtualization, and also it has an encryption system in HFS+, so all of this can be integrated into a boot sequence. @@Apollo-Computers Firmware updates, Keeping track of charging rates,Monitering if your charger is being used by someone other than the owner,etc. Not all Ev chagers have wifi chips or bluetooth chips. The chargepoint charger will still charge the car and is working just no connectivity.

If you think about it, the MacBook Pro is the true successor to old CRTs. It's reminiscent of both their hefty weight and the environmental factors of leaden glass. Apple made a real green innovation by gluing treated glass to aluminum.

High voltages obviously meant you could fry yourself, but everyone could in theory open the thing and turn the potentiometers to adjust the beam. Which reminds me that I have to do that on one of my old monitors. Oh, and CRTs were reusable. I have one made in 1999 that is still in perfectly working condition that I got for free from someone who was already the 3rd owner of it. Can't do that with those macs

I am in conflict with apple for a non working macbook pro for 8! Months. Its crashing with kernel panic all the time. So far they told me to wait for updates to fix it. Machine should be exchange from the get go. If they give me a refurb instead of a new machine I'm ebaying it and am done with apple

I stopped using apple units in 2017 when i first got my Windows 7 Tower. The macbooks i own are merely old units i have in my collection... The last one i used was a 2012 which is STILL use able today with mods

I recently bought a 2015 MacBook Air from Facebook Marketplace for about $100. The owner explained they had owned it from new, it had developed intermittent problems and they had taken to Apple who said they were unable to repair stand that they would recycle it for free if she wanted to buy another MacBook. The MBA is virtually mint and it displayed all of the symptoms she stated. I reset the SMC and I have been able to perform a clean install on the internal SSD. I have run it for several days with video and internet over wifi with no issues. Even the battery has less than 390 cycles on it. But Apple said they couldn't repair it and suggested she buys a new one while they recycle the original one for free.

The entire electronics recycling industry is a scam, for many reasons, but especially what we see in this video. How many old smartphones, tablets, laptops, pcs, macs, etc. Got "recycled" into dust for the mere crime of having "sensitive data" on them? It's not just about the right to repair anymore, it's the right to re-use, and the right to own that is now being targeted by these companies/governments.

This "system" is not to prevent stolen devices from being useful, it is purely to force repair shops out of the repair market. There are ways that Louis covers to allow for the stolen device issue to be dealt with, without destroying reuse, recycle efforts. I believe their main drive is to use this to force purchase of new devices.

One of the reasons we can’t have nice things is crooked people. The company I worked for used to donate old, but working, computers to places like school districts in poor neighborhoods . Apparently, some companies were doing this to avoid paying to properly dispose of non-working computers, and they would end up in landfills. Laws were passed to make the original company liable for any cleanup. That’s how certified recycling companies came into existence, to be sure computers sold to a company would not have that computer show up in a landfill with a serial number traceable to that company. One way to avoid this would be to allow certified recyclers to “refurbish” recycled computers to allow them to be resold if they have remaining useful life, such as still supported by OEM security releases, and stop holding the original purchaser liable. But, the current regulations aren’t working.

My friend lost his dad, and his dad used to pay their power bills, which were delayed by then. They wanted to access his computer , so they could get the details saved by him, but they could not and instead of being with his grieving mother, he had to go to the utilities office and wait there the whole day, so their electricity wasn't shut off.
