The metal and rubber assemblies on the sides are actually passive radiators. They improve bass response by being excited by the back wave of the main driver to improve bass response without requiring a bigger enclosure. The principle is similar to bass reflex ports but arguably better suited for tiny speakers.

They are always nothing like the PCs I used to build. Tiny connectors and 1,500 hidden torx screws. After I killed the display on my iMac, I decided to stop trying to do surgery on Apple products. Arduino parts are much cheaper and much easier to connect for such hobbyist thrills.

Those black PCBs are awesome and don’t even cost that much more. Would’ve been nice to see them on the new consoles but I guess Sony and MS don’t want to spend an extra $0.50 per unit purely for aesthetics.

The speaker on the bottom is a subwoofer and the “metal and rubber” on the sides were the tweeters, so it has 3 speakers. If you pick one up while it’s playing you’ll hear voices coming from the sides and then bass coming from the bottom, it’s a really interesting design
@msicklanka2839
@msicklanka2839 3 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of small (1inch , 1.5 inch , 2 inch) full range speaker drivers out there now a days. They have power rated like from 1W to 15W (may be more). Reason they have more power for the size is thanks to neodymium magnets. For producing bass with these speaker drivers, passive radiator (two on the metal body) can be used.
@geraldcapo4400
@geraldcapo4400 2 жыл бұрын
@@matteo94164 unless I’m wrong and I might but the side pieces are radiators.. that help amplify the shockwaves from the base they aren’t electrical at all they are just metal and rubber that vibrate. Tweeters are speakers for catching high pitched sounds

Given it’s low price point, one has to wonder what Apple intends to do to make money from it. That’s some substantial BOM cost right there.
@michaelbuckelew

It could be they plan it to be similar to the iPod shuffle. Get people into the Apple and HomeKit ecosystems. I bought one to use at work instead of the Bluetooth speakers we had used, which were great until the person whose phone served the music walked out of range. One person already asked me if they sold those things everywhere.
@leebeeskee
@leebeeskee 3 жыл бұрын
It’s interesting. Maybe it’s used as a loss leader to get people into Apple’s ecosystem. Also if people have one of these at home that otherwise wouldn’t have, they then may buy more or have a friend round for instance that then sees what it can do etc. etc. I’m firmly ensconced in the Apple system and I love it!
@MarlonDeLaTorreyoutube1
@MarlonDeLaTorreyoutube1 3 жыл бұрын
It´s kinda the same thing they do with the entry-level iPad. It´s a budget device to get people into their ecosystem. Also as a way to keep you inside. If you´re an iPhone user and are looking for a speaker, you´ll see this HomePod Mini price and maybe you´ll get it. You´ll love it, and due to its low cost, you´ll likely get more for other rooms. When it´s time to upgrade your phone, you´ll realize you need an iPhone to use your HomePods and will have to upgrade to another iPhone. Apple is smart, that's why it´s the most valuable company in the world.

Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....
