It's a very 2020s approach to software - introduce pointless new features while neglecting the old ones people actually do use, that need iteration and refinement over time to a) improve and b) stay functional. Otherwise you have a situation like with Google search where it was more effective a decade ago and is kinda ruined now.

Actually, especially Mac computers have been on the rise lately, but not because of Apple Intelligence. The M4 Mac Mini is an incredible value, and so is every base model MacBook Air, now that the baseline has been upgraded to 16 gigs of RAM. They're in the forefront of ARM64 architecture and they're killing it - even though they kind of make their line of products confusing as hell. All those work and will continue to work WITHOUT Apple Intelligence. Nobody needs Genmogis and AI-generated pictures in their lives besides some quick laughs at how bad it is. Nobody asked for text that writes itself, even though the "proofread" function is pretty nice. Or summaries that make no sense, and it's easier to dive into the messages/mails to see for yourself. There are plenty of writing tools, ironically some of them are Mac ONLY, that can help writers. Nobody cares about any of this, and it can be all turned off with the flick of a button in the settings and never have to deal with them. To me, the actual magic of Apple Intelligence is that it can be turned off. By doing so, you lose very few of the things that make those products so amazing. An Apple Silicon Mac is still the same speedy miracle that lives for a gazillion hours on end toiling away. It's not that the Apple Intelligence gets shoehorned in every crevice of the OS like Microsoft does with Windows and that's fine. Hopefully it will be as you said. They salvage the experience and maybe the AI implosion everyone is expecting won't be as severe and we all get something good out of it. If not, we turn it of and move on to the next thing...

It’s also so half asses to begin with taking that and adding a bunch of useless AI features on top makes this the worst (in my opinion) times apple has ever been in as a company it feels as if they don’t know where to go and are just milking the last drops of their past successes

With 27 years of Apple experience I can only wholeheartedly agree with you the worst I've seen Apple ever in. Most hardware products are failure if you do not count the move to Apple silicon which was also not pain-free and the new Mac Mini.

I disagree, but not by much. The worst period was when the company was dying in the mid-90s but yes - it is the most listless the company has been for decades. The gas has finally run out on the Steve Jobs era and what's left? Tim Cook squeezing everything from supply chain to ensure people can't upgrade phone screens and hard drives without paying Apple a king's ransom. I mean, that's what he was hired for. Vision Pro is an amazing technology demo with no reason to be. What does it replace? Nobody knows. iPad is dying, too - it's just there, doing everything badly with a mountain of under-used horsepower. I think the boom under his reign is really the "dead cat bounce" and I don't see good things emerging while he remains in charge.

I think the basic problems with most of the features - and this is a thing in common with lots of AI - is that the convenience you gain from the AI aspect is weighed against the fact there's a good chance it might be wrong and has to be checked manually. So OK, you're going to summarise a message someone sent me... but I think I'd rather read it in case it's important and you got it wrong? Even stuff like asking it the weather... well, I think I'm going to just look at the Weather app because it's just easier to work out what's going on than a casual paraphrased spoken summary of the AI looking at the weather app for me. It's worth one extra click (sometimes no extra clicks) and using my eyes instead of my ears to avoid getting caught in the rain. For my professional workflow the only feature that has the potential to be really useful is audio transcription, which is out already - but it's still not as good as the leading third party app (Otter) mostly because I need it to be accurate so need a solid interface to make manual typed corrections to the transcript while listening to the original audio, which Otter wins in hands down. It would have been better to let me give Otter permission to use my phone calls as the audio source... but for now it doesn't really help. More generally it just feels like everyone in Silicon Valley spontaneously decided that AI was the future and nobody wanted to be left behind. Without asking anyone whether they wanted any of this stuff or if it would be remotely useful. I'm sure there'll be some fields eventually where it finds a niche but it could be a while. I remember when 3G first came out in the UK in 2003-4 and video calling was heavily promoted as the selling point - nobody wanted to do it. But the 3G connection turned out to be far more useful for browsing the web once handset design picked up and people did eventually start doing a bit of video calling in specific situations, but not really until a decade and a half later.

I agree with you 100 percent. You are the only KZbinr and tech reporter I've found who is totally upfront about Apple Intelligence. Therefore, subscribed and upvoted. 👍👍👍 Genmojis and Image Playground look awful. And even if they didn't, I have absolutely no use for them. It's all pure gimmickry. The photo clean-up features are also useless to me. Like you, I'm something of a purist. I want real photos, not doctored versions of photos. If I wanted to create false reality for my friends and family, why don't I just use Photoshop to gin up all kinds of fantasy images of me in Tibet, on the moon, or flying a fighter jet? Whom am I trying to kid? Other KZbinrs have mentioned that the text summary feature is flaky. Sometimes, it works; sometimes, it doesn't. Here's my bottom line: *The only thing worse than having no AI assistant is having one I can't trust.* Unless Apple can give me a reliable AI assistant, I'm not going to waste my time with it.

Anyways, Apple Intelligence will never be available here in the E.U. because it only runs on Apple Silicon and the Commission insists that it must run on all devices (Android or Windows) to be allowed in Europe. Strangely enough, The E.U. does not seem to worry that Mercedes-Benz engines can only be mounted on Mercedes-Benz cars. But what i think IS extremely impressive, and no small feat of engineering, is getting any kind of halfway reasonable result (ie, not literal nonsense pixels), in a _reasonable_ amount of time running *on device* . Processor speed limitations, battery power limitations, thermal limitations should be huge considerations for the (relative) success of these features to generate anything at all. My friends and I joke that when we ask chatgpt to make a picture for us, we can see the lights dimming as the GPUs spin up to churn out that picture lol. But again, as far as usefulness to the consumer? we are a long way off from the image tools being even remotely usable. those teeth 😬

I currently use an iPhone 14PM 512 and a Galaxy S24 Ultra 512 everyday. iPhone for personal use and Samsung for work though I own both. I find myself wanting to use features of the galaxy more and more even though I’ve been a die hard Apple supporter since the iPhone 4 (Still have it,still works). I honestly might be switching my primary soon.. I’ll keep the 14 Pro Max for a secondary but I won’t upgrade it until I have a reason to. Neither the 15 nor the 16 gave me a reason. The colors aren’t impressive and no real improvements have been made at all for years and years. Titanium was the big selling point last year but I’ve had 0 issues out of a non titanium frame. Underwhelmed is an understatement.

They just dropped the ball on AI in a monumental way. They didn’t see it coming and are scrambling to catch up with a strategy that is terrible. The bottom line is they don’t have anything to offer their customers on this and so they are in pure BS mode.

they are under anti trust investigation everywhere. if they did their own LLM (which i kinda doubt they could do well) , its not gonna be allowed in EU and China. The plugin system was actually smart but the chatgpt integration leaves a lot to be desired
@Yewbzee
@Yewbzee 6 сағат бұрын
@ no way, don’t paper over the cracks for them. I hear what you’re saying on the anti trust issue, it’s definitely there as you can see with OpenAI’s releases being excluded in the EU however this wasn’t tailored due to anti-trust. They effed up in a massive way. Their entire iPhone 16 release was on Apple intelligence. Where is it? They haven’t released the major features and aren’t going to do so until the end of Q1 next year. You think that is their preferred strategy? The bottom line is Apple have followed the strategy of not being first but being first to perfect a technology and it’s worked amazingly, taking them to the top slot globally. You can’t do that with AI, it moves way too fast. By the time you’ve perfected todays or yesterday’s tech it’s way out of date. They didn’t realise that and it is blatantly obvious.

I’m having a BALL with it! 😃 Once we begin ‘adulting’, we sometimes lose our childhood capacity to ‘play’ - along with our sense of humor. As an accomplished caricaturist, I can assure you that although some exaggerated faces completely miss the mark, OTHERS make us look far BETTER than we “think” we do! We have NO IDEA how we actually occur’ to others. It’s like a blind spot. Besides, it would obviously be a security risk if they made them look precisely like us 🤷🏽‍♂️ And I’m all for using text tools to improve my writing. Besides, Apple shows us work in progress “features” to make THEIR loot, while you show us commercials to make YOURS. Personally, I’d MUCH rather experience the former 🤷🏾

I care for one, and only one thing: Does an Apple device allow me to deactivate Apple AI, like in Mac OS 15.2, and to opt out of using chatgpt! The moment that is no longer the case, the next phone is an Android phone, and the Mac becomes a Linux system! I actually run my old Macbook Air 2012 with Linux Mint! That doesn't mean I totally oppose AI. I don't like "well meaning" people and tech get in the way! The only reason why I still intend to by a Mini M4, is that Windows 11 is so obnoxiously patronising, that any other system can only be better! Plus, Linux runs pretty good on the old Mac. Though I don't know whether there is a dystro which can run on the M4 chip. Does someone know? I mean, not virtualised but as instrall on the "physical harddisk"?

I've actually been impressed with some of the Note features on the iPad, such as the ability to clean up handwritten text. Really useful to me, as I'm pretty sloppy. I do like the suggestions in Messages for responses, and they keep getting better. Summaries on notifications are a mixed bag for me, but still fun and kind of useful. It also seems that photo search is improved with AI, as I'm able to describe a photo that I want to see and it pulls up like 90% of the time. I only wish some of the promised features of the built-in Mail app were available now, and not what seems like the distant future. I'm particularly interested in avatars for email senders, and until they show up, I'll be using Spark.

First of all Apple needs new leadership. Siri should have been the focus of iOS 18. Make it useful. It's never been that good compared to google. The next thing to do is make the other OS's as bug free as possible. Let's slow down and just fix things that are broken. Now once that's done then add a few features that the users won't. The new OS for MacBooks has issues. It has become bloated and buggy. It's just trying to do too much. Another area of concern is pricing of hardware upgrades. Prices should be inline with other manufactures. SSD for 4 TBs is only $300 Apple needs to charge the same. Their products , while being good aren't that much better. Ram should also drop icy'e prices. At the very least allow users to upgrade their SSD's. Doing things few things would really help people who want to buy Apple products.

Guess what: lots of folks have no interest in these "AI" "features" in the first place. I wish Apple'd spend a little money on letting people customize their Apple products, or, you know, have the correct album covers on the songs on an iphone??
