(Late reply I know) if you want to see how this iPad holds up on its own in a vacuum then the 2017 review is probably for you, because as he mentions in this video the only difference is the faster processor and the Apple Pencil support And since Pencil support was added, the iPad Pro was the best comparison at the time

Was an android user, very happy to be migrated in apple os because of the affordability of this ipad. Android is really nothing compared to iOS for tablets. iOS is fast, never laggy and more usable apps in the store. But the most important factor was android device manufacturers drop software support very soon after the product is launched where as apple will support with updates for many years.

To say android tablets are dead may seem legit but I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 LTE. The fact it support mouse input and that iPad doesn’t and also has usb-c support with OTG support I can at time use it as a laptop replacement.

Yeah I thought a lot about that S3 and agree it has some neat things it can do. But I just don't think that either Google or Samsung are going to do a good job supporting Android Tablets in the near term, so I can't recommend them. It's chrome OS tablets for awhile, I think. -- Dieter

I bought the iPad Air in 2013, my first Apple product. Then in the first week of April Apple sent me an email that I could get $130 for a trade in on a new iPad. I jumped at that. I stayed with the 9.7”, which has a better camera, better video recording, and faster chip processor. I’m loving this one also.

Agreed on the tablet comparisons. For example, I have an Amazon Fire 7 that I've struggled to find any use for, other than reading Kindle books. As for the 2018 iPad, for me - coming to it from an iPad 2 - it will be a HUGE improvement.

Very nice review and informative. I always say to go, "big" so I am contemplating the 12.9 iPad. My last iPad was a Mini 2 and I loved it but sold because I was using my MB Air 11.7 more than anything but after selling that, an iPad would be a nice addition back to my life. Like android better than apple because I usually get much more for the money with of android. Last year I bought Ipad 5th generation and switched to Samsung Tab A. Had never thought I'd miss the Ipad so much. In terms of tablet, Apple is actually the best. IOS is much better made for ipad and even if it's an apple device you get great value if you buy 5th or 6th generation ipad. I will always prefer Android in front of Apple, but I'm going to buy the new Ipad.

Håvard Heggdal you are contradicting yourself. On paper both the android phones and tablets has better specs. However apple products are more optimised so they can achive the same or even more with less specs. I used to have android phones and I used to chaned them annually because they got slower over time, but 3 years (2.5) ago I bought an Iphone 7 and I still use it.

What happened to the 8in iPad Mini? I was hoping for a new one. Also, I want to use Instagram on my tablet. It's my favourite thing to do. Why cant Apple work that out? The website experience of Instagram is so bad. I'll probably have to buy that new Chrome tablet so I can enjoy Instagram. But I'd rather a smaller tablet thats less cumbersome. Samsung and Google have given up on the 8in tablet too. What's a guy to do? Maybe an 8in Lenovo, Asus or Huawei tablet, they look nice. Yeah... nah, they wont get regular updates and will need replacing in a year or less. Pfft, I might as well keep using this 8in Samsung tablet that has a great oled display but hasn't had an update since April 2017. At leat I can enjoy Instagram on it :-/

Just got one, 249 on Amazon. I'm a Windows/Android guy and this is my very first Apple product. No Android tablets out there other than the expensive Samsung Galaxy Tab S-class, and I got frustrated with the sluggishness of the Kindle Fire HD 10 I bought a while back; I'll probably never pick that thing up again now. Very happy with it, not other options in this price range come close honestly.

If you’re an artist or creative using the iPad Pro for illustration say, using apps like Adobe sketch/illustrate/photoshop express or procreate with the Apple Pencil that lamented screen is SO important. It helps so much with accuracy between where you place the pencil on the screen. The new iPad 6th gen whilst it is great that it has compatibility with the pencil, isn’t really a good option if, like myself, you’re using your iPad to draw and create.

I got the 2018 iPad with an Apple Pencil and a Slim Folio keyboard case and I’m actually using it as my main computer for school and it works great! I’m glad I saved money and didn’t go for the Pro.

Jack McCourt You’re talking about Android in tablets in general. Most of those users are from poorer countries where flagships aren’t affordable to most people and tablets are dirt cheap. When you compare the iPad to any brand, the only obvious choice is a Galaxy Tab S3 and that’s because Samsung still puts an effort into making the tablet as good as possible. Other than that, Android is still gonna be a nightmare for tablets unless Google optimizes it and gets better 3rd party support.

Adding features is a great thing. And yeah I’m gonna agree that 2018 iPad is a little upgrade over 2017. Apple Pencil support seems a worthy addition but for the students who are on tight budgets it won’t be much of a help anyway. But if you’re getting into iPads then this is way to go.

It's true, though. The iPad is probably the most consistent Apple product. If you buy a new one, you don't need to worry about headphone jacks being removed, TouchID being removed or glass back that makes it more fragile. You get a good tablet that does every tablet thing well. It may not always be a laptop replacement or have the best processor, but if you bought the iPad Air 2 today, you would probably upgrade it only after 5 years, whereas if you bought an iPhone 6 today, you would end up having to replace it next year.

I dare to say that the entire tablet market is dead. I don't remember the last time I used tablet for something that only tablets could do. Given the popularity of phones(iPhone 8+) and phones just growing in size, I don't think anyone even has a need for such a device. To be honest, it makes sense why Google and Amazon is simply 'neglecting' the tablet market because it is dying. There is no 'tablet space' anymore. And Apple is also seeing that. They've lost market share in classrooms to Chromebooks (a laptop, even as cheap as a chromebook is better than a tablet, iPads also cost more than chromebooks). Apple is now the only (worthwhile)player in this market and they're doing the bare minimum, which is updating the specs every two years just so they can say, "Hey! We have a tablet!"

When the iPad Pro 10'' came out, iPad sale was up 14% that year, which is massive. At least Apple is doing just fine. And you know Apple loves money, if iPads are not selling, they would have stopped selling them.

Edit: And most Windows Tablets do come with a keyboard attached. If you want the same for the iPad you'd have to pay a whopping 169€ in an Apple store. But hey it has to be good, it's an iPad, right?

yh i got me a windows 2in1 for 200 quid and its done me well. the app store is ok-ish, but with upcoming PWA support from Google and Microsoft apps should be a thing of the past soon

TB no they are not that's true. Surface probably would compete with something like iPad pro then again surface running full OS while iPad pro is not although it has really good apps....I just don't understand one thing, why Apple just don't redesign their MacOS into touch compatible OS (or male some kind of mode which turns MacOS into touch compatible). They advertising it like it can replace full computer (what's a computer?) yet they still pushing this Mobile OS on their iPads. I am not saying that all iPads need full OS since not everyone is going to do editing on their iPad but iPad Pro such powerhouse should definitely could be more then capable running full OS just like Surface.

Yes, I agree. Surface is really a good device and more practical as a standalone device than the iPad Pro for most users. But at $300-ish, I would say this iPad has really no competition as pointed out here.

This guy is completely missing the point. The Apple Pencil is not just a ‘thing’. It’s not a minor upgrade and mentioning Netflix, games etc isn’t really the point of this iPad. Sure. It’s an iPad. It can do those things. The focus is education. It’s art. Illustration. It’s the damn pencil that you barely focused on. Not even a drawing demonstration or a professional artists take on how to use it? Pfft. Disappointing.

Exactly. That’s why I bought the biggest IPad Pro. I use it for art making, you can even use it for animation. I don’t regret buying it, I love using it for drawing, painting, making illustrations. This device plus Apple Pencil plus for example Procreate is just impossible to tell through the video. When I tried it myself I knew this will be my first digital graphic tablet that I can draw on screen. Besides It’s so comfortable to use. And I almost made a mistake to buy surface (with Pencil lag) or wacom mobile or Companion 2. IPad Pro is the most portable studio for art that you can have and It’s very profesional.

BlackNomad1 I heard It’s very good on IPad Pro and I plan to buy it in the future. ( I tried Astropad once, tested it on iphone to imac, it works great with photoshop so I think it would be even better through the IPad ) Also there is cheaper alternative called ”duet” but I heard Astropad is better with graphic software and Adobe software.

I love Android tablets, but seriously hardware wise they're dead. Other than maybe the Galaxy Tab S3 and Asus Zenpad 3s 10, there's no good Android tablets, I'm sitting here with my Zenpad worried I'm going to have to get an iPad because google doesn't seem like they're supporting tablets and manufacturers aren't making any.

Windows tablets are much more expensive, Android tablets have terrible software support (OS) and Amazon tablets are a pretty weak offering unless you're deep into the amazon ecosystem. Competition at that price point is virtually non existent.

You're right in that it doesn't have competition in the tablet market, but in terms of competition for thin, light and cheap productivity devices it has a lot of competition. Every other manufacturer has just realised that what is essentially a giant smartphone isn't the best device for education or productivity
