I don´t want to tell you which computer you should get, I just want to tell you how it works for me and why I decided to use this configuration. I have the M1 8gb as thats all I could afford at the time & Music wasn't my main focus.. I only use the Mini for Music tho to be clear. I have only got one project to hit 12gb of ram.. MANY phase plants vitals & serums 0 issues. I got the speeddrum VST as this enabled me to reduce the kits I have to its core samples. & reuse RAM usage I also prefer this to other options. I use the Logic Pro X samplers for loop chopping & larger sample dumps. I am yet under normal use find this little things limit. I can Edit video almost as fast as I can on my 4k custom built PC. I have some VST's that are only rosetta & I could not tell you the difference. I completed 3 psy dub tracks & not even using 30% of the CPU but using about 7GB of ram. so if you are looking for a dedicated music rig then get more RAM like he says 8gb of samples is 8GB of samples. But I have to say the 8GB of ram is not bad at all if you don't mind taking care of what you are doing. I have found that when I am using more than 8GB of RAM the disk use is not even as bad as having safari or Firefox open with many tabs of videos cued.. So my conclusion is that the browsers hit the SSD harder than a huge track with loads of stuff going on. I have never seen it draw more than 30w that was only because I was hitting a bench mark.. rendering videos you name it and its using nothing... My Pc uses more on standby than the MacMini at full stress.. for me its a total win!!!! I am bias as I love the Mac & I regret having to use the PC when I do windows is horrid compared to Mac OS.. but that is my opinion.. Fully recommend a Mac mini! if you need to save the cash 8gb is fine but 16 will serve you better!

A lot of people on the tube are saying M1 isnt great for serious pro work but its very clear the M1 is capable of that and more. I mean, maybe not if youre editing multiple 4k streams of vid, but audio? Its CLEARLY handling even very demanding needs. Put it this way, Im running a late 2012 Macbook Pro Retina, 70+ tracks in Pro Tools, at 96k, and only bottleneck if i run my mastering chain(Ozone) on the mixbuss simultaneously. My new M1 iMac arrives tomorrow. If my old machine handles 90% of my needs, Im confident M1 will handle anything I can throw at it.

I can share the excitement about the M1 Mac too. A year ago I bought a 16GB Macbook with the M1 chip to replace the I7 Windows computer and was also extremely amazed at what it can do. I've worked on Windows machines for almost 20 years, although as a designer I naturally preferred the Mac until then. But the price/performance ratio was better for Windows in the meantime. In addition to music productions, mainly in Cubase, I've also been making timelapse recordings with a gigantic wealth of data for the past year. Of all my computers, whether Mac or Windows, the M1 manages this the fastest. It took me a long time to push him to the limit. A few days ago I downloaded the augmented voices and strings from NI. In a project with 30 to 40 tracks, the M1 then also begins to scratch. I reduced the setting to 5 tracks and then it works again. I'm curious where the journey with the new Macs will go.

Thank you for this video Martin and I am very grateful for your effort to make it. Fortunately, I didn’t see the negative comments. Really trying to limit what I let in while still being aware of the world we’re livin’ in. I have an Express 128, Roland A50, M - Audio Keyrig 49, AKAI LPK25 Edirol FA101 etc etc And now my early 2011 MacBook Pro, no battery, (swollen) is starting to show its age. Music production is a wish list item, I am a working Actor and must self tape so video has become the priority. I will continue to watch you and others and hopefully I can move the needle and achieve a functional music production home studio.

I’ve been using my Mac mini M1 for six months in Ableton and things are working smoothly overall. Sometimes I’ve had strange USB and Thunderbolt drop-outs after waking the computer from sleep, but things always work after a reboot. All in I’d definitely make the same choice again, the M1 chip is such a welcome update for me as long time Mac mini user. Since I steer clear of Native Instruments (I’m definitely an Arturia man) I haven’t had any issues with software compatibility. I have noticed strange spikes in CPU usage when using massive sample libraries but I assume that’s due to paging since RAM memory is limited to 16GB. In such situations I just freeze and flatten those channels as soon as possible. Recently I’ve achieved 50+ channel projects with smooth playback, with some of the channels using CPU hungry VSTs such as Softube Model 84/72 synths. The price to performance ratio of the M1 Mac mini for music production is unmatched as far as I’m concerned, especially if you’re into iOS synths which work perfectly as external instruments in Ableton.

Wake-up can be strange, I have some issues with my monitor but decided not to include that in the review because I am very sure that the problem is the power saving mode of the monitor and not the Mac.

Went with M1 (8GB) without expecting much but it did surprise me, in a good way. Studio One works well even though it's not native to M1. To anyone buying one I'd suggest to check whether your hardware is compatible first. For example Roland has a list on their website which informs you what products work with M1 and have drivers and that was a key factor in my purchase. H9 control app on the other hand had weird behavior: first run crashed but next next runs it was all fine. Some VSTs work, some flat out don't, so unless explicitly stated by vendor it appears to be a gamble. Still I am impressed and I was expecting issues, but in the end the ones I had encountered were few.

@Treewyrm Жыл бұрын
@@Turbojugend27 My personal experience of having only 8GB so far had been alright. Mind you I don't use massive samples libraries either, a lot of time it's just DAW recording hardware synths and layering effects. Pretty much all VSTs which I use have been updated to support M1 natively, as did Studio One. 256GB of built-in SSD on my model however is simply too little, external SSD is a must unless you opt for a higher capacity model from the start.

Great video. I just picked up the base M1 Mac Mini for $440 because I wanted a cheap desktop computer. My needs are much more modest, but it's still an amazing computer for the money.

HI. Great description of the functionality of the mini. I am using a PC with 16 gig ram and 2 tera byte hard drive. I am having latency issues with the system as well as midi issues (which of course go hand in hand). I am 'trying' to use a Yamaha motif ES 7 as a controller but the only driver available that I can find is the Yamaha WDM driver which works for my Yamaha portable grand but not for the ES&. Is the a reliable virtual midi port or controller that will make mid connect with my Windows 1o pc? I have run my midi cables from the ES7 directly to a Focusrite 6i6 with midi I/O but still the ES7 doesn't transmit. The DAW ,Reaper, does not recognize the ES7 as a midi input device so?? Any suggestions or point me to a video that might help? And , lastly, would a mac m1 mini solve all these issues and given my growth potential will more than 16 gig ram in the minim1 be advisable? Thanks . Love your videos.

This is very interesting to hear, thanks for taking the time to post. I bought a Mac Mini for music production about 4 years ago, and it was totally unusable rubbish. It was super slow - took many minutes to boot up - and just to open Logic Pro took so long I could go make a cup of coffee while waiting. I ended up giving it to a kid, and they even thought it was pretty unusable. I believe the Mac Minis have a different processor now.

I can’t speak for MOTU or Native Instruments but big companies like that have a much longer development cycle than the smaller ones and I suppose a lot depends on how much advance notice they got from Apple of the M1’s release. Having written that, of course Da Vinci Resolve manages to work......However, this is a very comprehensive video, Martin. Great work as usual!

I read the pinned comment here, and it's a shame that so many people write harsh/insulting comments, especially on a good review like this. However, if you're reading this and you're looking into getting an M1 Mac Mini, you need to realize that Martin (the uploader) has a pretty demanding set up. I mean, he mentions 30 - 40 tracks in Abelton alone (not including everything else he is running), so that should give you an idea. The point is, if you're doing more "normal" music production, even with a full band or many instruments the base Mac Mini M1 will probably be quite enough for you.

I think Apple is right when they say memory is handled differently. I threw a complex process which loaded a 16GB knowledge graph in memory and my 8GB M1 Mac Mini performed much better than my 32GB Intel MacBook Pro that cost triple. I think it’s always safer to get more RAM but Apple is right saying we should not think in the same terms. If you can afford it great, but if not I highly doubt 8GB impose any kind of limitation for normal music production.

The way they handle it differently is they stress your ssd more.

Thumbs up, ich schau mir deinen Kanal mal näher an...
@MartinStuertzer3 жыл бұрын
