This is one of the most educational videos on Logic I've seen. Not only have you demonstrated how well it runs on M1, but you've also taught us a bit about how Logic Pro actually handles CPU loads and why! This is very very crucial! Thank you very much!

I always noticed that stereo plugins or using in the form of studio is a memory hog. I can add the same plugin on a mono track barely uses anything then applied to the master buss and bam cpu goes up. Thanks for this video. Now I understand what's going on and how to squeeze more plugins natively. This is a fantastic video. I needed a new music computer and my mid 2011 iMac i7 maxed out with High Sierra. I was a Logic 7.8 and 9 user and wanted to get back to Logic and the 10.6 update. So I looked at a 2020 iMac. 27 inch mid tier and with the specs I wanted it would be well over 3K. Too much for me currently. I started seeing M1 videos but they were all tons of sine wave tracks with plugins. I was looking for a real world music session video and found your video which was what I was looking for and it convinced me to buy a M1 Mini 16/1TB at half the cost of the 2020 intel iMac. I couldn't be more pleased with the M1 and Logic running in Rosetta 2 every thing is smooth as silk. Great video. Can’t wait to get into the studio to try these logic settings as I’ve had a nightmare today. Basically working in Dolby atmos mode changes everything. I have a very powerful 2017 iMac Pro fully maxed out in every way possible such as 128gb of ram for example. Logic runs beautifully on it when not in Dolby atmos mode but in Dolby atmos mode the first core quickly goes above 100% and overloads logic even though the other cores (think I have 32 or something crazy like that) are hardly breaking a sweat. This is even more apparent if I have a limiter or something on the master output but even without those I was getting overloads every few seconds today and I can’t bypass the atmos plug-in on the master or it won’t work. Setting multi threading to playback only helps a great deal ONLY if I have an instrument track selected rather than an audio track but this simply isn’t practical. On another note if I use 3d object tracks they go out of time so I have to stick to using only bed tracks which is also frustrating but a whole different topic. Can you suggest anything please Mark? As I say I will try changing the settings from automatic. Thanks in advance. Danny :-)

Thank you man. That was awesome. I have to add though, a really CPU hungry feature in Logic Pro is the number of undo steps, lowering that from the standard 100 to 5, would have probably let you run another Abbey Road Verb. :)

This was so informative, wow! I've always wondered what these settings really do and while I had an idea, you laid it out so transparently that I was able to even tweak my older machine's settings in such a way that the hungriest of instruments loaded on a multitracks orchestral arrangement now run smoother than before! Amazing! Thanks a bunch and then some! In answering your question(s): Naturally, orchestral libraries are (usually) one of the more resource hungry virtual instruments (I'd like to set those apart from plugins, although technically they're that as well) with the exception of the entry level #SpitfireAudio orchestral libraries, which I find to be incredibly efficient while providing really authentic instruments. Well, I've learnt a ton here and I'm really grateful to you for having come up with this during lockdown! Happy 2022, Sir!

My gosh, if you produced a logic training course I’d buy it in a flash. Fantastic job

This is probably the best insight I've had into how the M1 works for music in Logic - I would like to ask how you'd tweak your settings to optimize MIDI recording (Buffer Size, Threading, Cores etc...) Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!

This is hard for me as I do very little midi recording.

Excellent stuff here, and I don't even use Logic (I mainly use Studio One 5.4 now). I'm going to set my settings to the same end of the spectrum. I use a lot of UAD plug-ins, which are ran on separate processors in the Apollo or Quad card. Nevertheless I am all about keeping processor headroom. Need to do all possible to avoid CPU shutting down the session. I also use a lot of Waves plug-ins. The software manufacturers are just now beginning to catch up to the M1 chip. Its a good time to jump in the water.

I also found it very engaging too as well as informative. Not an easy task.

Thanks Paul. I worry that these vids are getting too long. Thanks for the encouragement. It really helps. Teaching is not new to me but this style of at desk KZbin presentation is.

would love to see a non-Rosetta comparison video, with Logic running natively and only plugins compiled for Apple silicon.

I just cannot do that as most of the stuff anyone wants to run is not there yet. I can tell you that the difference will be less than 20% (educated guess).
