Stewie, thank you for all your videos. You introduced me to Mac gaming a few years ago and it's been a wonderful experience on my 2015 27" iMac. My favourite games have been Hitman 2016, Borderlands 2 and Dying Light as well as the Tomb Raider Trilogy. They all play wonderfully on my iMac (1080p high settings) and my experience gaming has been better than it was even on my high end PCs that I built for 12 years prior to switching to Apple. I always heard people say that gaming on Mac is "impossible" but you made me a believer. I love your channel and your voice is like comfort food for my brain. Your channel and these games helped me get through some particularly stressful and depressing times starting in 2019 and I wanted to say thank you.

Apple's Mx chips can deliver much higher performance if games are native and well optimized. However for high res textures gaming 16 GB looks to be a necessity with of course at least 512 GB SSD ;)

@Andychiu8452 жыл бұрын
@@alpha34098 8gb system memory is already a laughing stock but Mac have 8gb of unified memory which is sys ram + vram
@El.Duder-ino2 жыл бұрын
@@alpha34098 But let's not forget with the PCs you would need most likely even more memory for both main and video memory. Yes, there's a possibility to go with the unified memory model using SoC chip, but you will be always somehow limited with the memory speed. Apple is on the other hand trying to achieve fast access to the unified memory and decrease latency by placing it on the SoC package. This is significantly reducing lost cycles in accessing memory outside chip package. Of course ideal situation would be to have memory as part of the chip with speed of cache, but that's commercially impossible. Best we can hope for in the unified memory is to get as fastest one as possible as closest to the main chip. With that 8 GB can be very competing with fast enough SSD which does virtual memory and swapping. As it was confirmed at least 512 GB or higher SSD with the 8 GB is a must. Of course more RAM and SSD you got better, but it depends on your budget ;)

@TokyoQuaSaR Жыл бұрын
Well not if you watched the video @1:10 and realize a game that was coded for the Arm architecture doesn't run well because of the lack of RAM, which is kinda ridiculous to hear when you are a PC user, but it's not surprising for Apple who makes you pay huge extra money to get those memory extensions that are absolutely vital. Apple has the best processor devs, the best esthetic designers, but their sales policy ruins it all, not to mention their terrible after service... And the other technical parts of their products are usually sub par compared to other makers. They do well only thanks to their marketing image and thanks to their processor devs.

@@mackan072 No, the Steam Deck came after proton.
@mackan072 Жыл бұрын
@@kdhlkjhdlk Absolutely, but the Steam Deck is what made Linux Gaming anywhere near "mainstream", and it's enabling further investment in, development of, and support for Proton. Comment only stands if you purchase a macbook with the intent to game, which is stupid and you shouldn't do that. For some industries macbook is king and industry standard, gaming is not one of them as windows will always hold that crown no matter how powerful macs get simply because of the OS. Windows is meant for gaming, so most games are optimized for windows. I'm fine with low end gaming experience at a high end price, because I get a high end experience with what I primarily use my macbook for.

@@andrewdumais9163 Industry standard is dependent on which industry. Film and design is arguably Apple's territory but that's about it. Server and cloud computing will never be theirs. If you intend to game, and then bought a Mac, you're stupid. If you intend to design, and then bought a Windows machine, it will work but most studios you'll work for will probably be on a Mac. If you want to do both, buy two machines. Future proofing is stupid anyway.

I use a macbook for my schooling/career as it's the go-to and industry standard, and I like my macbook hooked up to a 27" monitor (32" ultrawide in the future when I wanna drop the money on it) using the macbook as a second monitor. Don't own a gaming rig anymore and not gaming enough to justify a second computer for that purpose, which is why I'm interested in running whatever games I can on my top of the line macbook. With that said if you're a heavy gamer and have no real reason to use a mac based laptop, I recommend just sticking with a gaming rig. I was a huge gamer my whole life and now I don't really have much time for it so I just like casual gaming on my macbook, which is powerful enough for most games that can actually run on the OS. If you're not a designer, photo/video editor or music producer I wouldn't recommend a macbook. If you are any of those, I'd really only recommend a specced out macbook.
@illustris.2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewdumais9163 Honestly, same. I still own an entry level gaming PC but I'm just not gaming that much to actually care about the gaming performance. I bought a base model 13in MBP for my final year in college and it's a bittersweet experience. I love the battery life, I love the heft, and I love macOS but the device itself leaves much to be desired. What's worse is that, where I'm from, I can't find a similar feeling laptop unless I shell out top dollar for something like an XPS. The price for that is inflated to ~40% here whereas our local Apple reseller price matches the education pricing to Apple's MSRP. For the price of a 13in MBP, I could get a decent gaming laptop that runs 3 hours on battery, has a shitty, dim, but high refresh display, and is made out of plastic, so in my case I could either buy a disposable laptop or a reliable one for a very steep price.

With a Thunderbolt dock you won't have a port problem. (they are pricey though) I use 1 cable to power my keyboard, mouse, (music) keyboard, audio DAC w/ mic & headphones & power the device. I have the MacBook Air M2: no fan (heatsink & passive cooling, no noise & more battery life than I can use in a day (~18 hours). MacOS is great for creative apps, probably being the main reason to choose it. The screen on mine is quite small, but it feels like you're getting more because the gestures work so well to switch quickly between apps. So I find it viable to work on either its 13.6" screen or my 34.2" ultrawide monitor. Another thing, docking the laptop with the lid closed just works. My open apps shuffle over to the monitor instantly... can't take that for granted compared to how bad it works with Windows, dancing with the mouse to get it to wake up & sometimes requiring the setting "keep the screen on with the lid closed" turning the laptop into a furnace.
