I'm a programmer and using the same asset over and over typically puts far less stress on a system. We can store the object once and provide 500 pointers. Now, I don't know what's going on inside Logic Pro, but in general you should use different assets when testing.
@LonelyRocker2 жыл бұрын
That was the thinking but I didn't find any difference when I used unique assets for the track test so perhaps that's not something DAW creators think about as it's not really a practise that would have any practical use...but maybe some dAWs do...it would make sense...

Same, did you end up making the move? I can’t tell if I should go for the max or the ultra. Without really testing it out for my own needs it’s tough to gauge if there’s a difference or if there will be one in the near future. So if either of you have any insight with that. Would be great to hear it!
@LonelyRocker2 жыл бұрын
@@Truth1nNature The best answer is spend based on need and budget. The Max can handle the load no doubt. I went Ultra because once I beefed up the Max with more RAM and storage the price was inching closer. I spent as much as I felt comfortable to to get a machine I needed today and hopefully to give me as much runway as possible. Spend within your means and max out as much as you can within that. BTW. I've been very happy with mine. Minor issues but overall great performance...
@montraix2 жыл бұрын
@@Truth1nNature didn’t make the move yet, and I’m really questioning the same thing. Spec-ed out, there’s still a $2k price difference for the ultra, and if it’s only buying me mostly video impact it’s not needed. But I’m recording up to 18 tracks simultaneously on drums, and have written symphonies with huge virtual instrument demands, neither of which my trash can Mac Pro can handle anymore. The question is, how much is enough? And if I get a Mac Studio, and it’s super expensive, what happens when the connections change, again? So then, do I wait for a Mac Pro, someday, that is probably cost prohibitive?
@Truth1nNature2 жыл бұрын
@@montraix IMO these Mac studios are at a great price point. Sure, pricey AF. But compared to the options we had say 5 years ago. These are truly a whole new standard from what I can tell. Like going from a flip phone to iPhone type change. Sure, they will come out with M2, M3 but from my perspective we will still be in the new standard for the foreseeable future. I think my biggest dilemma with it is that it doesn’t come with a display so gotta spend on that too. So if I go with the max, would likely be the MacBook Pro. Has a beautiful screen, but it’s smaller than I am used to. Decisions man. Haha 🤦♂️

I saw in another video that using lots of intel plugins in logic creates more CPU load than running logic itself in Intel mode so each plugin isn't wrapped separately. In other words if you need to run lots of plugins not optimised for Apple Silicon, try running logic in intel mode. Obviously you don't need to bother testing this, but I'm mentioning it as it might be helpful for some one :)

Thanks my friend! A Mac Mini can absolutely get the job done. If you don't need all of the horsepower and a bit longer processing time is OK you can make do. M1 is a powerful chip even on the mini. 512 tracks at 32ms latency is more then most people need. Import 4k video in logic / pro tools or cubase add Nexus for soundtrack then how many tracks can you use that’s a more accurate test for how a lot of people are going to use the M1 Mac studio. Whit 32ms or settings whit even lower latency you can record with Waves plug-ins Live whit Focusrite Clarett or other sound card that have extremely fast roundtrip speed. Whit M1 Mac studio you should be able to record 8-16 tracks with some Waves plug-ins inserted EQ Compression Tape emulation whit 3-32ms latency.

My thoughts would be for some of these plugins becoming more popular which use spectral processing, AI and linear phase filters all either non-realtime (the audio equevalent to video rendering) or which use intensive algorithms like FFT. Examples being Soothe, Izotope mixing, mastering and de-noise plugins, Melodyne, various linear phase equalizers. Do the non-realtime plugins run faster? Do the complex algorithms run faster (less latency). Using plugins in live sound is becoming more and more popular and for that latency is a big thing. Waves soundgrid is popular in those applications but if you want to use something other than waves you have to use regular plugin hosts of some sort like Gig Performer. A lot has to be done to compensate for latency. In fact monitor engineers who want to use something like Soothe for in-ears have to be even more concerned about latency than FOH does. So it begs the question if a musician or live sound engineer wants to use plugins do they get a Mac Studio to minimize those issues or just an M1 mini in a rack and call it good because there's no difference? There is a company working on running plugin code on GPUs for a reason. It's not just the number of tracks or plugins it's dealing with but how fast those plugins can work too.

Hey bud! Last video I asked about running Logic in Rosetta 2 in order to use plugins that aren’t native yet. You seemed to believe that it didn’t matter and running Logic natively didn’t affect how the plugins were processed. Since then I’ve asked a lot of people and even talked to a couple experts. They all seem to believe you need to be running the DAW in Rosetta to utilize it for plugins. Yes you can still get some to work but there will be greater inefficiencies and problems. This could possibly be where you’re having issues with bottle necking Etc. Maybe try only using native plugins while running Logic natively. Also, when I first got my M1 MacBook I found some info that basically said the most effective thing you can do to make an M1 more efficient is allow Logic to utilize all the cores (8in my case). That one adjustment almost doubled my project size. When I updated to Monterey Logic started overloading on me and finally I realized that the updated reset me back to 4 cores. Ever since I put it back to 8 I have had zero issues. And I’m running 120 tracks sometimes (real world) on an M1 MacBook Air. 16 gigs of RAM. Anyway. Thanks for all you do! Love your bass playing!
@timbeaton50452 жыл бұрын
Not entirely sure. I THINK, the older route of running Logic in Rosetta mode was required to use non M compatible plugins, but i believe that Logic can now run in M mode itself, and the Rosetta handling of plugins happens in the background. Of course that is still not optimal. So there will always be a trade-off in performance if any plugins are still in x86 mode. And some may be more finicky than others. Still a bit of a suck-it-and-see situation. Says more about companies who are dragging their heels over updating to M compatibility! Naming no names....!
@LonelyRocker2 жыл бұрын
Hey David. Thanks for your insight. My understanding is Rosetta presents itself when needed. It’s not something you can turn on and off. Apps that are native M1 can not run in Rosetta. Logic Pro is native so it runs natively. I agree 100% there is a definite lag with plugins running in Rosetta with an app that is not. There was a lot going on in this video but I failed to mention I kept everything native and I was monitoring The Activity Monitor to ensure I wasn’t using non native plugins. But in the end, this video was mostly for fun. Thanks for the note on the bass and simply for participating in the discussion. Much appreciated!

@@LonelyRocker also, when you say Rosetta isn’t something you can turn on or off you do know that you can choose to run Logic or any other program in Rosetta or natively via the info box. There’s an option to use Rosetta or not. Maybe you’re just refereeing to the plugins. Idk. But why would Apple make Rosetta available to Logic if it didn’t have an effect on the plugins? There would be no need for the option to run Logic in Rosetta if what you are saying is true. Ya feel me? Idk. I’d like to get to the bottom of it though. I’m not one to just assume. I’m sure we all remeber what George Carlin had to say about that. But seriously, what would be the Logic behind having “Logic”run in Rosetta if it dissent affect the plugins? There could be a different reason but I’m not coming up with it right now.. idk. Maybe you can help me get to the bottom of this?
@davidasher222 жыл бұрын
@@timbeaton5045 yeah, I had heard something of that nature too. But when did this change? You’re not talking about the first Rosetta, right? Because why would Apple even give you the option to run Logic in Rosetta 2 if it didn’t affect the plugins? Or maybe you mean it’s a recent change somewhere between the initial M1 release and now. Still, my personal experience leads me to believe that I’m better off running in Rosetta than Natively if I’m using unsupported plugins. Like the Kush stuff and up until recently the Izotope stuff. And I can’t run a Acustica plugin at all. Doesn’t matter what I’m running Logic in. And they claim to have M1 support now too. Maybe not the free stuff though. Idk. I’m surprised Slate isn’t on board yet. (Idk I’ll name names! Lol). I totally would have stuck with their subscription had model but when I got the new M1 their stuff was so slow and finicky. And of course I could only use them with Logic in Rosetta Mode. Oh well.. if you do get some solid information concerning Rosetta and how it works now let me Know. Tests with Real Various “complex/heavy” plugins. I really want to know WHAT the M1 Max and M1 Ultra are capable of in Mac Studio.
@risingphoenix148411 ай бұрын
@@sergeyleps8492 First off, you don’t need 10 plugins per track…. The very fact that you said that tells me you either know nothing about producing, mixing or engineering or you are a beginner and are not very experienced. The quality of your recording and the performance matters way more than the number of plugins. If you are using 10 plugins on a track, it was a shitty recording and or bad performance….. the only reason you would be using 10 plugins on each track is most likely is to justify that you spent money on your plugins and need to use them. Secondly if you need to use plugins on multiple tracks you most likely would be grouping your tracks to apply the same plugins on similar instruments/tracks which would reduce the load on your computer. Thirdly no one said you don’t need a powerful computer my comment was about realistic necessary power….. for example I have a 2011 MBP that I can still use to produce……is it my main computer no but I can still use it. I have a 2020 intel iMac with 190 gigs of memory that is the engine behind my studio and on specs it gets destroyed by the M1/M2/M3 Mac’s however they’re overkill, my intel iMac is a complete powerhouse for music production. From a price point perspective the Mac Studio it is not worth it for music production ….you can spend $1000 on a M1 Mac mini or air and it would be more than sufficient…..you can spend $3000 on actual music gear…..

@Lonely Rocker: You wrote it wasn't supposed to be a white paper, but it was brutally scientific.😂 Science is about testing things, exploring the limits, drawing conclusions and having fun doing it. All points wonderfully fulfilled. 🤗 Regarding the inexplicable performance drops: - starting and synchronizing threads requires more computing power than continuous operation - as you have correctly recognized, it is not only the amount, but the type of plugins and instruments that strongly influence the overall performance - every process and thread has a certain latency which can add up unfavorably (Rosetta adds latency btw). Even if it is inaudible to the human ear, there is a need to correct timing from time to time. So you may be able to track down the problem by observing the activity monitor (influence of a system process, RAM needs to be swapped, etc.), but it may be that you can really only observe and guess what it is. I would have had a challenge too. My Macbook Pro (in tank bag of my Gixxer) goes from 0 -120 mp/h in a good 7 seconds. I don't think the Mac Studio in the red Mustang from the video can come even close.😁

Ahhhh. How refreshing. A comment that notes appreciation for scientific exploration while understanding this is a community collaboration open to interpretation and contributions. You’re right. Pure science! Now a race between the computer and that Mustang clearly was an oversight bordering on negligence. I may need to correct that 🤪🤪🤪🤪 Thanks!

The pathetic PC dude : thanks for the chuckles. We should see his PC without crashes for 2-3 hours.

I mean, a computer can only multithread to a certain point. Some developers will prioritize certain aspects of runtime performance over others. Atomic memory lock vs not, you're using it in a way nobody would ever use it so who cares how it performs. Use it normally and judge from that.

People are curious to see these machines pushed beyond normal operations. I guess it’s entertaining 😎

So, how many people need a computer that can handle 500 tracks in a session? Lol

Exactly! 🤣

The problem is NOT the number of 500 tracks! You can load 10 plugins from Acoustic Audio - and your computer will stop working and give up. These are the tests that interest Real producers! Tests with Real Various “complex/heavy” plugins. I really want to know WHAT the M1 Max and M1 Ultra are capable of in Mac Studio.

no way, this coffee?! expensive, chick, and bad. Nothing buys the filter cofee for me, with fresh bones

This is so beyond realistic. Your high quality specs are not going to make you make better tracks. Every (decent) computer can record at 16 bit (which is what a CD master is...) Only creative people can deliver interesting tracks. Stick to mixing creative people's stems... if you can even do that.
@LonelyRocker2 жыл бұрын
Only thing I'll say is you should create at specs higher than what you deliver at. That's how it works in film, television and audio. Why lock yourself in at the lowest common denominator. In the pro world that is just not done...

@@LonelyRocker I record at 48hz 24 bit. I use workarounds to keep my CPU running smoothly.

Water proof test is the most pointless test ever. Don't get electronics wet. If your did, you failed. Buy a new device.

You seem to be the only one that took that test seriously ;)
