Today's short and sweet class is a response to a comment I received on last week's video. The original question was "Why does Apple Mail mark messages such as newsletters that I signed up for as Junk Mail?" This person had tried going into the Junk settings and time after time, marking it as "NOT JUNK" and yet, the messages continued to go into the Junk folder. This problem is more common than you might think, so if it's been happening to you, I hope this video helps you.

You are assuming we use other email platforms and then send it to Apple mail. What if we only use apple mail and still have emails going to junk that should not?

It didn't work for me, but I had already moved it out of the junk folder when I was in Mail. The weird part is that it is not consistent. I could just tell my mom to send another email and fix it, but it would probably let that one through.

Apple Mail has the worst spam filtering of any mail product I’ve used in the past 25 years. The bigger problem is that it sends junk to the inbox. The same mail that Yahoo and Gmail send reliably to the junk folder, Apple sends to its inbox. That’s when mail from external sources is also routed to Apple Mail.

Yeah even vip emails get sent to the junk folder it’s so annoying to have to always go in and check it too.

Nope. My email provider routes junk to a separate website. It never even makes it to my Mac. I never had a problem with misclassified Junk mail until just after i upgraded to Big Sur. Even though I have added the email addresses to my contacts it still goes to my junk folder. I have no rules on the server to route anything to my junk folder. In fact, I have a bunch of filters on the server to route mail from specific senders to folders under the Inbox. Mac Mail is even sending those to the Junk folder and when I look at them in the Junk folder it automatically has "move to xxx" set above the message where xxx is the folder it was supposed to be in.

Brill, it solved the problem for me, thanks. If you cant see your Gmail spam folder its probably being hidden, go to the cog icon > Settings > Labels and choose to either show/hide your spam folder.

Same issue. Logging into the website doesn't offer the option to not mark it as junk. I've even set the sender as a VIP, doesn't matter - junk!

Thanks for this. I don't know if you can help with this variation - what if the misidentified junk mail is coming from a dot-mac account, i.e., Apple? In recent weeks dozens of emails directed to my mac email address, from correspondents and companies I've been receiving email from for years, is suddenly being identified as junk. Is there a corresponding way - such as what you show for Gmail - to tell Apple "this isn't junk or spam"? Missed the info on "How to tell Apple Mail that a message in the spam folder is not a spam", similar to Outlook, where there is a right-click on the message and a "Not Spam" classifier. Tks

THANK YOU, David! (and WarrenGH) This is a problem I've researched and tried to fix for too long. I had narrowed it down to, in my case, Gmail, but I had no idea how to change the setting, spending and hour here and there navigating through all the settings. I just never went to the source, Spam/Junk itself. Sometimes it's the simplest things that allude us. It may be a short video but it has solved a major issue for me. I'll take that any day. What if the emails are coming to your iCloud account? I get emails from major retailers for example, all are in my Contacts app, but STILL they get junked... very frustrating. Thanks for the great videos!!

Thanks for the info, but, like others listed here, how do I fix it when Apple is the mail provider. I am on my HOA board and Apple marks those emails as SPAM every single time. I can't get it to stop. Also email lists I subscribe to will work one day not not the next.
